Oxfordshire / Chaundys Place Oxford
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Hoping someone may be able to help here. Im looking for any photographs that include 7 Chaundys Place Oxford.

It was a lane off Paradise Square during the 1960s when it made way for the Westgate Shopping Centre. Ive had a look at the Heritage Oxford site but there is only 1 image that shows the road in to the place itself

Reason for asking.. I was born there. Number 7, front bedroom first floor (they had 3 floors)

Hope someone can help

Kind regards
Cliff

Hi Rootchatters

A friend of mine has asked me to recover a water-damaged photograph, but on removing it from an elaborate mount I found the studio name embossed on the surround. Ive tried to clarify the best I could and this version (dull paper brown mount inverted in PS) is the best I can do for now. I tried to reshoot with my macro lens but it didnt improve

May be G Johnson - Bedford?

Many thanks for any help

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Postcard for dating please
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters

Ive seen posts before that say the divider on a postcard was introduced in 1902. This one has no divider, also it is a scene that has a similar typefont to many others. This one is Sibford Ferris Hill 2. Would anyone know the source of this one, Im looking for confirmation of the pre-1902 theory and if anyone may know of the publisher

The man in the scene may be my friend Jake's Great grandather. Jake is 73 now and remains convinced. Both  back and front are shown

Many thanks again!

Hi Rootschatters

Hope you can help. Im not looking for a tidy up but just a rough date for this picture of my friend David's grandfather - apologies I dont have his name but they lived in North London all their lives

It is a studio shot but the image itself is no longer in its original studio slip so there are no clues there Im afraid!

Thanks in advance!

Surrey / Surrey County Gaol/Horsemonger Lane Gaol
« on: Thursday 07 April 22 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Struggling to find records of prisoner commitment/release from Surrey County Gaol. I (may) have a relative, David Winfield, who appears in the 1851 census in gaol but cant find when/why he was admitted nor any release records

Have tried usual online routes, Ancestry, FindMyPast, Surrey History Centre but no trace

Would any of you kind folk know where else I could check? Im in the Midlands so a visit to Surrey will be a last resort

Thanks

World War Two / RAF Motorbike markings
« on: Friday 04 June 21 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello good people

If this is a duplicate please ignore but my post from earlier hasnt appeared

My aunt has set me a challenging task. Her uncle John Ronald b. 1909 in Glasgow served in the RAF in WW2 and she has no other details but would like to see what other records could be found. She only has 2 pictures, one a studio shot and the other (attached) which has him in a warm theatre of war given the uniform, on a bike

The bike has markings and I wondered if this could lead to a clue. I have seen that the C could denote Coastal Command but the rest is a mystery

The markings are C 7059 (zero is smudged) and underneath V (or Y?) .09

Cant see a cap badge nor rank insignia

Just looking if the bike insignia could lead to a squadron or any other strand of a clue

Thanks!

Armed Forces / Indian Army Ordnance Corps - house clearance find
« on: Saturday 17 October 20 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello good people

My son-in-law has just completed a house clearance and turned up items from the Indian Army Ordnance Corps. After Googling images, the cap badges seem to be that of an officer and the design is that of the regiment between 1922 and 1947

In amongst the items is another that bears a name. Is there a way of finding officers of IAOC between those two dates?

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Couple of queries - Artillery ranks and Gazette dates
« on: Monday 17 December 18 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all and a happy festive season to you all

Only recently did I find my great-uncle was awarded the Military Medal in WW1 and I have started to search for the citation

Ive found the Gazette entry (7653) for him, 291388 Corporal FES Kinch 128 Heavy Battery (Oxford) but my queries are

In the artillery I thought the rank was a Bombardier rather than a Corporal
The Gazette date is 17 June 1919, although I dont have any details as to what action took place to merit the award I suspect it is much earlier as he ended the war as an acting sergeant

Any clues to either?

Many thanks in advance
