Ross & Cromarty / Rop shire - Ross shire
« on: Wednesday 07 July 10 11:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Very new to this forum, but quietly been exploring the family lines with varying degrees of success.
I am struggling a bit on my Great great grandfather in Scotland.
His name was Alexander Cameron. On my Great grandfathers birth register (Alexander Murdoch Cameron b13/3/1881 Ararat, Vic Aust) his birth place is listed as Rop shire Scotland with age of 35.
This I believe may be an incorrect spelling due to a thick accent being mis understood by the register. I have yeaterday sighted the marrige certificate and it is listed as Ross shire on that.
35 years old in 1881 would make his birth year 1845-46.
Q. Is Ross shire Ross and Cromarty?

From elderly relatives in Australia I have verbal information on Alexander and his parents but have been unable to find a link to anything I can prove back into scotland.
have his wife back 2 generations into scotland no problems.
Verbal information that I have is
Alexanders(b, 1845-46 in Ross shire) father is Alexander Cameron. His wife was an Anabelle Mckenzie or Mcintosh. He was a shepherd.
Alexanders(b, 1845-46 in Ross shire)  other siblings were Scott and Anabella.
The information in the 2 paragraphs above is only verbal testamony from some very old relatives in Australia and I am starting to doubt the validity of it as i have not been able to confirm anything from census records. Although it is possible that they were born between censuses and emigrated between as well.
Anybody got some pointers to help me.
Regards
Stuart

Family History Beginners Board / 1861 Scotland census
« on: Wednesday 07 July 10 03:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I am very new to this forum and as such am feeling my way.
I have slowly been making my way back through the family history and been graetkly aided by some very helpful older relations - absolutly kicking myself that I didnt do the interviews I have done recently when i was young. I reckon I have missed some priceless information - People like the great grandmother was almost 103 when she passed -what went with her?
However on to the subject. Is there anywhere that I can search the 1861 census for scotland?- I think I have found my Great great grandmother here at the age of 10 in inverness shire. If it is then it should confirm her parents and any siblings and allow me to change some stuff from pencil to ink.
Her details are Jessie McKinnon b. we think 1 August 1851 in Inverness shire. her Parents we think are Marion Mcintosh & Lachlan McKinnon, both born in Isle of Skye - Inverness shire. Him we think in 1821, and her in 1826, but no documentation just a tombstone in Australia.
Any thoughts anybody.
Regards
Stuart
