Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Latin margin note to PCC probate 1666
« on: Tuesday 12 September 23 00:41 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with this short passage in Latin added to the margin of the probate record of a PCC will? The will - of Richard Cooth of Sherborne - was originally proved by his widow Margaret in 1652 but this was added in 1666. I assume it's something to do with his grandson taking over the administration but my Latin's not up to a full translation.

Thank you
David

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Very old shorthand
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Ancestry have a set of images which they describe as the register 1683-1795 of the non-conformist burial ground at Broadmead in Bristol. It's actually only a partial transcript with a fraction of the entries in the original  but interspersed with lines of what I assume are some sort of shorthand. Presumably written after 1795, perhaps not long after. Can anyone identify it?

I've attached a portion with a rich sample. If you have access to Ancestry the images are at https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/61689/images/engl0082d_30251-bd-rs-4_m_00004

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / More help with Latin
« on: Tuesday 27 June 23 23:05 BST (UK)  »
A burial entry in the register of Chew Magna in Somerset, 1566, reads

Richarde Kinge minister ab arbore cadens mat: ye xith of July

I guess that the "mat:" abbreviates some form of "materia" but I see that can mean a branch of a tree or a cause. So was the poor chap hit by a falling branch or did he fall out of the tree himself? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Hearth Tax Lookup
« on: Sunday 15 December 19 10:59 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone here with a copy of the Derbyshire hearth tax assessments book willing to do a lookup, please? I'm interested in the Brocksop family, particularly in Chesterfield parish but anywhere they may turn up. (They come with lots of different spellings, even sometimes Brockshaw or similar.)

Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Probate Court record (Latin, 1618)
« on: Saturday 05 October 19 00:04 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me decipher the attached entry from the Act books of the Probate Court of Diocese of Lichfield. I think the gist of it is that Christopher Bower has been administering the estate of Alice Elliot "rashly" (without the court's knowledge?) but is now trying to make it legal, and says it worth less the 40s anyway. Can anyone confirm that, or give a more accurate translation?

(A Christopher Bower married an Alice Elliot in Chesterfield in 1616, so I guess the Alice in the entry was his mother-in-law.)

Thank you

Devon / POMEROYs of Farway
« on: Sunday 26 August 18 13:06 BST (UK)  »
Branching off from the thread on the Pomeroys of Stoke Gabriel, I wonder if anyone is connected to, or interested in, the branch of the family that lived at and around Farway. (Included on this page  https://sites.google.com/site/pomeroytwig/home/honiton-pomeroys of slightlyfoxed's site.)

My youngest Pomeroy ancestor is the Amy who married Robert Cox at Farway in 1769, who appears to be the daughter of William and Anne baptised there in 1747. (The John Pomeroy at her wedding was a witness, not necessarily her father.)

There are at least three families with a William as the father baptising children in the area around that time but the available records only give two Williams born a generation earlier.

William son of William and Hannah, Gittisham, 1705
William son of John and Katherine, Farway, 1716

Mr William Pomeroy of Gittisham & Mrs Mary Pearce otp m. Honiton 1732
Wiliam Pomeroy & Anne Cload m. Ofwell 1745
William Pomeroy & Christian Cox both of Farwell m. Combe Raleigh 1753

William and Mary appear to have baptised children at Honiton in 1733, 1743 and 1749 (plus possibly Will son of Will buried in 1741).

William and Anne baptised children at Farway in 1747, 1749, 1751 and Jun 1754 (Nicholas).

William and Christian had children at Farway in March 1754,  May 1755 (Nicholas), 1757, 1759, 1761, 1763. (There is a burial record for a Nicholas, Jun 1755.)

Unless there is another unrecorded William the most likely explanation seems to me to be that the 1705 William married twice, to Mary and Christian and that the 1716 William married Anne, but various public trees have other combinations. Does anyone have any more info?

Armed Forces / Under age soldier 1825
« on: Saturday 25 April 15 19:54 BST (UK)  »
According to his Record of Service, a certain John Baker enlisted in the 46th Regiment of Foot on 23 July 1825, aged 17 years (number of months blank). The table showing periods of service in each rank starts with

  Rank            From           To              Years Days
Private    23 July 1825  22 July 1826   under age
Private    23 July 1826  31 Dec  1828    2      161

Does any one know what age limit was being applied?  Could it mean that he turned 18 on 23 July, or some other age, or was it just that if you joined under age, the first year didn't count whenever your birthday was?

His age at discharge on 22 Aug 1848 was given as 40  9/12 years, suggesting his birthday was around December.

Thanks

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Mellis, Thornham Magna or Gislingham - Marriage 1860
« on: Friday 19 September 14 09:36 BST (UK)  »
The FreeBMD index shows a marriage in Q4 1860 in the Hartismere District of Charles BENNETT and Mary Ann ANNIS. If they are the couple I'm looking for then he was born in Mellis and she in Thornham Magna or Gislingham so those would be the most likely places for the wedding.

If anyone has access to the registers of any of these parishes I'd be very grateful if you could check for the marriage and report any details.

(It's possible the bride may be recorded as Sarah Ann rather than Mary Ann.)

Thank  you

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Lacock Marriage 1787 - BUTCHER and GINGELL
« on: Thursday 08 September 11 15:52 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone confirm this marriage, which I only have from a member submission to the IGI?

Thomas BUTCHER and Elizabeth GINGELL  at Lacock, 27 Dec 1787.

There are at least three candidates for Elizabeth, born in the area at a suitable time, so any further details, especially the witnesses, could be useful.

Thank you for looking

David
