London and Middlesex / De Butler
« on: Thursday 28 June 18 09:51 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with this surname please?  I'm well and truly stuck.

At the moment these are the only records I have for an ancestor, Louisa De Butler:

1834 marriage, St George's Hanover Square, 'Edward Frederick Towerzey and Louisa de Butler, both of this parish, married'
1841 census, Norton Street, Marylebone with husband and three oldest children, Louisa Towerzey aged 30, yes to born in county
1842 daughter's birth certificate where she is the informant, 'mother, Louisa Towerzey, formerly De Butler'
1842 daughter's Catholic baptism from St Patrick's, Soho Square.  It's in Latin and states mother as 'Ludovica de Buttler'
1848 burial record and death certificate are in her married name, both state she was 44 years of age

Thanks in advance for any help!

London and Middlesex / 1850s prison records
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 10:18 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor indicted at Westminster in 1852, sentenced to 12 months for housebreaking.

I can see this information on the 'England and Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791 - 1892' dataset on A*try.

Thereafter I can find nothing further about him.

Does anyone have any idea as to which prison he may have been sent to, or any pointers for how to find this information?

Thanks for any help

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Jesse Hendy
« on: Saturday 21 May 16 14:45 BST (UK)  »
I have a Jesse Hendy in my tree, for whom I've found the following:

OPR Baptism - 1828 Shalfleet
1841 - aged 18, living in Ningwood, Shalfleet with parents, occupation labourer
1851 - aged 22, living in Ningwood, Shalfleet with parents, occupation brick maker
1861 - can't locate
1871 - can't locate
1881 - can't locate
1891 - with sister, Jane Barnes, Moons Lane/Moons Hill, Freshwater/Totland, age unclear but looks to be 67 although A/try transcription says 57, no occupation given, martial status single

That's it, nothing more, can anyone see anything that I can't and help me fill in some of the spaces?  I wondered if the name Jesse was ever interchangeable with any other Christian name?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have recently found an English record amongst my hitherto exclusively Scottish ancestors so would be grateful for some advice please.

I see from the LDS indexes a marriage for James SUTER/SUTTER (later becoming SOUTER, SOUTTER, SOULTER - he was born outside of Montrose in 1790) marrying Hannah Havercroft 1 Jul 1816, Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull.  Their several children were baptised at either 'Hull', 'Kingston Upon Hull', and 'Sculcoates'.  The family had moved to Dundee by the 1841 census.

What sort of information would these records contain?  If more than the above narrative, how would I go about obtaining copies of these records?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Occupation Interests / Merchant seaman 1850s - Dundee/Montrose - advice please
« on: Friday 24 February 12 19:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out some more information about the fate of an ancestor ... John Lindsay, born Montrose 1808.  He is not listed (?at sea) on the 1841 census although his wife and children are – they are in Montrose.  By 1847 the family are in Dundee.  On the 1851 census the family are in Dundee still; John’s occupation is ‘seaman’.  On his daughter's 1855 marriage certificate his occupation is ‘mariner’; John was present at this occasion.  On his son’s Australian marriage certificate of 1860 John’s occupation is ‘merchant seaman’.  By the 1861 census his wife is listed as a widow, on her 1875 death certificate his occupation is listed as ‘seaman, merchant service’ .

I cannot find a likely death certificate in the  National Archives of Scotland for John Lindsay; this may mean, as recording such data was by this time compulsory, that he did not die in Scotland.  How did he die?  Are there records relating to his professional life – where did he travel?

I have looked into merchant seamen records at Kew but found nothing conclusive ... there are quite a few John Lindsays based in Montrose and Dundee!  I believe I have his register ticket number and the ship he was attached to in 1836, obtained from BT120/3, but am not sure if I can do anything further with this information?

I would be grateful for any help or advice.  Thank you!

Angus (Forfarshire) / Tannadice local knowledge?
« on: Monday 12 September 11 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching Lindsays who are variously listed in Tannadice OPRs of the 1760s/70s as being from:

'Auchquhoble' or 'Quhoble' or 'Whoble' or 'Jachoble' ... I am guessing that they are one in the same place and probably the name of a farm/croft as I know 'Auch' means field ... but does anyone have any other ideas/knowledge?

I can't see anything resembling this name on later maps or census returns ...

Thanks!

Lanarkshire / Early 1800s Barony: Ann Milnes/Mills/Miller/Millar brickwall
« on: Friday 04 March 11 09:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I've been looking at this myself for a while and wondered if a fresh pair of eyes may help me decide if I can move this query forward or if I should best give up!

I am trying to locate information on Ann Milnes/Mills/Miller, wife of Robert Fettes, a hosier/stocking maker; he was born in Montrose in 1774 and died in Montrose in 1844.

In the OPRs Ann is mentioned at her marriage of July 1800; ‘Robert Fettes, Stocking Maker, Glasgow, and Ann Milnes residenter there (long gap on paper) irregularly’.  I take the long gap and the ’irregularly’ to be because she is first mentioned in the OPRs a month before her wedding, as Ann Mills, at the christening of her child William in June 1800, witnesses Alexander Reid and John   Millroy/McIllroy.

In 1803 she is mentioned as Ann Mills again at the christening of her son John, witnesses John Millroy/McIlroy and James Pollock.  In 1804 her daughter Margaret was christened, witnesses Andrew Duncan and Hector McDonald.  In 1808 she is listed as Ann Miller at the christening of ‘child 6’ (although there is no record of children four and five in the OPRs) Mary Ann, witnesses Robert Donaldson and John (unclear) Mufoil.  The OPRs mention the family living in Westmuir, Barony.  The last mention is as Ann Mills again at the birth of her seventh child in 1811, another John, witnesses John Anderson and Daniel McNeil/McNiel.

It looks as if the family followed the ‘usual’ naming pattern for Robert Fettes’ parents so am I looking for a father named John and a mother named Mary or Ann?  Although the fact that there are two births ‘missing’ may mean that this is not worth taking as ‘fact’.  The only other clue I have is that a grandchild of Ann has the middle name ‘Miller’ as opposed to ‘Milnes’ or ‘Mills’.  I’ve looked into the witnesses to see if any were married to anyone with a familiar surname but this has also proved fruitless.  I've also looked in the Newspapers and Post Office Directories of early 1800s Glasgow to try to find anything on these people but have found nothing.

Thank you if you’ve managed to read this far and even more thanks if you have any ideas on this one.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Copland - Montrose and Farnell
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone researching the Copland/Coupland family who were based in Montrose and Farnell at the end of the 1700s and early 1800s?

I’m interested in James Copland, master of the sloop ‘Two Brother’s of Montrose’, who died in 1823 in Montrose. His last will and testament mentions a sister, Agnes, married to Robert Lindsay, a tailor in Montrose (they were married 1795 in Montrose), another sister, Ann, widow of David Brechin (they were married in 1794 in Farnell) and a half sister, Jean.

Who were their parents? Where were the children born? I am unable to locate any conclusive information from the local OPRs.

Was Agnes Copland married first to an Andrew Souter/Soutter in Farnell in 1789?

Are these Coplands related to the Coplands of Myerstone/Rescobie some of whom are buried in Tannadice churchyard?

The name Copland seems rare for Angus at this time, it is more common in Aberdeenshire and Dumfries.
