Lanarkshire / Grandfather at either Coatdyke Hospital or Coatmill Hospital
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
Just before he died in 1962, my grandfather, John P Martin, was living at a place called Merrystone House, Coatbridge.      I suspect that was an old folks Care Home - does anyone know if that is right?

....Before that, I remember visiting him in a hospital at Coatdyke, and up until now I have always thought that it was Coatdyke Hospital, but I see on the map there is Coathill Hospital.        Is there, or was there, also a Coatdyke Hospital?      If there wasn't, then it must have been Coathill Hospital I visited.     Would just like to know.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Kenneth Martin image.
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
I just wondered if it might be possible to improve this terribly worn out photo of my father, Kenny Martin, in the cockpit of a plane.       He was in the RAF from 1936 to 1946.       Perhaps it could be cropped at the bottom up to where that shadow begins......

Technical Help / Virus on my computer
« on: Saturday 15 December 18 20:10 GMT (UK)  »

I had Reimage security trying to get me to join up with them, saying my computer had a virus.       I didn't bother.      I think they get you alarmed because they want to scare you into signing up for their security AT A PRICE!

Renfrewshire / Anyone know about Strone Villa?
« on: Friday 31 August 18 22:02 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine was a nurse at Strone Villa in the Gourock area.     She is on the 1911 Census as a Nurse, although she was actually a qualified midwife.    I am trying to find out what kind of place Strone Villa was.    Head of the house in 1911 was a David Arthur, 80, a retired Manufacturing Chemist, a daughter living with him along with two baby grandsons.

Would like to know the address of this Strone Villa and if it still exists.    Is "Strone" the name of a district at Gourock?

Technical Help / What does 001 mean?
« on: Monday 16 July 18 12:27 BST (UK)  »
I am on Windows 7 at the moment, and I scan photos all the time.     Once I have scanned a photo, I get the Import Pictures box, asking me to name the picture.    So I name it, and click Import.    Next page that comes up has the photo with the tagged name underneath - but with 001 at the end.     What is this 001?     What does it signify?

World War Two / WW2 aircrew brevet
« on: Sunday 15 July 18 20:56 BST (UK)  »
The attached photo is of my father's brother and I have only just noticed that he is wearing what I believe (after investigating it) is an "Aircrew Brevet").    I know that he flew in Lancaster bombers over Germany, but can anyone tell me what this badge means?      The badge appears to have AG on it.       Anyone know if you had to make a fixed number of flights before you qualified for the badge he is wearing?

Lancashire / Midwives - strange uniforms.
« on: Saturday 14 July 18 11:57 BST (UK)  »
My G/grandmother was a Qualified midwife.   She was born Edith Rachel Wilson in 1874, married a Holmes and then lived mainly in Manchester till she died in 1949.      I have attached photos of her in a cape and a coat, which was apparently the midwives uniform.      I am wondering if the uniform was always the same design or could the date of these photos be traced by the design of the strange looking uniform.       If she wore this in Glasgow in her young days, I can imagine her getting "second looks" quite a lot, and maybe a few wisecracks as well.      Anyone know if this was the normal uniforn, and does anyone have a rough idea when they might have been taken?

The photo has a window in the background advertising Spirella Corsets.      Don't suppose anyone from Manchester knows if Spirella had a place like that...    anyone know where this place was?      I am pretty sure it would be Manchester, but there is an outside chance that it could be Glasgow.

A second, more serious question ...    when Edith Rachel died in Manchester, my grandmother had her body brought up from Manchester to be buried in the family grave up here.     Curious as to how this was arranged.      How would the coffin & body be transported - by train perhaps.    And then what when it arrived at Central station.     What then?

Technical Help / Timelines and Lifelines
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 09:52 BST (UK)  »
I have been using Genes Reunited recently, and I do like their Lifeline, because it is blank at the start and I then add things to it.     I can take a photo from Keepsafe, (which will have a date on it,) and it can go easily onto the Lifeline in date order.    The only thing is that Genes Reunited often acts drunk - the page sticks or you have to fiddle about before you can get a Lifeline to show the correct information in the correct Lifeline.
I don't like Find My Past so much because they don't allow a photo to be added onto a Timeline the way that Genes Reunited does, and Ancestry isn't quite what I want.     I don't want a site that decides what goes on a Timeline.     I want to be the one who decides that.       I like the way Genes does it but people seem to be having problems (not just me) with its reliability.

Technical Help / phishing problem
« on: Wednesday 19 July 17 19:48 BST (UK)  »
I received an email, supposedly from RBS bank.       It is suspicious because I know that the bank will NEVER contact me by email.       I phoned  0800 161 5154 and they advice that if I haven't opened it then no need to worry but to forward it to the number 88355.

Problem is I don't think that's a telephone number.     I tried it and nothing happened.
Mystified as to exactly what is meant by 88355
