Antrim / James HOGG, Ship Captain Belfast 1800's
« on: Friday 25 April 14 02:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am researching my ancestor John HOGG b about 1818 co Antrim. He married Sarah CHAMBERS born about 1825 in Ireland on 30 March 1846 in Belfast. Sadly, there is only an index type of record for their marriage so I haven't been able to get either parents, occupations etc- except John HOGG and his wife moved to Gloucestershire, England after the marriage and had some children there. They moved to Cricklade, Purton, Wiltshire UK for a couple of years around 1851 and returned to Clifton, Gloucestershire where they had more children ( many babies died). Sadly, Sarah HOGG nee Chambers died early 1858 of Diabetes aged only 33 and her husband re-married Elizabeth Cannock MEREDITH later the same year ( she may have been a house keeper as John had a number of young children to look after).....on that marriage record, John HOGG states his father was James HOGG, a Ship Captain. The HOGG family were living Ashley Down Cottages in Clifton Gloucestershire in the 1850's.
I am really hoping someone can help me find the Belfast marriage record as I need Sarah CHAMBERS father's details and any other clues.
I have searched through the Merchant Navy mariners records and nothing came up for Capt James HOGG ( there are a few from Scotland ) that I could be sure about. There is a James HOGG b 1816 Belfast who sailed on the "William" in October 1837 - I am wondering if he is another son
I have most of the details for John & Sarah & Elizabeth's children ( John HOGG was a book seller who died 1868 in Gloucestershire ), but nothing back from them. . Would appreciate any help or contact with any descendents

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / GOODWIN, Richard 1700's
« on: Monday 31 January 11 04:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am researching my GOODWIN connections in Duns Tew and Little Tew Oxfordshire.

I found a court case involving a Richard GOODWIN and his son-in-law Richard GUFFKINS...that is what it states in the old record- I think it was probably GASKINS.

Anyway, Richard GASKINS married Mary GOODWIN and by 1747 had 9 children- nothing on IGI about any of them..it seems the 2 families farmed in Little Tew for 12 years and then took a farm in Duns Tew for a number of years before the GASKINS were ' removed'

I have a Richard HARPER b 1759 who married Jane/Jenny WELLS in 1784 Duns Tew- their son William HARPER b 1786 married  1809 to Maria STOCKFORD b 1785

Maria STOCKFORD b 1785, Duns Tew was the daughter of Thomas STOCKFORD and Mary GOODWIN who married 1764 in Duns Tew...I have all their children off IGI

Some unconfirmed  information I have for the early GOODWINS is the following:

Mary GOODWIN baptized 4 July 1742 Duns Tew. She was the daughter of Richard GOODWIN & Joanna(Hannah) LOCTON who married 19 April 1742 in Fuller, Steventon, Oxfordshire. Mary died  and was buried 18 Nov 1809 in Duns Tew

I am not sure if this GOODWIN family above is the same one that moved to Duns Tew from Little Tew or not.

If anyone has any information on the Richard GOODWIN ( probably born late 1600's)and Richard GASKINS ( who had 9 children) I would appreciate comparing notes or any look ups in the Duns Tew area

Kind regards

South Africa / Jonathon GREETHAM & Ann Jane HALL 1800's Cape Town
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 04:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello List,

I am having a real problem trying to locate Jonathon GREETHAM b 1831 Scarborough, Yorkshire, UK and his wife Agnes ( b abt  1827, Edinburgh Scotland) and daughter, Sarah Matilda GREETHAM b 1862 Stoney Creek Queensland ) who arrived in New Zealand on the " Warwick" February 1873 along with Sarah HALL aged 43, Elizabeth HALL aged 16 and Ann Jane HALL aged 17.

Ann Jane HALL married in NZ 1875 to John QUARRIE and named a son, John GREETHAM QUARRIE. Ann Jane stated on the birth cert for her daughter Daisy, that she came from Cape Town.

My real interest is in Ann Jane HALL b abt 1855/56 but because I found the passenger record showing the GREETHAM's arrived on the same ship and Ann named a son Greetham, I have assumed they knew each other somehow.

I cannot find Jonathon GREETHAM in the UK 1841 census so have assumed he left England sometime before that - I did find him in 1871 back in Scarborough Yorkshire with wife and daughter. His parents were John GREETHAM and Sarah ( maybe BURGESS) or possibly Mary nee ??

I am hoping someone may be able to help locate a record for either of these families as I am trying to help my cousin in NZ find out more about his Great Grandmother, Ann Jane QUARRIE nee HALL

many thanks

Jocelyn

Essex Lookup Requests / HALIDAY James Joseph 1851 look up?
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 01:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again,

I am not sure if Essex is the correct place to be posting this however James Joseph HALIDAY born abt 1834 married his first cousin, Susanna AUSTON in 1858 at Colchester. They went to New Zealand and had a number of children - Susanna died about 1871 and James died 1915. He had re-married to a Mary Ann VAUGHAN b abt 1834 also. On their gravestones, it says Mary Ann was from Colchester and James left a beautiful message referring to his first wife:

Transcription"In loving memory of James Joseph Haliday, who entered into rest 20th February 1915 aged 82 yrs. Thy will be done. Also Mary Ann, the beloved wife of the above, who entered into rest 17th April 1915 aged 81 yrs. Nearer my God to thee; and Susanna, the beloved and faithful wife of my youth, interred at St Marks, Remuera."

It is possible James is at school in 1841, but I am hoping he showsup in 1851 somewhere - I have no idea where he was born but the boy I found in 1841 says he was born Essex.

I have quite a lot of info on the AUSTON families - they had large farms around Colchester.

If ayone could help find him 1851, I would be most grateful

Many thanks

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / WOOD(S) Joseph b 1811, 1841 & 1851
« on: Saturday 10 January 09 07:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello again,

I have been trying to find Joseph WOODS b 1811 North Aston, his wife Mary( nee HARPUR) b 1812 Duns Tew, and hopefully some children - Joseph is a ' hawker' or 'Pedlar' in 1861, 1871 and a 'dealer' in 1881.

By 1861, they have Emma, aged 18, Fanny - also 18 ( although I think she was b 1849 ) William 14, and Margaret 6. I would like to fnd their daughter Anne b abt 1840 in North Aston - where all the  other kids were born.

The 2 Joseph's which I can find in 1841 do not seem to be my man.

The name alternates between WOOD, WOODS & WOODES in the censuses

Any help would be fantastic!

Cheers

New Zealand Completed Requests / WYATT William died Hamilton West 1904
« on: Friday 09 January 09 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
hello List,

This is the first time I have posted on the NZ board so I am not sure if anyone can help...

I have just put together a grab bag of info relating to my William WYATT who came out from England ( Oxfordshire b Claydon) on the Alumbaugh ,18 August 1875, with his wife Anne and 3 daughters - Ruth Matilda WYATT b 1868, Mercy Albina WYATT b 1870 and Edith WYATT b 1873.

As a result of searching Paperspast tonight, I have discovered the family settled in Hamilton West. The 3 girls are mentioned as doing well at school and Ruth singing solos at the Wesleyan Church. I also learned that William was a shearer.

I have also discovered that Mercy Albina WYATT married Charles William PROUD around 1890 - they had at least one son , John William Wyatt PROUD b 1892 died 1959 in Auckland . I would love to know when the marriage took place and the names of any other children.
Mercy died aged 84 in 1954 and Charles died aged 87 in 1957 - both are buried at Waikumete cemetery, Auckland.

The PROUD family were iron mongers and had come out to NZ in 1865 on the Resolute. George Bell PROUD was the father and died 1920. He had another son, George Welford PROUD, mariner who drowned when the Drummond Castle was wrecked off France in 1897. I know that George W PROUD had 2 children - George William PROUD b 1888 died 1959, a storeman in Otahuhu, and Beatrice Amelia PROUD b abt 1890- no other details although I suspect she married a Mr Heald as I found a probate record ( index only) for a John George Bell Proud HEALD in 1969 .He died 1969 aged 63 and was a railway worker

I do not know what happened to Edith WYATT but would very much like to!

Ruth Matilda WYATT was my great great grandmother who married James NOY and lived in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands until her death late 1904 - just a few weeks after her Dad died. Her parents, William and Anne WYATT are buried in Hamilton cemetery - 1903 & 1904 both aged 63.

Ruth had 5 children for which I have information. Her husband, James NOY ( b Cornwall UK) lived to 97 years of age dying in 1952 and is buried with Ruth in Kawakawa.

I would love to make contact with any of the WYATT /PROUD/HEALD descendents and would greatly appreciate any help in finding records for the abovementioned folk.

Kind regards

Antrim / JACKSON, GILHRIST ROUTLEDGE families
« on: Wednesday 29 October 08 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello List,

I have just uncovered a connection to the JACKSON, GILCHRIST and ROUTLEDGE families.

Robert Andrew GILCHRIST b abt 1858, probably in Donegal Ireland, to Samuel GILCHRIST and Sarah BOVAIRD.

Robert, Flour merchant, married Annie Mary JACKSON b 1863 Milford Haven Pembroke WALES to Arthur JACKSON, master mariner, and Mary Jane DAVIES. Arthur JACKSON died between 1885 and 1891

The couple married in Belfast in 1885 and had at least 3 sons - all born Cathcart Lanarkshire, Scotland.

1) Robert D GILCHRIST b 1888

2) Harry Bovaird GILCHRIST b 1891

3) Norman J GILCHRIST b ??

The father , Robert Andrew GILCHRIST died in his sleep  22 Nov 1918. The address at the time was 155 Somerville Drive, Glasgow and the informant was his son Norman.

Harry Bovaird GILCHRIST b 1891 was a Civil Engineer and  went back and forth to Buenos Aires Argentina from 1927-1939. On a passenger record I have, he gave his last address in Glasgow as: Crown Villa, 155 Somerville Drive, Mount Florida, Glasgow and  22 Marston Rd. He stated his permanent Residence was Argentina.

I have been unable to find the family in 1901 so have presumed they were in Ireland - mainly because Annie's sister, Edith Kathleen JACKSON b 2 January 1872 in Belfast, married there in 1903 to Herbert James ROUTLEDGE- also an Engineer. Herbert was born 1876 in South Sheilds England to James ROUTLEDGE and Amelia FLANN.

Other JACKSON children are:

Frederick Arthur JACKSON b 1868 - Belfast Antrim
John Cathcart JACKSON    b 1870  Belfast
Alfred Arthur JACKSON       b 1878  Belfast
Caroline Margery JACKSON b 1873 Belfast Antrim - found in Pembrokeshire in 1901

The sister, Edith Kate JACKSON, had been living at 6 Bedeque Street, Belfast, Shankill area in 1903

If anyone can help locate descendents or any clues ( I found some of the family in 1891 at Cathcart) regarding this family, I would really appreciate the assistance. I have quite a lot of other family info to share.

Cheers
