Moray (Elginshire) / Burials in Rafford - DUNBAR
« on: Sunday 14 April 24 14:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have uncovered that my 5xG-grandparents, James and Elizabeth DUNBAR are interred at the
Rafford Old Kirkyard, Rafford, Moray. James died in 1817 and Elizabeth in 1811.

I would be most grateful for a photo of their grave marker. I cannot see one in "Find a Grave" (usually a great source here in Australia).

Being in Australia, I have no idea how onerous this request may be; I hope it is simple. :)

Thanks
Miles

Monmouthshire / Rhyd Inn Publican
« on: Saturday 16 April 22 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have uncovered a 3xgreat grandfather, named Edward Thomas who on his son's baptism in Bedwellty Parish, is noted as the publican of the Rhyd Inn, Tredegar. The baptism was on 19th Oct 1825.

Being in Australia, my familiarity with Welsh geography is rudimentary. Tredegar seems reasonable size and yet I cannot find reference to any Rhyd Inn in any of my searching. A topic here in RootsChat informs me that "Rhyd" means "Ford"; but that has not helped to date.

"Tredegar Old Pubs" - https://www.tredegar.co.uk/old_pubs.htm - makes no reference to it.

If there is a better source to read, I would be most grateful. Or even better: can someone tell me about "Rhyd Inn"?

Thanks in Advance,
miles thomas

Cork / **COMPLETED** Is there a Kemp Street in Cork?
« on: Monday 25 February 13 06:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Quoting from the Jewish Communities and Records (UK)'s site 'The Rise of Provincial Jewry'  copyright 2013, "There was a synagogue at Cork also in the first half of the eighteenth century, with its own Shochet and its burial-ground in Kemp Street"

I have attempted to find Kemp Street in modern Cork to no avail.  Where I imagine it to be is noted as Sawmill Street on modern maps.  Are they the same thing?

Regards
Miles

It has been a while since I had the time to continue my HYMES research, but thanks to all replies for your contributions.

Mary, thank you especially, that last post was excellent. I will be using it immediately to further my research.

Simon, we ARE related via the old man, Solomon HYMES. I shall contact you directly.

Cheers all
Miles

Susan, You are a marvel  for doing this.

Solomon was a Jew so I cannot vouch for which church any ceremony may have taken place.  I guess the worst case is that the R.C. marriage was not my Charlotte and Joseph.

Anyway, I am toiling away here for more specific details.

Thanks again for your initiative.
