Canada Lookup Request / ZF-3967 Lt. Sam MacDonald, Royal Canadian Regiment
« on: Sunday 25 September 22 22:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find an obituary for this man. I know from his wife Mary's obituary from February 2019 that he passed away in Nova Scotia in 1978.

I can't post his wife's obituary as it lists people still living but he is mentioned twice:

a) Mary was predeceased by her husband, Sam MacDonald (1978)
b) She enjoyed an extensive network of friends given her husband Sam's military service as an RCR Captain.

Grateful for any assistance.

Canada Lookup Request / Herbert S. Thurston, Toronto Police
« on: Monday 31 August 20 13:27 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I wonder if someone could look up the late Herbert S. Thurston for me? I believe the S stood for Stanley

Apparently, there is an obituary for him in the Toronto Star 14 May 1999. He appears in the Toronto City Directories in the 60s as a Sgt, then Inspector with the Toronto police. He was connected with a Brenda J Thurston (same address) who worked for the police as well before disappearing from the 1966 directory.

Many thanks in advance.

This man passed away in Rockford, Illinois on 15 July 2009. I have his obituary but as there are living children I can't post it.

I'd like to find out, if possible, what his middle name was.

Many thanks.

United States of America / Leo James Reynolds, Pleasantville, NJ
« on: Monday 30 December 19 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm looking to find the final fate of Leo James Reynolds, a USAAF veteran of WWII.

Various websites list him as "Leslie" but he was, in fact, Leo. https://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=1&tf=F&q=reynolds%23leo%23j+new+jersey&bc=,sl,sd&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=2988291

Born 1912 in Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1944 he was an aerial gunner on a B17 shot down over France. In the Camden Courier-Post (4 March 1944, pg 1) his next of kin is shown as his wife, Mary and an address: Fire Rd and Ninth Street, Route 3, Pleasantville, NJ

He appears in the Courier-Post on 11 May 1946, pg 2, as "Leo J. Reynolds of Egg Harbor,  a wounded former gunner who will be given a Farm Security Loan check to buy and operate a farm in Atlantic County"

And there I lose track of him.

Grateful for any assistance.

US Completed Requests / James Henry Smith, Montebello, California
« on: Monday 30 December 19 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

I'm hoping someone can find out where and when this man passed.

I have little on him. He was a 2nd Lt in the USAAF (ASN O-698929) when he was shot down in 1944. The Los Angeles Times, 27 August 1944, pg 17 has him as Missing, next of kin wife, Mrs. Winnie F. Smith, Montebello, Ca.

I'm pretty sure this is him, but when he first enlisted. https://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=19&tf=F&q=smith%23james%23h+california&bc=,sl,sd&rpp=10&pg=2&rid=7752307&rlst=7593724,7752307,7989094,7992117,8008961,8017563,8089185,6981400,1789977

The "O" number would come after commissioning.

At the time of capture he would have been 26. When he was put in a German POW camp, he was interviewed by fellow POWs to ensure he wasn't a German plant. That record survives and at least confirms his age.

Grateful for any help.

United States of America / When and where did John P. Hanson die?
« on: Sunday 29 December 19 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find the final fate of John P. Hanson. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on 28 July 1914, the son of Charles I. and Nora (nee Buckley) Hanson. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII, (ASN#32518092, enlisted at Ft Jay, Governor's Island, NY on 2 October 1942). In May of 1943 he is a sergeant, training as an aerial gunner in Colorado. On 4 February 1944 his crew was shot down and he was taken prisoner, returning to the US in May of 1945.

His father,  a Swedish Hudson River tugboat captain, died on January 31, 1952. In his obit, he is listed as "devoted father of John P., Carl F., Joseph W. and the late Timothy A(ugust)" He is interred at St Charles Cemetery, Pine Lawn, NY, as are Nora and Timothy. Timothy and Carl were both paratroopers in the war with the 101st Airborne. Timothy passed away suddenly at the family home, 1961 Coleman St, Brooklyn, in May 1946.

The family moved to Park Ridge, NJ around 1950.

Nora, originally from Co. Cork, Ireland, died on February 7, 1986 at age 100 and her obituary says "Surviving are two sons, Carl of Mount Arlington and Joseph W. of Park Ridge" so presumably John P. has died sometime between 1952 and 1986. Carl passed away in New Jersey May 1989; Joseph W. in 1997

Grateful for any help.

Canada Lookup Request / Ernest George Shepherd, Toronto
« on: Wednesday 18 December 19 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
The a/m passed away in Toronto on 6 March, 1954. He was born 25 February, 1923, the youngest child of Ernest George and Alice Amy (nee White) Shepherd of Toronto. Older siblings were John Ernest Shepherd of Markham and Winnifred Hillyer of Scarboro.

Ernest married Doris Rita (nee O'Neill) 15 December 1945 but she was killed in a car crash in Toronto on 13 May 1946. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/159653148/rita-shepherd

He then married Elizabeth Fabiola Porlier at Christ Church (Anglican) in Mimico, Ontario on 26 January 1951. A daughter resulted from that union.

Can anybody tell me if there was anything in the Toronto media when a) He married Doris b) He married Elizabeth and especially c) When he passed?

I believe he was an electrician at the time.

Many thanks.

Canada Lookup Request / Leslie Frank Head, Vancouver, BC
« on: Sunday 08 December 19 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
I saved the toughest for last. This has proven a real headache.

Leslie Frank Head was born in Vancouver in 1913, the son of Walter Charles and Lillian Daisy (nee Andrews) Head. Married Mildred Doreen Abbott at Vancouver 24 February 1937. Marriage dissolved at New Westminster 1 March 1946.

He married Lillian Elsie (maiden name unknown) in Vancouver in 1946. This marriage ended in 1958.

Leslie makes a final confirmed appearance in the media in 1960 when his son, Walter Frank Head, married Nancy Armstrong Edwards at Vancouver. Leslie's first wife, Mildred, now married to John Percival May was also in attendance.

Not sure if this is him as well but on 1 June 1965 a Leslie Head was a pallbearer at the funeral of a Cuthbert Caunt of Sardis, BC.

Grateful for any help in what happened to Leslie after 1960. Any sign of an obituary? I doubt he is alive but never rule anything out.
