World War Two / Coldstream Guards Service number search
« on: Thursday 12 October 23 17:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my late uncle, George Clark's service in the Coldstream Guards and wish to apply for his service record. It would help greatly if I could provide his service number. He was born 25 Feb 1921, registered Tynemouth. I'm confident that he joined the Coldstreams prior to WW2 as I recall my late mother, his sister, saying that the family were visited by a recruiting sergeant and his father had to sign his agreement. He served throughout WW2. There may be a record out there for 1936-1938, Record set Coldstream Guards 1800-1981. I'd appreciate anyone able to access such a record and let me know what it reveals! Any other suggestions that may help to build the picture would be much appreciated.

World War One / Private Arthur Stevens, Devons and Labour Corps.

I'm trying to find answers for an elderly family friend who is trying to understand how he died (after hostilities ended). I think that his service record was lost, as so many were, so I'm relying on fragments. My problem is understanding his likely whereabouts and identifying his Labour Corps unit. Buried at CWG Giavera del Montello cemetery, Italy, died 7 Dec 1918. Registers of soldiers effects confirm date of death and record him as '25652, 3rd Reserve battalion, Devonshire Regt, then tfrd, as 656444, 1034th Company Labour Corps. He is recorded as died '39 CCS France'. His medal card doesn't include the 14/15 star which confirms the Devons 3rd as being home served. I can't find 1034th Co. Labour Corps, nor such a service number!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Armed Forces / Napoleonic Wars, service records, Thomas Williams, waterloo medal.

I'm researching a soldier who served throughout the Napoleonic wars period. I've discovered quite a lot but I've hit the dreaded wall! If I can find any service records it may answer many questions that relate to his whereabouts. Unfortunately the attachment size limits me but there are questions about his marriage, childrens' locations of birth (Colchester, Weedon, Cambray). I've produced a synopsis of what I know so far and I can pm it. Many thanks, C

Durham / Florence Roxby, suicide 19 October 1913, South Shields
« on: Friday 04 June 21 19:46 BST (UK)  »
Researching a Great aunt that none of the family knew existed! She married a William Husband in Q3 1913 and committed suicide 19/10/13. I'm attaching a newspaper article, her death certificate, and a 1915 newspaper article that, being a deckhand, may refer to the correct William Husband! I don't yet have their marriage certificate but would appreciate help from anyone who can find more information and hopefully identify the correct William Husband. thank you.

Looking for information on my maternal uncle, George Clark. Covid has locked me out of access to my usual haunts and nothing useful on Ancestry! I can apply for his service records but I'm likely to be in a box before the results come through! Anything to help the picture would be much appreciated...
dob 25 Jan 1921, reg'd Tynemouth. Died: 7 Oct 1970. Durham N
Father: George Robert Clark. Address on joining : 1 Peareth Terrace, Birtley, Co. Durham.
I remember that my mother told me that a recruiting 'officer' visited the family home to obtain his Father's signature of approval. One of the two photographs that I have show him in puttees so 1937/38. I remember being told that he served in France and Germany, and was a dispatch rider.
Thanks for any details and/or guidance.

Northumberland / Jeffrey/Henderson/Aynsley/Wilkinson
« on: Thursday 13 December 18 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother, Dorothy Roxby (nee Wilkinson) was a regular contributor to her local newspapers, commenting on her early life in Northumberland and relating information on her forebears.

She was born in Netherwitton, Northumberland in 1858. Her father was John Wilkinson and mother Dorothy Aynsley b.1821. Dorothy Aynsley was the daughter of William Aynsley and Sarah Jeffrey ( who my GGM refers to as ‘Grannie’).

There are various family trees that are well researched for the Wilkinsons and Aynsleys. However whilst Sarah Jeffrey (b.1797 Felton, m.1820 Long Horsley, d. 1872) is included there is no information regarding her origins. The only pointer is that her mother was ‘Jane’.

My GGM writes that her Grannie, Sarah, told her that HER Grandmother’s ‘name was Dorothy Henderson of Chatton Hall. She ran away and married the joiner on the estate whose name was Jeffrey’.

I question 'Chatton Hall' for timing; could Hetton Hall be a candidate?

I’ve been unable to substantiate Sarah’s parentage and would appreciate any suggestions.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / David Lambert of New Malton 1737 - 1799
« on: Monday 13 August 18 15:00 BST (UK)  »
I've researched a family line back to David Lambert, as the attachment. Albeit I've found so much information following his training in York (It looks like he financed himself so no link to a parent) and subsequent life in New and Old Malton I've been unable to establish his parentage and origins. I can't find a likely candidate in records available online but there does appear to be some association with the wine trade. I really have hit a brick wall on this and would appreciate any guidance, local knowledge, or hints! Many thanks,Colin

Armed Forces / Commander John Lambert R.N. Napoleonic wars period.
« on: Thursday 17 May 18 17:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm working back a friend's family and find, in the 1851 census, that the head of the family was a widow of 'a Commander in the Royal Navy'. Three unmarried daughters, first 1817 Chelsea, second 1823 Malton, Yorks,; third 1824 (probably 1819). Information given to me that he was John Lambert.
I've tried National archive search but nothing fits. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Glamorganshire / 1891 Swansea address
« on: Tuesday 17 April 18 18:49 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to establish the place of birth. The certificate states date of birth as 10th November 1891 and place of birth '2 Roseland Terrace, Sketty, Swansea Lower'. I've trawled the 1891 census but can't locate it. There was a vague Roseland terrace but nowhere near! Help!
