Tyrone / Hamiltons of Gortanigan

My 2xgreat grandparents were Thomas Norris and Margaret Hamilton who married 9 Feb 1846. I have come to a brickwall with both of them unfortunately.

I know that Margaret's father was John Hamiton and that she was living at Gortanigan (Cappagh) at time of marriage. I can find her father John on tithe applotments in 1827. Out of Margaret's 7 children only 2 had children who lived to adulthood. Of those only one (my great grandmother) had any descendants.

I am reasonably happy that I have located a brother for Margaret in Alexander Hamilton who married Jane Brown in Mountjoy Church in 1855. Alexander was also living at Gortanigan and had a father John. Alexander and Jane had at least one child (John in 1857) and after that I can find no trace of them which is frustrating.

So I'm looking for something on Alexander & Jane or some evidence of other siblings for Margaret or something to help me locate my correct Hamilton family.

Lanarkshire / McDowell & Stephen families of Coatbridge and Partick

I have been doing some research on the McDowell family of County Antrim and found a Robert McDowell (wife Agnes Rainey/Rennie) who moved to Coatbridge, Old Monkland about 1880. Roibert died 29 April 1896.

Their eldest daughter Mary (born in County Antrim) married George Stephen in 1893, a police segeant, and moved to Partick where they had at least 4 children - George, Robert McDowell, Alexander (who married Catherine Bryson Thomson in 1921) and Agnes.

Other children born in Old Monkland were Agnes (17 July 1881), Robert (16 Feb 1873), Euphemia (1876), Jane (1879) and James (1889).

I am trying to trace the offspring of this family as so as to prove a link between them and their County Antrim relatives. Do the names above sound familiar to anyone?

Antrim / Have you any Melville ancestors?

I have undertaken a project to link up all Melvilles in Northern Ireland into families and have made some great progress so far. I ultimately want to connect all the paperwork (births, marriages, deaths, wills, census records) and have managed to do a lot of that already. I hope that eventually I am able to prove more connections through DNA testing.

I'm not just looking for people who are called Melville but also those who descend from a Melville down a female line. Also photos can help if resemblances can be seen across the various families.

So far I have found three major families in Belfast, one that moved to Carrick/Larne and another two in County Down - in Banbridge and around Donaghadee/Bangor.

I would particularly like to hear from any descendants of Andrew Melville who started off the undertaking business in Belfast, I have managed to trace his line as far as the 1911 census but that's my major stumbling block at the moment.

So if you can help me at all with this project please get in contact!

Antrim / Douay of Magheragall

My 4xgreat grandmother was Elizabeth Douay who married Oliver Brown in Magheragall. I have already found baptisms of their children and Oliver's will, dates of death etc.

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of the surname Douay before? I was wondering if this could be a Huguenot name, though I have never found it listed in any books about them.

I have also found that the name Downey is found in the same area (Magheragall/Lisburn), does anyone know of any examples were Douay became known as another surname such as Downey? Would this be likely?

Antrim / Patricks of Carnmoney

I am working on the family of William Patrick and Elizabeth Taggart of Carnmoney. I have recently came across this post from 2001:

It states that Mary Patrick married Francis Ferguson. After her death in 1837 he moved to the US with their 7 children, one of whom was General James Ferguson of the Mormon Batallion, I have also found plenty on Ancestry about the descendants of this couple.

What I am trying to establish is what sources were used for the about post to establish
(a) that the parents of William Patrick were Hugh & Rachel.
(b) that the Mary who married Francis Ferguson was the daughter of William Patrick and Elizabeth Taggart.

The family I am working on descends from William, eldest son of William Patrick and Elizabeth Taggart and I want to be sure that I don't add the other information (Hugh, Mary etc) until it is verified.

All suggestions welcome!

I have been clearing out the house of an elderly uncle and came across a photo which is probably of a family member. There is no name or date on it and no name of a studio though it would have probably been taken in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Has anyone any idea what time period this would have been from?

Canada / West Wawanosh - Armstrong family

I have discovered I am related to the Armstrongs of West Wawanosh who emigrated from County Antrim, Northern Ireland in the 1860s (which I live). William Armstrong (1821-1900) and his wife Ellen Hare (1829-1917) arrived with their children William George (born 1859) and Elizabeth (1862) both of whom were born in Ireland.
William George Armstrong (1859-1947) married Sarah Jane Alexander (1860-1901) and had three children Victor Earl, Mark Alexander (married Matilda Thompson) and William Thomas.
Elizabeth Armstrong married William Nixon and had 5 children: Eliza Ellen (1883), Annie (1885), Edmund (1889), Alexander (1891) and Telford Russell (1900).
Once in Huron County, William & Ellen had three more children:
John (1867) married Elizabeth Leishman
Eleanor (1871)
Mary (1877) married William Smith.

This is all I have been able to discover on the internet and I am looking to find out more about this family and their descendants.

Also, on Ancestry I discovered a list of deaths registered by doctors which listed William Armstrong's death on 29 November 1900. Is this all that was recorded at the time or where proper individual death certificates completed at the time as well by members of the family?

Antrim / Thomas and Agnes McVeigh of Belfast

I have recently made a bit of progress on one of my family lines that had previously been eluding me but it has led me to another brick wall.

Thomas McVeigh (1831-1900) was my 3xgreat grandfather and all I knew from his son William John's marriage certificate is that he was a labourer. For the last few years I have studied all Thomas McVeighs in Belfast area to see how many I could find at the time and I have concluded that only one Thomas had a son William John (1850-1911) and therefore that Thomas has to be my ancestor.

I have now found Thomas' burial in City Cemetery in 1900 and William John put a death notice in the Belfast Telegraph. He lived at 54 Joseph Street and this address has lead me to discover that Thomas also had a daughter Agnes who married James McAllister in 1888. James died 1901 and she died 1911.

Only today I have discovered that in the early 1880s Thomas lived further down the road at 37 Joseph Street, where his wife Agnes (1830-1880) and bachelor son Robert (1859-1886) died and from this house were both buried in public graves.

I am now trying to establish Agnes' surname and have come across two Thomas McVeighs who were married to Agnes/Nancy. As both my Thomas and Agnes were born about 1830, they couldn't have married before 1845 and therefore a marriage certificate should exist to get me a generation further back.

The first one I have found is Thomas McVey of Ballymena who married Agnes McVeigh in Ballymena 3rd Presbyterian Church in 1852. I have found three children for this couple: Nancy (1853), James (1856) and John (1859). I suspect this marriage isn't the right one as Agnes/Nancy's birth is nine years too early and a John was born the year that James (in my family) should have been. This remains a possibility however as perhaps there was a second Nancy born in 1862.

So then there is the other Thomas McVeigh who married Agnes/Nancy McAdorey (or McIldorey or McDory) and had four children in Glenarm - Rose (1864), Jane (1869), Male (1871), Hugh (1874). This could be the right family however I can't find a marriage certificate for this couple anywhere under any combination of surnames I have tried. For a couple still to be having children until 1874 there has to have been a marriage certificate completed as their marriage must have been after 1845. Are some Glenarm weddings missing from the General Registry Office? The information on this certificate and date of wedding would reveal if this is the right wedding or not and if these were my ancestors. Can anyone help?

Down / Ballymacbrennan, Lisnod & Mealough families - Black & Nesbitt

I have been doing some research on Hamilton Black & Eliza Jane Nesbitt, my 3xgreat grandparents and have found the following baptisms for Blacks and Nesbitts in the records at Drumbo Presbyterian Church. I would be interested in tracing these families to see if I can establish any links with my relations.

In the records Nesbitt was spelt 'Nisbit' but I have changed it here as that was only the spelling adopted by the Minister who kept the records.
