Devon Lookup Requests / Eggbuckland Parish Records
« on: Thursday 18 August 11 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone had access to these as they aren't on IGI and I can't get to the Devon Records Office.

I am trying to trace back from Honor Williams born approximately 1815 and married William Counter in approxiamtely 1820.  According to an index of headstones in Eggbuckland Church she died in 1829.  In the same grave were her son, Richard, and Anna Williams (who I'm assuming to be her sister).  Anna's parents are given as Henry and Jane Williams.

I'm interested in any further information on Henry and Jane - other children, their marriage.

Thank you

Jo

Armed Forces / John Fowler - Greenwich pensioner
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 09:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find out more about my ancestor John Fowler (in the hope that I can trace his family back).

What I know is that he was born in approximately 1805 in Birmingham.  By late 1830s he is in Plymouth and has married(?) Mary Bebell.  On a child's birth certificate in 1838 he is a private in the Royal Marines.  He was in the Isle of Ascension around 1841/42 as another child was born there.  In the 1851 census he was a Greenwich pensioner.

I've tried the NA, FindMyPast and A****try but can't see him there.

I would be grateful for any information which I can be pointed in the direction of.

Armed Forces / Edward Higgins - Naval service?
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 09:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am curious about my ancestor Edward Higgins as on all census 1851 - 1901 he is listed as boatman/waterman but on the 1911 census his occupation is given as navel pensioner.

I've searched through the NA, FindMyPast and A****try but can't identify him in any of the records there.

What I do know is:

He was born approximately 1836, in Plymouth, parents James and Jane.  At his marriage to Ellen Coles in 1857 his profession was seaman.

I'd be grateful for information or directions to where anything can be found.

Thnaks

Devon Lookup Requests / Right family?
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm not sure if I have the right family and would welcome any opinions.

My 2xG Grandfather, John Counter,  married Mary Jane Tapp on 29.12.1878.  Marriage details:

Mary Jane Tapp, 20 years old, father Samuel Philip Tapp, bootmaker.
On all future census' her POB is given as Plymouth and in the 1911 census she is called Mary Jane Fowler Counter.

I found a family which I thought was correct.  Details below:

1871 census - RG10/2118/117/21
St Andrew's, Plymouth
Samuel Tapp, Head, 34, Bootmaker, kingsbridge, Devon
Mary Tapp, Wife, 30,...., Plymouth, Devon
Mary ", dau, 12, scholar, Plymouth, Devon
Samuel ", son, 9, ", Plymouth, Devon
Minney ", dau, 7,", Plymouth, Devon
Albert ", son, 5, ", Plymouth, Devon
Louisa ", dau, 15mths, Plymouth, Devon

1861 census - RG9/1437/69/13
Charles, Plymouth
Samuel Tapp, Head, 24, Bootmaker, Kingsbridge, Devon
Mary ", wife, 23, ...., Stonehouse, Devon
Mary J F ", dau, 2, ...., Plymouth, Devon
Albert ", son, ..., Plymouth, Devon

In Apr quarter 1858 a Samuel Tapp married Mary Jane Fowler.

In the 1881 census (RG11/2487/58/5) Samuel is in the parish of St James & St Paul, Bristol.  However, his daughter Mary J is still with the family!  And John and Mary Counter are together in Plymouth.

Do I have the right Samuel Tapp for my Mary?

I welcome any thoughts as I can't find an alternative family.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Eliza Thorne - 1861 census
« on: Monday 25 July 11 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I can't find my 2x Great Grandmother in the 1861 census.  What I do know is:

She was born in 1851, Horton with Woodlands, Dorset.

She is with her parents, Thomas and Catherine, and other siblings in the 1851 census (HO107/1854, 270, 18).  They're living in Horton, Woodlands, Dorset.

I'm fairly certain I've found her father in the 1861 census - RG9/1336, page 16, living in Woodlands

And I think I've found her in 1871 census, living in London - RG10/805, page 28.  She marries James Minton in Richmon on 20.12.1874.

Eliza would only be 10 in 1861 which seems very young to be on her own somewhere.

Thanks for any assistance.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Parents of Thomas Plumbridge
« on: Friday 08 July 11 10:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've been trying to find the parents of Thomas Plumbridge and have come across several other people's pages on-line where they are given as Edward Plumbridge and Martha Sink, with a birth around 1782 in Ockham.

I haven't been able to confirm this myself on any of the family history sites but before I dismissed this information, I wanted to see if anyone else could see where this information had come from.

The last piece of information I have on Thomas is that he married Charlotte Arrow 11 September 1801 in Ockham

I'd be grateful for any help.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Frederick Pritchard/Susannah Davis
« on: Thursday 07 July 11 13:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi

This is a bit of a last ditch effort to trace this part of the family further back.

I'd like to try and find birth records for both of them.

In 1841 census (HO107/1058/8/43),
Frederick is 25 and born in county
Susannah (rocrded as Hannah) is 20 and born in county

In 1861 (RG9/352)
Frederick is 45 (?) and POB is Lambeth
Susannah is 41 and POB is Lambeth

and in 1871 (RG10/608/pg 17).
Frederick is 60 and POB is Newington, Walworth
Susannah is 52 and POB Lambeth

I got the maiden name of Davis from a child's birth certificate.

ETA: A likely marriage for this couple gives their parents as:
Thomas Prithcard, Carpenter and Thomas Davis, bricklayer.

If anyone is able to find any possibilities I'd be grateful.

Jo
