The Common Room / Illegitimacy, father's name on birth certificate
« on: Monday 18 February 13 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1930s if the father's name is given on the birth certificate of an illegitimate child, would he have had to be present at the registration or given his written consent?

Warwickshire / Where did Peter Metcalf disappear to in census records?
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 11:53 GMT (UK)  »
Where did Peter Metcalf disappear to?  The only census I’ve found him is 1851.
Apprentice to Coach Maker, Evesham (HO107 piece 2044 folio 79 page 36).

He was born 1831 Leamington Priors. He married Jane Lewis (b. 1833 Wootton Wawen) 23rd December 1855 St. Martins Birmingham.
They had five children
1)   Lizzie 1857 Oakham, Staffs.
2)   William Frederick 1858 Oakham.
3)   Walter 1859 Henley in Arden, d. 1920 Leek, Staffs.
4)   Emily 15th January 1870, Carlisle St., Birmingham. Birth certificate states her father as   Samuel Derry, mother Jane Metcalf.  The birth is registered under Derry and Metcalf.
5)   Edwin 10th Feb 1872, back of 22 Kent St. Birmingham.  Birth certificate shows father as Peter Metcalf, occupation Black Smith, mother Jane Metcalf formerly Lewis).

1861 children were staying with relatives.
Lizzey was in Alcester with her uncle and aunt George and Ann Lewis.
Frederick was with his grandmother Mary Lewis in Wootton Wawen.
Walter was a Nurse Child in the house of Matilda Lowe (36) Widow, Henley in Arden.

Where were Peter and Jane in 1861?  Perhaps Jane was ill after the birth of Walter?
1871 Jane, Lizzie, Walter and Emily were living in Birmingham. Jane's occupation, Book sewer and folder.  She’s noted as married where was Peter? RG10 piece 3130 folio 85 page 8.

Haven’t found a death for Peter Metcalf, however in 1876 Jane Metcalf married Charles Coleman in West Brom.

1881 Jane’s  occupation Stationery folder similar/same as in 1871.  The family were living 7, Trentham Place, Cattell Road, Aston.  Emily and Edwin are noted as daughter and son of Charles Coleman (RG11 piece 3023 folio 99 page 5).
Emily married under the name Metcalf and in later census Edwin’s surname is Metcalf.

By 1891 Jane was a widow, occupation Stationery Folder. There’s a death registration for a Jane Coleman, 1897 Kings Norton. Another possibility Jane Metcalf 1898 Birmingham.

Any help in solving the disappearence of Peter Metcalf much appreciated

Australia / When did Phyllis Mary LEWIS arrive in Australia?
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 23:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Phyllis Mary Lewis was born 1914 Broom, Bidford on Avon Warwickshire, daughter of Arthur Lewis and Florence May Busby. Married Alexander Gunning in Australia when she was 18.  Her death registration 1975, states she had been in the country 61 years, which would mean she left the UK as a baby.

I haven't found her on passenger lists leaving the UK.  Can she be found in any arrival lists?

Canada Lookup Request / Tapping family emigrated from Belfast 1929/30
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My first venture to the Canadian board  :)

Cora Kathleen Tapping was born 1898 in Wellingore, Lincolnshire, England, she married Henry McGilton in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland.  They and their young son, born 1923, emigrated to Montreal in 1929. Cora's brother Lawrence Tapping with his wife Eileen, also emigrated in 1929.  Their father and mother Edward Thomas Tapping and Zada Mary (nee Ingham) followed in 1930.

Edward Tapping died 1936 Toronto.

Is there anyway of following this family forward using online sources?

Completed Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / King Burials Oundle - Completed thank you
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out the names of three children of Joseph King, a nonconformist minister. He was buried in Oundle churchyard in 1720, three of his children were also buried there, one in 1712 and two in 1714.  The burials aren't recorded in Alan Clarke's transcripts.

Any help with names appreciated

FH Documents and Artefacts / Can this moustache comb be dated from the marks?
« on: Saturday 17 April 10 16:13 BST (UK)  »
I believe this to be a moustache comb.  Not sure what metal the comb is (silver gilt?)  the case is bone (or is it ivory  :-\)

I have looked in a book of silver marks but haven't found these, any ideas?
