The Common Room / Help finding will / probate please
« on: Tuesday 03 November 20 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you in advance for any expertise, wisdom or advice that can be given.
I usually don't have a problem finding a will or probate but I have come up short with this one.
I am looking for the will or probate of Ann Carol Harris but cannot find it.  Ann died April 7th 2003 in Neath, South Wales.  She was born in November 1946 in Denbigh, North Wales (maiden name Eustace).
I have used: probatesearch.service.gov.uk which I usually use but have not had any success.
My understanding was that even if there wasn't a will, there would be a record of the grant of probate?

Thank you again for any help that can be given.

The Common Room / Help finding newspaper article from handwritten note order of service.
« on: Wednesday 28 October 20 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon and thank you for any help that can be given.  i have attached an extract from my maternal grandmother's (My mum's mum)order of service which mentions a family story about how good a singer my Nan was and the opportunities she was unable to take.

It is also seems to imply that the original article can be found in the February 1937 Daily Mirror but despite many hours and days of searching I keep drawing a blank.

I would be grateful if there is a miracle worker out there who is able to find this original newspaper article please?

Many thanks,

Nic

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Hull street names from 1897 marriage certificate
« on: Saturday 22 February 20 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for any help that can be given.
I have attached an extract from an 1897 marriage certificate at Holy Trinity, Hull, however, I cannot work out the residence names.

FindMyPast transcriptions are:
1. 3 Prist Street
2. 85 Barnes Cole Street
If these transcriptions are correct I have struggled to find them on maps new or old.  I would be grateful for second opinions please or links to the transcribed names on a map.

Many thanks,

Nic

Northumberland / Looking for Robert Patterson's (m. 1813 Newcastle) birth and parents
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

My 4xGreat Grandfather is Robert Patterson who married Eleanor Dunn at All Saints, Newcastle on 22 March 1813.

One of their children that I know of was William (1814-1882 my 3xG grandfather).  I have explored parts of this section of my family before on rootschat (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=790785.0) and am very grateful for all the help that I got.

My problem now is finding Robert's parents.  Usually I would find the father's name from the parish marriage and work backwards from that to match up the names in a baptism.  Despite their being several transcriptions of the marriage online, none of them give the father's name or Robert's age.  I have found two Roberts baptised in Newcastle between 1785 and 1795 but without a connection to a father's name or a birth date range I can't see how I can make sure that I have the right person (or even if he was born in Newcastle.  Maybe he was born across the border?).

Any help in tracking and confirming Robert's birth date and his parents would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Good afternoon and thank you for any help that can be given.

My second great grand uncle was John Henry White (1871-1940).  On Ancestry in the "UK, Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1848-1939" I have found his service record (service number 159778) and have attempted to transcribe it.  I have attached the original (Class: ADM 188; Piece: 234) and also my attempted transcription.  If possible, I would like help with what his rating was please and also what the comment was when he was discharged from Pembroke II?

Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupations - 1851 census
« on: Thursday 26 December 19 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

I have attached two occupations for John and Sarah Badley from the 1851 census (Class: HO107; Piece: 2028; Folio: 192; Page 8)

To me they look like Farrier labourer and Nail forger but I would be grateful of an second opinion please.  Their three eldest children also have the same occupation as Sarah.

Thank you,

Nic

Devon / Anyone live near Littleham, Exmouth (St Margaret's & St Andrew's)
« on: Tuesday 10 December 19 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
I know that this may be a long shot, however, is there a kind soul that lives near the church (Littleham, Exmouth (St Margaret's & St Andrew's)) that would be able to take a picture of the gravestone for my ggg grand uncle Ambrose White who worked for the Coast Guard for many years please?  He died 16/04/1920.  His death and burial were mentioned in several contemporary newspapers so I was wondering if the gravestone gave any additional information or family details.

If you are that kind soul - thank you!

Devon / Trying to locate "Brixton Terrace", Exmouth
« on: Friday 22 November 19 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

On an ancestor's will (Ambrose White d. 16/04/1920) he is shown as living in a house called "Trevone" on Brixton Terrace, Exmouth.

Looking at a 1902 Kelly's directory seems to show that Brixton Terrace was off Exeter Road, however, looking at old maps, I have not been able to find Brixton Terrace.  This is confirmed by the 1911 census entry for Ambrose.

I would be grateful if someone could tell me where Brixton Terrace is or what happened to it please.

Thank you,

Nic

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation from 1871 census
« on: Monday 21 October 19 12:05 BST (UK)  »
Thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

In the attached extract for Joseph Sinclair from the 1871 census for Poplar (RG10/587/64/9) I believe that the first word is "Press" giving "press man in an oil mill" as the occupation.  I would be grateful for a second opinion in case I am wrong.

Thank you,

Nic
