Midlothian / Nicholas Jasper Mansabuis
« on: Friday 04 January 19 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, got a problem with this guy, can anybody help? First I'm not too sure about the spelling on the surname, It might be Mansabuis, Munsabinis, Mausibinis, Monsabinis or a combination of all. The signature is hard to decipher. Looks like a greek name. I have an address in January 1850 of 1 India Street, Edinburgh, but I can't trace him at all, looked at Edinburgh Directory, census, etc, but nope. But I know he was in Edinburgh during all of 1850. That's it, any help really would be much appreciated, thanks. The signature with the Mr Nicholas is not his writing but as recorded down by another, the one with N.J. M............... is his actual signature.

Midlothian / James Davies Kelly VC
« on: Friday 30 May 14 11:15 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information from the 1891or 1881 Edinburgh census, to see if James Davies Kelly is listed. Born Canongate1835, died Edinburgh March 1893. He may be under James Davies as he dropped the name Kelly on occasion. A soldier who won the VC in 1858 and was discharged/retired with a pension. I really trying to find out when he left the army. He is buried in North Merchiston Cemetery.
Any help with this guy would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Canada Lookup Request / Hugh Edmonstone Montgomerie of Montreal
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 10:34 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for any help in tracing Hugh Edmonstone Montgomerie during his time in Montreal and his father's family from there.
Hugh was born in Trinidad in 1820, his mother was Bethia Edmonstone from Scotland and his father John Mongomerie from Montreal. Both families had plantations there. Mother died in 1821 and the father died in New York 1836c. I'm guessing that when the emancipation act came in John moved back to Montreal and took Hugh with him to be brought up with the Montgomerie family there. I have Hugh in Montreal in 1845-46 as a member of the Montreal Light Infantry and then in 1847 he turns up in Stirling, Scotland. His mother's family originate from there. Then I have him in London in the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census's. His occupation is listed as shipowner. He died in April 1891 in Montreal. He must have kept ties with Montreal during his lifetime as I have him listed as a director in the Canadian Agency Association in 1859.
Thats about it really, apart from a vague reference to a Hugh E. Montgomerie and an arson charge in Montreal in 1846?
I would really like help for anyone who can shed some light on this man when he lived in Montreal, many thanks in advance.

Looking for any help on this please.

An old document turned up in an attic in the South of England, and has the name Hugh Edmonstone Montgomery, Stirling, on it.

I've traced him in an book, which states that he was "currently residing in Stirling" in April 1847, thats it, nothing else, anyone throw any light on this individual? by chance.

thanks, Stewart.
