Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA test vs the Paper Trail.
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 05:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
I hope that someone may be able to shed a little light on my DNA results. I have worked on my family tree for more than a decade now, and have found nothing outside of the United Kingdom as far as the paper trail goes.
Though, My DNA results through Ancestry tell me that I have 50 % European West DNA. I then had my mother tested, who returned a result of 70% European West in her own DNA. I have traced back as far as the early 1700's and even beyond on my mother's line ,with nothing to suggest we have any connection with Europe.
I know very little in understanding the DNA tests in depth, but was hoping someone may be able to help me understand, why I would have such strong DNA results with nothing appearing on the paper trail?

Any help would be so greatly appreciated,
Thanks, Bek

Thanks so much in Advance, Bek

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry.com dna results
« on: Tuesday 25 October 16 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Im hoping there are a few people on here who know a little more about the dna testing than myself and are able to help.

I just got my results back, 50% European  West, 31% Irish 12%Great Britain - (with a small percentage of 4 other traces).
Now all my research so far, going back on some lines into the 1500's, i have English  ancestors right through, with the odd irish/welsh/Scotsman. I'm saying about 90% English so far on my tree.

The results have definitely thrown me, as there are certainly no links to abroad... i might add too my dads side are all quite darker skinned /toned and certainly not typically -british' looking. I myself am very very olive with dark features.i was hoping dna may have given a clue to that...

Is it just that the European West is so far back i wont discover it? Or with it being such a great number  (50%!) Is it likely there is something i have missed closer home?
I would love anyones thoughts :)

Occupation Interests / Military Ornament Maker
« on: Friday 16 September 16 11:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I have been researching one of my ancestors, (who lived in Walsall, Staffordhsire) that in 1861 and 1871 recorded his occupation as a Military Ornament Maker. I have tried endlessly to find information on this particular occupation, and drawing a blank.
Id really love to learn some more about it, so was hoping perhaps someone on here may know a little bit about it. I would be grateful for any insight :)

Hi everyone,

I have spent quite a few years now going back and forth hoping to finding this marriage record using various sources. I know there does come a point in family lines where it does become a dead end via internet researching, but this particular couple I would really like to find an answer to (if there is one out there!).

Elizabeth Froggatt (born 1734, Alrewas) and George Gough (birth abt 1720) presumably would have married circa 1752 when their only son , William, was born (Alrewas 1752).
I was lucky enough to find a copy of George's will, which always refers to his wife as 'reputed' and William as his 'reputed' son  ???

I have yet to even find a marriage through countless searches that may hint at being theirs.
I have widened my search outside of Staffordshire and even England Also, with no luck.
George's birth was recorded as 'about 1720' on his will, so I have no definate birth or birthplace for him that may indicate another area to look closer at either.

I've come to realise this one may just remain a mystery, but if anyone out there by chance find anything for this couple, I would really appreciate it  :)

Shropshire / Jane WILLIAMS or HEATH? Marriage to James Lowe
« on: Friday 03 June 16 08:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have a little bit of a puzzle regarding my ancestor Jane WILLIAMS/HEATH that i hope to try and clear up.

On her daughters birth certificate (Jane LOWE (jnr) 1841, Lilleshall SHROPSHIRE) her parents are stated as James LOWE and Jane Lowe formerly WILLIAMS.

I have managed to locate a marriage for a James Lowe, but to a Jane HEATH in WELLINGTON Shropshire in 1827, The eldest daughter was born in 1827 (Baptised in St.George Shrewsbury Shropshire) So the dates/place do seem to add up, and is the only marriage I can find for a James Lowe and Jane.
I thought perhaps she was married previously, and have used the Williams and Heath Surnames to try and see if that was the case also, but with no luck.

I also searched for a Jane Heath, in Birth Records (She records her year of birth as 1804, 1806 and 1808  and different places of birth also : Muxton, Lilleshall and Wrockwardine Wood - Shropshire) and have found no one to match her there either. Though there are multiple Jane Williams in Shropshire.

I hope this makes sense - its all a bit puzzling! The whole family in general over 3 generations have been a little hard to put together for various reasons and seem to be a little evasive...
I thought perhaps a fresh set of eyes may be able to help - as Ive been working on this part of the family for quite some time.

Thank you in advance :)

Staffordshire / Help finding Elizabeth Badkin
« on: Monday 23 May 16 13:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Ive come to quite a dead end with one of my ancestors, Mrs Elizabeth Badkin (circa 1770)
Ive found a marriage record for her to Thomas Burton in 1792 in Burton Under Needwood, Staffordshire but can not find anything even remotely similar to her name for a birth/christening record... I've tried exhausting all possibilities with ancestry.com and the family search .org website with no luck. Usually I'd get a 'hit' with at least similarities, but no such luck with even that which has me puzzled ???
Any thoughts or tips for other angles to try would be greatly appreciated, Thanks :)

Hi Everyone , Ive become a little stumped on following a particular line, and was hoping for some thoughts from others. (My apologies in advance for the info overload!)

My x 4 Great Grandfather was Jonathan Bell born 1834 Kirkby Stephen Westmorland, England- later living in Durham. (Census Records have stated Westmorland and Durham as place of birth, and resided in Durham in later years)

I have a christening record, dating 1834 and parents as Jonathan and Ann Bell, in Kirkby Stephens, then also a marriage record for Jonathan and Ann Moss in Kirkby Stephens.

Now, the only 1851 Census I can find remotely similar (I have all up until 1861 where he is married and living with his wife) Has a Jonathan Bell, living with parents Jonathan and Ann. It states his birth in Durham, it is the only one I can find where the dates and parents names fit.
If I was to follow this line, it has his father Jonathan, Born in 1800, Workington,Cumberland, to this I can find further records on his christening info.
Though, if I were to try and match it up via parish records, I also find a Jonathan Bell born in Westmorland 1800.

I'm more inclined to go with the Kirkby Stephens Westmorland line, but the families did move around a bit in and around Cumberland and Westmorland... So Im not sure which would seem the most accurate. Also perhaps someone may have better luck finding a Jonathan Bell b 1834 Westmorland in the 1851 census?

Any Help or opinions would be greatly appreciated, I hope that the info has made sense, TIA :)

World War One / SOLDIER Frederick Henry Farnell Salonika 1918
« on: Monday 20 May 13 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out a little more information on my Great Grandfather who was a Soldier in WW1.
His name is Frederick henry Gough, b 1889 Staffordshire.
I've have searched endlessly for military records, but have had no luck and I fear his service records were one of millions burnt.
I do however know that he served in Salonika, Greece, at least in 1918 thanks to a Newspaper article I found.
Does anyone know anything in regards to the British Army that were there at this time (Staffordshire regiments?) Or perhaps somewhere I could find out more information?

Many thanks in advance :)

World War One / Help on soldier Frederick Henry Gough Salonika 1918
« on: Monday 20 May 13 01:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to find out a little further information on my Great Grandfather Frederick Henry Gough, (born 1889 in Staffordshire) who served in WW1
There are no records I can specifically find for his service, I do however know (thanks to a newspaper article) that he was a serving soldier in 1918 in Salonika. Does anyone know much about the British troops in Salonika around this time? It seems he has no service records that I can find on ancesty.com
Is there anywhere else possible I may be able to search online for more specific records?

Many thanks to any help in advance :)
