Lincolnshire / Edward Amos Gt Gonerby
« on: Tuesday 26 September 17 14:10 BST (UK)  »
I am tracing the Amos of Grantham family tree and have come to a standstill. I understand that there is an Edward Amos buried in Gt Gonerby on 24/11/1834, I assume the grave is in the graveyard of St Sebastian Church. Does anyone live near the church who would be able to try and track down the gravestone, and if it's still legible, let me know the inscription?
Thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Thomas Dawkin(s) Sutton on Forest
« on: Sunday 28 June 15 15:18 BST (UK)  »
My great grand father Thomas henry Dawkin(s) first appears in official records on the 1881 census aged 15, living with the Joseph Beck family in Sutton on Forest, he is an apprentice tailor. His birthplace is shown as Keighley in the West Riding, but his birth is not registered there. He gives the same birthplace on all future census forms and when he marries Betty Webster in Sutton on Forest in 1887, he shows his father as Thomas Henry Dawkin dec'd; I have been unable to find any trace of records of his father. The 1871 census shows that Joseph Beck had a different apprentice and so I assume, my great grandfather moved in with the Beck family sometime between 1871 and 1881. Does anyone have any ideas about how Thomas Dawkin might have ended up in an apprenticeship in Sutton, it's about 40 miles from Keighley? I am trying to follow up any leads which might help identify his family history prior to 1881.
Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / "Top of The Fairground" Wakefield
« on: Friday 06 February 15 16:38 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1851 census, my ancestors William & Martha LINFORD are shown as residing at "Top of The Fairground" Wakefield. Looking at nearby properties on the census I think this might be near Westgate. Does anyone know if there were houses at Top of The Fairground, or were they living in a caravan of sorts?
Thanks

Armed Forces / William Linford Waterloo Medal Roll
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
Ancestry shows that Wm Linford was a private in the 1st Battalion 52nd Regiment of Foot, sub unit Capt John Shiddons Co and that he was awarded the Waterloo Medal. I am trying to find out if this is my ancestor William Linford born Wakefield Yorkshire abt 1787. Census info for 1851 show him living in Wakefield with wife Martha and he describes himself as " Chelsea Pensioner". Martha dies in 1854 and the 1861 census shows William aged 74 now resident in The Royal Chelsea Hospital; he dies there in 1884. Does anyone have access to records with additional information about soldiers in the Waterloo campaign or advice about tracking down a more detailed army/pensioner record? Any help would be much appreciated.

Derbyshire / John Amos born 1764 Duffield
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
This is a long shot. I have researched my family history back to John Amos b abt 1764 d 1842 a Grantham Lincs chair maker/wheelwright.  However, I haven't been able to discover his parents and place of birth. On the Family Search website there is a John Amos baptised 25/12/1764 at Duffield Derbyshire, parents Thomas and Anne, sister Mary baptised 19/8/1762. The Christian names Thomas, Anne and Mary all feature in the family tree of John Amos of Grantham and I'm wondering if his family originates from Derbyshire. Has anyone any information about the Derbyshire John Amos, am I barking up the wrong tree?? Any help would be appreciated.

Lincolnshire / Odd Fellows Inn North Parade Manthorpe Cum Little Gonerby Grantham
« on: Monday 29 December 14 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
In the course of my research into my ancestor John Amos the Grantham chairmaker born abt 1764, I have established that before his death in 1842 he was living in North Parade (he owned property in North Parade) and is described as a "retailer of beer". The 1881 census reveals his granddaughter Millicent Priestman was a beer house keeper, Odd Fellows Inn at 35 North Parade. I don't think the Odd fellows Inn still exists, does anyone with knowledge of Grantham know what the building is now and does anyone have any further information about The Odd Fellows?
Thanks and a happy new year to all

« on: Sunday 15 January 12 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
The butcher's shop in Watergate (34/35) Grantham was owned by the Amos family during the c19; I understand that before it's demolition it might have had the sign Amos & Shepherd outside. Does anyone have a photo of the premise or know where I could obtain a copy?

Midlothian / Elizabeth Bredrie
« on: Thursday 28 April 11 15:54 BST (UK)  »
Elizabeth Bredrie, born abt 1801, is my Gt Grandmother/ 3. The only info I have about her is that she moved to Yorkshire and married Benjamin Whitehead in 1822; she gives her birthplace on census forms as Edinburgh. Can anyone suggest ways I could develop her family tree? This is the first relative I have found from north of the border and the web sites I have used to date seem to only detail English records. Thanks
