The 1861 census lists William and Mary Ann Hopkins as living at 13 Buckingham Square, but I can't work out where this is! I've checked old maps from the era and still can't find it, does anyone know where this is?

The Common Room / Penal question
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 18:58 BST (UK)  »
In 1866 one of my relatives was given a ten year penal servitude sentence. Does this mean his was bounced off to Oz or could he have done his time in the Uk? How do I find out where he served his time?

Lancashire / Sarah Wignall (nee Fawcett)
« on: Wednesday 01 September 10 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about her?

She was born around 1815, she married John Wignall in Preston in 1836, gave birth to Samuel in 1838 and promptly vanishes!
John remarries in 1840 and Samuel is on the census still living with him in 1841, so I think we can assume Sarah died, but I'm struggling to find where and when etc. I have found a listing for a Sarah Wignall d. Jan-Mar 1840 in Chorley, but I can't find out anything more. I've even squinted my way through newspaper archives, and can only find the marriage.

If anyone knows anything, please let me know, Thanks!

Lancashire / Why was he born in France? (Wignall)
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 19:31 BST (UK)  »
Having some difficulty with a John Wignall!

Ok, he was born in France around 1816, to Samuel Wignall and Mary (nee Heaton), but all other ties including wedding and census' findings are based in Lancashire. He was married to Charlotte Stafford in Standish and they lived in Chorley. His father was born in Poulton le Fylde and his mother in Preston, where they also married.

So....why was he born in France? Looking at the date I wondered if it had anything to do with the Nepolianic war, which ended around then. I doubt they would have been on holiday!

Does anyone know anything, or anyway of me finding out a bit more about who served in the war etc? I've tried many sites and can't find anything  ???

Hi all!
I'm looking for a Charles Graham, born c. 16 Feb 1822 in Dumfrieshire.
He moved to Wigan and married Elizabeth Wilson from Chorley and around 1876 married Janet McMinn from Kirkcudbrighshire, but they lived in Wigan.

Other Countries / India Help
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find anything! I've looked on Fibis, census records, family search etc etc and can find so little about the India(n) side of the family, even my Grandmother doesn't appear to exist!

What I know so far is...

Alick Ennis married (a woman) in India, we think she is a native Indian lady. In 1888 they had a daughter May Lena Ennis. Jan 14th 1914 saw her married to Alfred H Graham (who I'm not having problems with) and in the March of 1914/15 they had their only child Ellen Barbara Graham. On 15 sept 1937 in Cawnpore, India she married Thomas Santus. They had a daughter Francis around 1938, and in 1939 they moved to England. There aren't many problems once they get to the Uk.

We know that the family lived in Cawnpore and Allahabad, and my Grandmother (ellen) went to school in Shimla at the Lawrence school. The cousins of the family were the Connolly's who were gentlemans tailors in Allahabad/Cawnpore

I welcome any help, hints, tips etc as I'm starting to go a bit crackers :P
Thanks all

PS: I'm indrawignall1 on ancestry.com, just in case that comes up in searches

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Baptism look-up
« on: Saturday 07 August 10 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Would someone be able to look up my great grandmother for me? I'm looking for parents names as I'm getting in a confused knot with several people with the same/similar names. I think the father is George Frost and the mother is Sarah Ann Crain or Brown or some other surname that hasn't appeared yet :P
Thank you :D

The Common Room / Is it possible...
« on: Friday 30 July 10 14:09 BST (UK)  »
to appear twice on the census? I assume that technically it is, as they used to take years to complete and so if you moved during that time maybe you could be counted twice?
