Hi Carole

I have now rechecked and the entry is for another James Philpott, but the baptism is there and I know to my own cost that some of my own relatives do not appear in the registers. My maternal grandfather was born in 1871 but even after 20 years I have never found an entry or a baptism but most hid older and younger siblings are registered.

Hi Annette

That is an amazing analysis and seems to cover a lot of ground and makes sense. The only query i have is that in the 1851 Census, there is another James Philpott born 1821 and there is a baptism in 1821 in Cheriton of a James son of John & Mary that fits perfectly, but I cannot at present find a link with John philpott and Francis Philpott which would complete the circle.

Hi Crisanne

Many thanks for that information, it does indicate the probability that young James was illegitimate, but there is another possibily in that James Junior became a sailor and there areapparently stories of a maritime tradition, so I wonder if young James's father was a sailor?

Hi Pauline T

Hi Pauline

There is a baptism of a James Philpott, son of Elizabeth Philpott on 4th June 1843 in Folkestone taken from the Parish registers on Ancestry. That same James appears in the Cehriton/Elham area,

Hi Crisane

No the Census records both show place of birth as Sandagte and the family seemed to have lived around the Chsriton area.

David
