Derry (Londonderry) / Boom Hall / Boomhall information
« on: Wednesday 02 June 21 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know if there are records online or held locally which would have information about workers at the Boom Hall Estate in Londonderry in the mid 1800's ?

In the 1901 census my Great Grandfather John Dogherty (45) states he was born in 'Boom Hall'. I know the dates cant be relied on as being totally accurate, but I'm guessing John was born circa 1856.

In Johns marriage record from 1879 his father is named as Richard Dogherty.

I've recently found a marriage record for Richard Dogherty (widow)- who could potentially be my GG Grandfather- who states his residence is 'Boom Hall' at the time of his 2nd marriage in 1865.
His occupation is 'labourer', which is why I'm interested to finding out if there's any additional information available anywhere for workers at Boom Hall.

Dublin / Geraldine House.Geraldine Street.Merrion Hall ???
« on: Wednesday 19 October 16 12:07 BST (UK)  »
I've just found the marriage record for one of my ancestors  ;D and am surprised to see that the marriage took place in Dublin.
The address listed at the time of marriage looks like it is Geraldine House,Geraldine Street and the marriage looks like it was solemised at Merrion Hall Dublin.
I've tried to google these things a bit but only seeing houses currently for sale in the area ::)
If anyone knows anything interesting about 'Geraldine House' I'd love to know more.
Many thanks.

Australia / BARCLAY - John,Jim,Nat&Bob-from Adavoyle,Ireland
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 20:16 BST (UK)  »
In the 1901 Irish census they were aged 19,8,6 &4 years old respectively.

In the 1911 Irish census John & Jim do not appear,so it's reasonable to assume that in 1911, aged 29 and 18, they may well already have been in Australia. Are there any Australian records online that I should check for further information or clarification in or around these dates ?

I believe Nat ( Nathaniel) followed his brothers to Australia in 1914.

Bob's full name was Robert William Barclay - born 1897 (+ or - 1 year)
John Barclay was born in October 1881
Jim's full name was James Samuel Barclay - born 1893 (+ or - 1 year)

Derry (Londonderry) / Castledawson C of I Ballyscullion Magherafelt
« on: Monday 06 June 11 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know the correct location to start looking for records for
Castledawson Church of Ireland Ballyscullion Magherafelt where my great grandparents were married in 1879

John Doherty{Dogherty/Dougherty} (born C 1855/56 from Boom Hall Londonderry)
Married
Margaret Lamont (born C1855/56 from Magherafelt)
on 12th November 1879

I was planning to visit the area in the next few weeks ( I live in Belfast) to see if I could unearth some more information locally, but I've been told that the church name is a bit confusing  because the name Ballyscullion is linked with Castledawson and they are actually two separate parishes.
I have been given the email address for a local person who might be able to help, but thought I'd also check here in case anyone can help.
Many thanks.

Derry (Londonderry) / can anyone decipher info in this census
« on: Monday 23 August 10 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone make out, decipher or guess what any of the writing in the 'Where born' area of the following 1901 census says ??

From the 1911 census I can see that John Dogherty ( we've always spelt the family name Doherty ?!? :o)  was born in Co. Londonderry, and  there might be some reference to Magherafelt, but apart from that I'm at a loss....

Hello..I'm a newbie(and from Belfast)

I'm just saying hello for now 'cos I've just found this forum, and you seem like a friendly/helpful bunch. I haven't read too many posts yet, but once I've familiarised myself with the forum etc, no doubt I'll be back again with lots more questions.

I'm researching my dad's side of the family - BARCLAY from Meigh aka Killeavy in Forkhill.

My grand mother and grand father,(Thomas and Edith Barclay)my great grand mother and great grand father (Jonathan and Alice/Alecia Barclay) and my great great grandmother (Elizabeth Barclay) are all buried in the (part ruined) Church of Ireland in Meigh

I think I must have some distant relations still living in the area who are descendants of my great aunt Elizabeth (Betty) Anne Barclay who married  Hugh (?) Campbell,so if any of their family happen to read I'd love to hear from you.

I'm also keen to contact Chris H_ who was looking into the family tree a few years back because his Grand mother Hazel is my great aunt.

I'm really interested to hear any suggestions you might have about family tree research because it is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I've found great stuff on the 1901/1911 census,I've been to the PRONI...but think I was way to premature visiting ...there is just so much info and I need to be a bit more focused before I go back again.I've also left a telephone message with a minister who should be able to give me a better understanding of what the saying ''in local custody'' actually means.

If you've read this far...Thank you  ;D     and if you think you might be related I'd love to hear from you.
