Midlothian / Meaning of entry in Edinburgh register of Marriages
« on: Tuesday 26 April 22 20:20 BST (UK)  »

Hello

The marriage I am trying to discover more about is between Robert Manson (could be Morison) and Marion Meldrum - the marriage is on scotlandspeople which is where the surname Manson/Morison is recorded, I attached this record..

I discovered the following entry, can anyone explain what or where "Martine [lege Merton]" is, Martine is written on the Parish reg but I am unable to read the next word

.The register of marriages for the parish of Edinburgh, 1595-1700, Part 2
..." Robert, writer , Marion Meldrum, d. of late Mr. Andrew M , late minister at Martine [lege Merton],... (Edinburgh, Midlothian, Lothian, United Kingdom - 1704)

Thanks in anticipation

Hello,

I am researching my husbands Macdonald line and I have managed with confirmed evidence to get back to Hugh Macdonald c1700 through sasines and kirk sessions.

We have a confirmed marriage for Hugh to a Christian Kirk in Dornoch in 1738, previous to living in Dornoch Hugh is recorded as being a writer in Edinburgh (evidence gained from Kirk sessions). He had a daughter Margaret we estimate to have been born around 1730 prior to his marriage to Christian (they went on to have daughters Lilias 1739 and Isobel 1741.)

I have discovered two marriage entries for a Hugh Macdonald in two different Parishes of Edinburgh at the same time, one is quite legible, the other is not, can anyone help me to decipher these, I am thinking that the couple attended two different churches as I have seen banns placed in two different churches but not marriages.

The female is recorded as Ann(e) Morrisson, however this surname has different spelling as does Hugh Macdonald... Help and thoughts on this couple would be very much appreciated.

Regards Patricia

We have an old family album which has a group of photographs at the back which we are sure are not family but obviously close friends.. I decided to do a little research on the family group.

First photo is of a charming little boy, on the reverse of the photo is written “to Auntie Nan from Willie Nicholls with much love. Iquique March 12th '94” photo taken by G Tumini, Iquique.

Second and third photos are of a woman and a man, both these photos were taken in Iquique by L Boudatry Cia, Iquique. It could say L Boudat y Ca.   On the reverse of the woman's photo it says “To Nan, from her loving friend Nellie, June 1989, Iquique.”  Nan was my husband Ians great great Aunt, Mary Ann Valentine 1863 – 1950

On doing research on Ancestry I discovered some Attestation papers which I am hoping are for Willie – William James Nicholls, I also found a notice of the birth of a William James Mayne Nicholls born 9th September 1892 in Iquique Chile. Parents Carlos (Charles) Wesley Nicholls and Elena Luisa Taylor. I have also discovered other travel documents for 'Willie' each one gives his 'race' and 'spoken language' as English.

Nan didn't marry but corresponded with a large number of people she was an avid postcard collector of which we have numerous and she was educated in private schools and colleges so we believe that Nellie (or Elena) was an old school friend.

I would love to discover more of Willie and if he has family I am sure they would love copies of these photographs.

Ayrshire / Mount Hamilton House, St Quivox Ayrshire - Photo please
« on: Saturday 15 May 21 13:41 BST (UK)  »

The Ligertwood family lived at Mount Hamilton House in St Quivox from 1865/66 to 1908, Alexander Ligertwood was factor for the Auchincruive Estate. I have discovered a Brief History of the house by C. McKellar. This House has now been demolished.

Two of the Ligertwood daughters, Louisa Petrie and Jessie Ann married two Valentine Brothers, Alexander and John, and as such I am researching the family.

I can find numerous photographs of the House in its sad state of disrepair but would like to see the house in its prime. I have tried to find a picture but to no avail, Can anyone find one for me please.

The Common Room / Breymann's Institute, Wolfenbuttel, Braunschweig.
« on: Thursday 06 May 21 15:18 BST (UK)  »

Hello,
I have inherited a large amount of postcards dating from late 1890's to 1907, these were addressed to either Mary Valentine of Millbank house Girvan or to her sister Rose. These are family members
..A few of these cards are addressed to Rose at the Breymann's Institute dated between 31st Dec 1898 and 26th July 99.

Rose was a doctors daughter born in Girvan in 1879, she didn't marry and never was employed. I would like to know if possible what Rose was studying at the institute.

Rose attended Girvan Burgh School and the Ayr Academy then went on to be a boarder at the Wynthrop College Ashton upon Mersey, she also attended Glasgow School of Art 1911-1912.

Rose was gifted artistically and I wondered if the Breymann Institute was connected to Art.

Thanks in anticipation

Hello again,

In the box of photographs recently discovered is this gentleman, If we could date this then we may have a more accurate idea as to which family member he is. The photograph had been placed beneath another in an album so condition is a bit poor.

One of our contenders was born on 1808 and died in 1851 so this would have to be an early photograph if he is to be considered.

Thanks in anticipation Patricia x
