Caernarvonshire / Morris / Roberts - Llwyn Bugeilydd, Cricieth
« on: Tuesday 28 August 12 01:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Having discovered that my ancestor Ellis Morris (b. abt. 1798), wife Catherine (b. abt. 1801) and family of (at least) 10 children lived at Llwyn Bugeilydd, Cricieth for more than 100 years, I would be very interested to know if any RootsChatters have any information about the Morrises or in fact, Llwyn Bugeilydd itself.

I have found some interesting facts and stories about some of the Morrises, Llwyn Bugeilydd as well as finding some very confusing mistakes in many a census return which have taken me hours to get my head around!

I know that a number of the female members of the family, married into a branch of the Roberts family and I believe that the current owners of Llwyn Bugeilydd are Roberts too.  I can only guess that they may be decended from the same line.  It would be very interesting to know.

If anyone has any information at all, I would be eternally greatful!

Gyda diolch ymlaen llaw...

Cofion,

Arwel

Glamorganshire / Searching for living relatives in Treherbert area.
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 10:46 GMT (UK)  »
I realise this may be a long shot, but here goes!  Please bear with me, I will try to give you as much information as possible without (hopefully) boring you all, in the hope that some of the information may trigger someone's memory!

I'm hoping to find or to make contact with living relatives down in the Pontypridd area (if there are any!).  It may even be helpful if anyone remembers or may have heard about the family if only to add a little substance to parts of my family tree.  At the moment, all I have are names, dates and places.

My Great Grandfather John Ellis Jones was born in Dolwyddelan, North Wales and married (about 1890) an Ellen Roberts (born Ffestiniog).  They moved to Treherbert where my g Grandfather was a collier.  They had 4 children:

Jane E Jones (b abt 1893)
Ellis Wynne Jones (b abt 1894)
Edith Wynne Jones (b abt 1897)
Richard Gwaenydd Jones (b abt 1899 - died 1930 in Liverpool, buried in Ffestiniog with my Grandfather, his half-brother)

According the the census returns, all children were born in Meirionethshire but in 1901, the family moved to 92 Woodfield Terrace, Penrhiwceiber.  Between 1901 and 1911, the family had moved to The Old Royal Exchange Hotel, Penyrenglyn, Treherbert.  In 1909 Ellen, my g Grandfather's wife died of a broken neck following a fall down a staircase, in the Hotel, on Christmas Eve!

In 1911 my g Grandfather had moved to 87 Baglan Street, Treherbert with his children and also, my future g grandmother lived with him as a housekeeper, together with her two children from a previous marriage.  John Ellis and Elizabeth Anne (his housekeeper) later married and had a further (at least) 4 children together.

My Mother's sister remembers my Grandfather going down to Treherbert to his half-sister, Jane or Edith Wynne's funeral, but do not know when exactly.  My Grandfather died in April 1974, therefore it must have been before this!

I can only assume at the moment that Edith or Jane may have had children of their own and therefore, their children or even grandchildren could still be alive in that area now.  I know Ellis Wynne went on to marry and had children and that he and his brother, Richard Gwaenydd both died in the same year, 1930.

I am sorry if all the above may be a little confusing or even boring but I really would like to know more about that part of our family.

Thank you very much for your time.

In anticipation,

Arwel

Merionethshire / Waterloo Fish & Chip shop, Dolgellau
« on: Tuesday 30 August 11 23:49 BST (UK)  »
I've recently discovered that a member of my family (whom I've never met), used to own/run the Waterloo fish & chip shop in Dolgellau.  Having visited today, the shop is now closed and up for sale.  The owner could have been a 'Mary' and an Evans, Jones-Roberts or even O'Neill but at this time, I'm quite unsure of the facts...its a very long story!!

By all accounts, the same family ran the shop for around 60 years.

If anyone knows anything of the above, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you for your time.

Glamorganshire / Death in the Old Royal Exchange, Treherbert.
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 15:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, I wonder if anyone can help...?

I've recently discovered that my great grandfather (John Ellis Jones) and his first wife, Ellen were running a pub/hotel for a short period in the early 1900's in Treherbert.  This was The Old Royal Exchange.

I also discovered that Ellen tragically died at the age of 39 in the hotel. Her death certificate states that she died of a broken neck following a fall down a staircase in the Old Royal Exchange, on 24th Dec 1909.

John and Ellen had at least 4 children (Jane, Ellis Wynne, Edith Wynne and Richard Gwaenydd) and John Ellis later married his housekeeper, Elizabeth Ann, in about 1913 and they both had a further 4 children (including Glyndwr Morris, my grandfather).

I would love to find out if there are any living decedants of the above, still living in the area and would love to find out more about the Old Royal Exchange in Treherbert and especially while my ancestors were running it.
Many thanks for reading.

Merionethshire Lookup Requests / Hugh Pugh - born Dolgellau 1810
« on: Monday 13 June 11 15:00 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help??

I'm hoping to find siblings and parents names for Hugh Pugh born in 1810, in Dolgellau (according to all censuses).  I know he lived at Buarth Will, Arthog, with his wife, Margaret (nee Williams) from 1840 (and probably before this) until about 1881.  I believe he lived at Castell, Arthog until his death in 1898.

I would be delighted to find a record of his birth and any other relevant information.

Even to be pointed in the right direction would be wonderful!

Thanks.

Merionethshire / Evans - Felinfach, Llanegryn
« on: Monday 03 January 11 23:10 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on Evan Evans and wife Jane Evans (nee Evans) from Felinfach, Llanegryn please???

Their children were, William, Mary (my G Grandmother), Jonathan, John and Ann.

I know that Felinfach has since been demolished and to my knowledge, only one family lived at the address since my ancestors.

I've found the family on various census returns but I am maybe a little inexperienced to figure out who Evan's parents were as some dates on some sensus returns do not match.  He was born roughly about 1836 in Llanegryn.

I remember my Grandmother telling me that Evan and his wife Jane's grave does not have a headstone, which doesn't help!  They are buried in Llanegryn churchyard and my Grandmother told me they were buried at the foot of a large tree near the entrance of the church... I have visited the churchyard but no luck!

Does anyone have any idea where I should start looking for a record of their grave, even though it does not have a headstone???

Any help on the above family would be greatly received.

Many thanks.

Hoping to come across any living relatives of my gr. gr. gr. granfather, Hugh Pugh (born 1811 Dolgellau-died 1898 Arthog) who married and settled in Buarth Will, Arthog with his wife Margaret.

If he was born in Dolgellau, I'm sure he must have had brothers and sisters and I guess there's a good chance that some of their decendants are still alive.

Or...does anybody have any idea how I would go about finding more about Hugh Pugh and his siblings/parents prior to 1837...?

Thank you for your time

Merionethshire / Elizabeth (Leusa King) - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 23:50 BST (UK)  »
Searching for any information about Elizabeth (Leusa King), my grandfather's mother.  The attached picture is of her.  She had only one leg and quite possible that she may have had a wooden leg.

I know that she once lived in Dolrhedyn and also 111 Manod Road.  Her husband, John Ellis Jones was born in Treherbert by all accounts, but unsure if Elizabeth came with him or was she born in Ffestiniog...?

Her husband had died by the time my grandfather (Glyndwr Morris Jones) was married on 5th Oct 1935.  I cannot find any reference to them in any census, am unsure of dates of births as yet and also unsure where they are buried!

As I await for family members to come back to me with some info, I thought I would try here...just in case!

Thanks all!
