Posting on behalf of a friend who has recently received some info about her maternal G/G/Grandfather

Can anybody find any newspaper item to support the following:

1871 census for Hull - James McCormick aged 35 born Ireland - Detective of police

Death March qtr 1876 Hull James McCormick aged 40

1881 his wife Mary is shown as a police widow.

Information is that James was shot & killed whilst on duty.  Unfortunately the original source of the info is abroad & cannot be contacted at the present time.  It's possible the info came from his death cert & if no newspaper article can be found a copy cert will be obtained to prove/disprove cause of death

The Common Room / Inheritance query - advice please
« on: Saturday 16 December 23 23:30 GMT (UK)  »
This is the scenario

Widowed mother had 2 children.  She died October 2022.  Her Will left her flat & assets to her unmarried daughter who lived with her

May 2023 her only son died.  No will but he was divorced with 3 adult children & grandchildren

December 2023 unmarried daughter found dead.  No will found at the moment.  Owned her flat under the terms of her mothers will & has a substantial bank account

Question

If no will is found - am I right in saying that her late brothers 3 children inherit her entire estate?

She was Elizabeth Wright nee Doughty b 1888 died 1965

If some colour could be added that would be fantastic but I would just be happy with a sharper image if possible.

Gertrude Giles nee Quine was born in Onchan on 29.9.1901.  Parents James John Quine & Sarah nee Hamilton

In 1935 Gertrude had an illegitimate daughter in Manchester who was adopted at 6mths old & it is that daughter I am trying to help  find her mother's ancestry.  The daughters christian names were changed after the adoption.

In 1938 Gertrude married Albert William Giles in Manchester and they are both on the 1939 register in Manchester although Gertrude's birthdate is shown as 29.9.1902 and Albert's as 26.3.1902.

I cannot find deaths for either of them after 1939 & wondered if they perhaps went to live in the IOM.  I even checked cwgc.org in case they died in WW2

Albert is not the 1972 death in Bedfordshire as that Albert can also be found in 1939 in Bedfordshire with the same birthdate.

Gertrude is not the 1989 death in Manchester as that Gertrude has a different birthdate & can be found on the 1939 register

I can't find any children born to them nor can I find any outgoing passenger records indicating they emigrated.

I have looked on Manx BMD but it came up with no results.

I have all information up to 1939 but just need to find Gertrude's death if possible.

World War Two / General question re Army "standards" in 1936
« on: Tuesday 21 February 23 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Bit lengthy but please bear with me  ::)

Back in 2021 my cousins daughter was contacted following a DNA match.

As she lives in Oz - I did the research for her and confirmed her grandfather (my uncle) had fathered a child by a married woman back in 1936.  He was 19yrs old when the child was born & serving at Jellalabad Barracks in Wiltshire when the birth was registered.  The child was born & registered in Lancashire in an area where there was (& still is) an Army barracks & would have been conceived late 1935 so he must have been stationed in Lancs at that time.

Child was registered in the married womans name but my uncle was present when the birth was registered & his signature on the register matches that on other military documents.  (I bought a copy of the original birth registration entry)

She now has his WW2 service record which shows he enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1939 but makes no mention of any previous service.  There is a statement from a civilian employer showing he was employed 1936-1939 & saying they are unaware of any previous military service.

Now (finally) to my question.

He would have probably had to seek special leave to travel from Wiltshire to Lancashire to register the birth & had to give a reason.    Could that have resulted in disciplinary action (conduct unbecoming etc) & he was either dismissed or resigned?

If so - why would his previous service plus any disciplinary action not be shown on his WW2 service record?

I have finally had a reply to my letter of complaint with a suggested work round.

Good Morning

Please accept my sincerest apololgies for the delay in responding to you.  Upon receipt of your email, I asked our Operations Support Manager to go back to the service provider to re look at this and unfortunately, this has taken longer than anticipated.

They have confirmed that there is still a bug in the system which they are working to address but in the mean time, I've been advised that there is a work around and I've attached a screenshot of this.

Once again, I'm very sorry for the inconvenience and delay.

The screen shot was so tiny it was virtually impossible to see what it was but it works by putting inverted commas on one side only as follows:

Surname              "Ross

Christian name      John"

I have tried it and it does restrict "hits" to the surname Ross

I know there were probate entries for both my parents on the old site - but nil on the new one.  Using the above workaround turned both up no problem - both pre 1996 deaths

Other Countries / Uruguay address & search for a James & Jessie "Bray"
« on: Saturday 23 April 22 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am helping a lady trace the origins of her g/g/grandmother and wonder if there is any way of obtaining info on the following address.  This address is on several letters in the 1880's sent to her illegitimate daughter who was b 1868/69 in Scotland

Quote
Estancia Neuva Mehlem
Fray Bentos
Republica del Uruguay
South America
April 28

and signed

I remain your affectionate  Mother Jessie Bray

The illegitimate daughter married as Bella Fraser in the USA (the daughters origins are being investigated separately)

In other letters Jessie refers to her husband as James.  There is no Scottish marriage between a James Bray & a Jessie Fraser or to a Jessie with any other surname.

The letters are very old and I am working from a transcription but the daughter must have written to her mother in 1909 as this is the reply.  (the daughter married Merwyn D Gibbons hence the name on the letter)

Quote
Estancia Nueva Mehlem
De La
Sociedad Bienes Rurales
Guillermo J. Lawrie
Departamento de Rio Negro
Fray-Bentos (R.O.)

Nueva Mehlem, July 3, 1909

Mrs. M.D. Gibbons (sic.)
43 Chapel St, Westfield, Mass, US

Madam,

Your letter of Feb 26th was opened by post as Mrs. Jessie Bray left this estancia the year 1895 and went as housekeeper to Dr. William Walker Buenos Aires.

Dr. Walker’s address can be obtained from the Argentine Brewery calle Brazil 731 Buenos Aires or should you wish that I should write to Dr. Walker and inquire, please write me to that effect.

                  Your &c
                  G. Lawrie

The illegitimate daughter was born 1868/69 from US census entries so Jessie must have been born 1840's

She was presumably widowed by 1895 so may have died in Buenos Aries

Any info at all would be greatly appreciated

The Common Room / Probate Registry site's response to my feedback
« on: Monday 14 March 22 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=858522.0

I have posted this as a new topic as it deals more with their response to feedback.  I'll refrain from comment - particularly the last part - but have drafted a reply which I am still working on

Me to them

You need to check your programming etc following my experience detailed below.  Totally haywire
Looking for a  1965 will for Hugh Owen Roberts.    Input surname etc & am presented with 48 pages of results - but not all for Roberts

Robertshaw/Robertson then a page of Roberts & back to Robertson.  Finally get into Roberts and after 2 pages ending with Florence Roberts I get returned to the beginning.

Their response

Due to the way that the calendars are scanned, the search feature is based on indexing.
In a lot of cases, an uncommon surname will be sandwiched in amongst more common names.

Unfortunately on some occasions, you might have to navigate through a calendar with a close alphabetical range to find your desired match.

Something to note, as long as you have the correct FULL NAME, DOD, PROBATE DATE, REGISTRY,  you can actually type anything to those fields and we'll find it.
For Example: If you typed BROWN and view the calendar for Brown, but entered the details for John Smith and those details were accurate, we would be able to locate it.
