Yorkshire (West Riding) / Mystery occupation 1886
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 17:00 BST (UK)  »
On the 25th December 1886 Grace Kingdon married George Ashworth Sames at St Andrew's church, Leeds. The occupation given for George looks like Hickle and Gill maker, Of course, I could well be wrong! Could anyone please either correct be and/or explain what the occupation means?

Thank you.  :)

Buckinghamshire / Arthur William HARRIS, born Great Marlow 1878
« on: Friday 03 March 23 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
My great uncle was Arthur William HARRIS born 1877/1878 in Great Marlow. His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1878 and he was baptised in 24th April 1878.

The story, from the family, says that he had a row with his parents, walked out and was never seen again.

In 1901 he was living at home in Queen's Road, Marlow, and was a brewer's labourer.
In 1911 he in no longer at home but the census return states that all six children are still living.
I think I have eliminated all entries for Arthur Harris born around 1877/1878 in the 1921 census.

For years I have tried to find Arthur. If anyone can think of anything that I have missed please let me know. I keep returning to the mystery as it a constant niggling irritation in the back of my mind.

The Common Room / SS London sank in the Bay of Biscay 1866 en route to Australia
« on: Tuesday 14 February 23 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
SS London sank in the Bay of Biscay 1866 en route to Australia. On board was one Charles Gough. I have used Trove and various other websites but I cannot place Charles. Charles was drowned, amongst over 200 others. Can anyone suggest any ideas where I might get a lead on Charles? He appears to be a distant relative but I am struggling to place him. I have no idea of his date or place of birth.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / LAY-THOMAS marriage 1918
« on: Tuesday 02 August 22 10:31 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover what happened to Lizzie LAY (birth registered Q3 1898 in Wandsworth registration district; baptised at St Bartholomew, Battersea on 3rd August 1898; 1901 living with grandmother in Battersea, born Battersea; 1911 living at 21 Arliss Road, Lavender Hill, Battersea). I am fairly sure that she married Charles E Thomas Q2 1918 in Wandsworth registration district. However, after that I can find no trace, This is the only male THOMAS to female LAY marriage registered in England and Wales between 1895 and 1936. There are two births - Margaret G THOMAS in Q4 1918 and a male THOMAS in 1923 - both with mother's maiden name LAY and both in London. I cannot find them in 1921 or in 1939.

Can anyone think of anything that I haven't explored yet that might help me to verify the marriage without sending off for the certificate or find them records after 1918? (I have looked at FreeReg.)

Cheshire Lookup Requests / EDGE KERR BARTLE 1900s
« on: Thursday 30 June 22 14:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

One of my relatives, Marion Kathleen BARTLE (or Kathleen Marion BARTLE or Molly BARTLE) married Eric W EDGE on 18th April 1942 at St Seiriol's, Penmaenmawr, Caernarvonshire, Wales. The Groom, as reported in the North Wales Weekly News was the son of son of Mrs. KERR and the late Mr. W. EDGE, of Moreton, Wirral, Cheshire. I have more or less discounted Eric Walter EDGE, born in the third quarter of 1916 in Northwich RD and Eric William EDGE born in the second quarter of 1913 in West Derby RD.

Does anyone have any ideas about who this Eric W EDGE might be?

London and Middlesex / HATLEY family 1861 and 1851
« on: Thursday 21 April 22 18:01 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help me find the following family in 1851 and/or 1861 censuses?

From the children's births it is pretty obvious that they were living in London. I have searched and searched but I'm at a complete loss.

Henry Hatley born circa 1819 in West End or South Stoneham, Hampshire
Ann Hatley, his wife, born circa 1824 in Wandsworth, Surrey
Their children:
Henry, birth registered in Q3 1943 born Wandsworth, Surrey
George John, birth registered in Q4 1846 born Westminster registration district
Charlotte Ann, birth registered in Q2 1850 born Pimlico
Thomas, birth registered in Q1 1857 born Lambeth registration district
Walter, birth registered in Q4 1858 born St George Hanover Square registration district (Hattley)
Fanny, birth registered in Q3 1860 born St George Hanover Square registration district

By 1864 they were back in the Wandsworth area for birth of their daughter, Alice Mary, whose birth was registered in Q1.

Any help would be gratefully received, thank you.

Buckinghamshire / All Saints, Great Marlow pre 1837
« on: Tuesday 05 April 22 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is any way to access marriages at All Saints before 1837 without going to the Records Office? I live too far away to make that feasible. I have transcripts from 1837 onwards.

Buckinghamshire / BEAVER family of Great Marlow 1878-1890
« on: Thursday 04 November 21 18:37 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to Great Marlow baptisms? I have the books at home but I am away and I (obviously) cannot access them right now. I am looking for Beaver baptisms between 1878 and 1890 - either children of George / George Thomas and Sarah Fanny Beaver and also children of Frederick and Ellen Beaver. Since both women had Crew as a maiden name it is hard to sort out the children, especially as some were baptised and died in between censuses. If anyone can help I will be most grateful and it will put me out of my misery!

Somerset / BEAVER families of Roadwater/Old Cleeve
« on: Wednesday 03 November 21 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
My great great grandmother remarried after the birth of my great grandmother. Two children from this marriage moved from Great Marlow in Buckinghamshire to Roadwater. According to the 1911 census they had 28 children between them. Sadly both married wives whose maiden names were Crew(e). I can separate out the living children fairly well but the eight who died before 1911 present a problem. Does anyone know if I can access the parish records of Old Cleeve (where I assume that they would have been baptised) from 1890 onwards? I should be able to sort out the two who I know were born in Great Marlow (when I get home) but still need to find baptisms for William (c 1897), Daniel and Daisy (c 1904) and one as yet unknown. I'm reasonably hopeful as Beaver is not a particularly common Somerset name.

If anyone is related to the either family I would be really happy to hear from them.

P.S. I have now found the Old Cleeve registers online and no sign of any baptisms for Beaver children. Any ideas of where I should look next?
