Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Finding births pre 1837
« on: Tuesday 03 August 21 13:17 BST (UK)  »
I have had loads of support from Roots Chat over the years and am extremely grateful for those giving their free time and help.
I/ We have searched for a missing family member since 1946 when the genealogy was started by an earlier generation !
The person in question was supposedly born about 1821. She says Covent Garden. We have found no evidence of that. Over her life she lived in Hackney, Tower Hamlets ,Devizes and Yorkshire.
In 1841 she was living with her Aunt in The Castle Hotel Devizes. Prior to that she was living with the same Aunt and her first husband in Yorkshire. She inherits a large amount of money and money in trust from her Aunts elderly husband when he dies around 1835. This information comes from a will. It also shows that she now has the same “adoptive” surname has her younger sister who still lives in London with her “adoptive” parents. It appears that her parents must have died.
I have deliberately not given her full name because I don’t want to waste people’s time searching for her post 1841. We have everything and more on her life !
My question is where else could I look ?
She has a Wiltshire surname and I’ve searched.
She gives Covent Garden as Place of birth and I’ve searched.
Is there anything else I could do ?
Thank you for reading this ....it is rather long winded !!!

London and Middlesex / Mrs Fawkes of Regent Street London linked to Perry/ Maslin
« on: Sunday 29 March 20 12:07 BST (UK)  »
Clutching at straws here !
I have a legal document showing that Louisa Elizabeth Maslin Evett Perry left Devizes and went to Regent Street London to stay with Mrs Fawkes. It was 1851 so I have trawled the London census but haven’t found either of them. Of course it could be She lived there before the night of the census or after.    I have also searched the countries marriage records from 1837 onwards for a marriage of a Mr Fawkes that might fit. I can find nothing but of course she may have married before 1837. Has anyone any ideas of where else to look ? Thank you.

Someone has asked for my advice and I’m not sure where to suggest.

She has a small family document dated 1812 which appears to be a medical prescription. Various people have tried to transcribe it but to no avail. We wonder if that may be because it is chemical terminology and possibly Latin. (I have not seen the document) One suggestion has been the Wellcome Library which we will try.      Any more suggestions please ?

Cardiganshire / Margaret Jones
« on: Saturday 29 July 17 23:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been working with a family member on this genealogy for fifteen years. My Aunt has died and left me all the research. We hit a brick wall with Margaret Jones. She was born in Philadelphia in 1877 Her parents were John Rowland Jones and Catherine Jones previously Howells and nee Jones. Margaret was the third of four daughters in this marriage. Her parents came from Aberystwyth and emigrated around 1871. They returned to Dalton London and are in the 1881 census. In the 1891 census she is fourteen and recorded as living at home. By 1901 census all the children have left home. Family information states that a trust fund was set up for Margaret Jones and that my grandfather regularly took her money until she was found dead in an attic room in 1926. My grandfather identified the body. We have been lead to believe she had become a prostitute. They were an extremely religious family and her parents were reasonably well off.  Can any one give me ideas where or how I could continue my search for her ? I have no idea if she married but of course she may have changed her name. I have spent the day searching all the Margaret Jones I could find. Then I began on all the Margarets in the 1901 census who gave the USA as place of birth. I'm not having much success ! Not surprising with such a common name. Just wondered if there is anything I may have missed. Thank you. 🤔

Europe / Belgian records
« on: Tuesday 16 August 16 17:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi ,not sure if this is the correct place to ask. A friend has Belgian family and asked me where to
look ! I'm ok with UK,Ireland and USA but have no idea where to begin.
I've suggested the usual of gleaning all possible info from elderly living relatives but I have no idea where to search for BMDs particularly as I believe the country may have two separate systems Walloon and Flemish ?
Could someone set me straight and maybe suggest a starting point when working from here in the UK. Thank you.

United States of America / Birth records and census Philadelphia
« on: Wednesday 15 July 15 13:00 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother and her parents and sisters emigrated to Philadelphia around 1871.

Great great grandparents were John Rowland Jones and his wife Catherine Jones and their daughter (by a previous marriage) Miriam Howells aged about 11 years. Unusually Catherine was about ten years older than her husband.

They remained there living in Chestnut Avenue we believe for about ten years. They were active members of the Welsh community and we still have letters and scrap books that they brought back with them.

How do I go about finding where they lived?
Two more daughters were born there, how do I get birth certs?
I believe John Rowland Jones was some sort of journalist as we have his pass for the Exhibition in Philadelphia.

I would be very grateful for any ideas as to how to research in America. All I have been able to access is their return home.
Thank you. ???

United States of America / Jones family Philadelphia
« on: Friday 06 March 15 17:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can any one point me in the direction of finding great great grandparents John Rowlands Jones and his wife Catherine ? The went from Aberystwyth with Catherine's daughter by her first marriage who was Miriam Howells. There were also two more girls.
I have found (with Roots Chat help) their return journey in 1877 (they went to Kingsland Road in North East London ) but would like to know where they were during the seven or eight years residence in the USA. They brought back scrap books of info which we still have and I had thought they lived in Chestnut Avenue.
Can any one tell me where to look in Philadelphia ?  Thanks.

« on: Saturday 31 January 15 11:36 GMT (UK)  »
Catherine Jones married Michael Howells in Aberystwyth. They had a daughter Miriam Howells  DOB 1860.Michael died about 1861 and Catherine remarried a John Rowlands Jones of Aber who was ten years her junior. They emigrated to Chestnut Avenue in Philadelphia.By then there were two children and later three more were born in the USA. Around 1878 they returned to Islington London. How can I find information of their stay in America e.g. registration of birth? Where could I look for passage out and back ? Are there any groups in Philadelphia who deal with genealogy of the Welsh?  ???
