The Common Room / German emigres to USA.
« on: Thursday 08 February 24 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Chatters.
I have followed the document trail concerning the brother of a direct ancestor who left Baden, (Germany) with his bride, and sailed from Le Havre, (France) landing in New York, (USA) in June 1852.

Many of the other passengers were also German.
I am musing on the WHY: what conditions might have precipitated this migration?
Economic, Religious, or Warfare spring to mind.....??

Also, HOW might the travellers have reached Le Havre from South Western Germany?
I guess they may reached the coast from Paris by boat along the Seine.... But how might they have reached that point?

Does anyone have any relevant knowledge regarding emigration from Germany in mid 19th century?  All in put gratefully received.

Many thanks all.

Glamorganshire / Bridgend General Hospital birth in 1947
« on: Thursday 11 January 24 09:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Chatters.

Trying to help a bit with an acquaintance who was adopted, and would like to learn something about the circumstances surrounding her birth in 1947. (Pre NHS)

She says she "was born at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend", and I am aware that the old Bridgend General Hospital was renamed in 1988.

I have discovered that records; 1836-1952 from the BGH, are lodged at the Glamorgan RO. And she will probaly contact them direct.

My question Chatters..... How likely was it for Welsh births in 1947 to be at a hospital?
In England, I think, most births pre NHS were at home.

Any thoughts will be much appreciated.

DIARY: Christmas Day to New Year’s Eve.
Having woken early, and nothing else to do, I might as well start the new week. I guess most regulars will be too busy.
Hello to everyone, especially those feeling bereft, fearful or isolated. It is still dark, damp and suddenly misty outside, so I have left the balcony coloured lights on, to cheer passersby.
I am feeling very cut off as my special loved ones are too far away to have a family time.
But I did have a video call last night, and have fingers crossed for another at some point today.  I do know in my heart I should be glad and grateful they are all well and happy, and I send hugs to everyone who is in a less fortunate position.
Enjoy this special day as best you can. Pamper yourself in the best way.  Pretty soon we shall be able to get back to our individual “normality”.  Look after yourselves, and I wish you peace.

« on: Saturday 01 April 23 07:37 BST (UK)  »
I have a friend who is fluent in English, French and German.

She has "about 4 pages" of her family history in Czech, that she would like translating.

Can anyone help please?

Europe / France, Paris. Pre WWll "Actress"
« on: Thursday 02 March 23 09:09 GMT (UK)  »
Is there somewhere I could search for information regarding stage workers in Paris, pre WWll?

Born in 1903, with a love of song and dance, she "ran away" from home in Germany to Paris, and is listed as an actress in Nazi deportation papers.

So it looks like she survived there for 15 years or so?

It is a long shot of course, but I don't even know where to start. ::)
