United States of America / Rachel COOKE (COOK) birth c1859
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 01:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya.

Trying my best to try find her but needing help.

I'm looking for the birth of a Rachel Cook somewhere in America about 1859. Parents are James Thomas Cooke (Cook) and Martha Docherty (surname varies ALOT).

James and Martha married in 1855 in Renfrew, Scotland. Then they vanish and then they appear back in Scotland 1864 for the birth of another child back in Renfrew. In 1871 Martha is with Rachel and her boys, a widow and Rachel is only listed as being born in America.

Rachel died in 1876 aged 17 and in 1871 she's aged 12.

If anyone can help find the birth and family that would be great!

Ireland / John C Aird mystery death
« on: Wednesday 26 July 23 04:40 BST (UK)  »
Hiya,

I was wondering if someone could help me find the death or someone. Very little is known about him.

John Charles Aird born May 29th 1921 Hamilton, Scotland

Parents were Catherine Devine and David Aird, unmarried. John is with Catherine and her cousins family in the census in Hamilton.

I’m trying to find out what happened to him. We know he died because many many years ago my great uncle told me he had received a letter from a lawyer and it was from Ireland to say John had died and had left some money to him, my uncle had no idea this man even existed, no one seems to have any information on him, I can only imagine it was maybe the 90s as I had this conversation in the late 2000s

Any help would be great, unfortunately I can’t really give much more detail as my uncle is now deceased and my own aunts and uncles haven’t a clue what I’m talking about

Ireland / Elder of Derry
« on: Friday 23 April 21 04:14 BST (UK)  »
Hiya,

I was hoping someone might be able to help find some information on an ancestor called Robert Elder. He was born about 1859 in Derry, in 1881 aged 22 he’s in Glasgow with his brother had new Wife (James and Annie McKiver), James appears to have went back to Ireland and settled in the Belfast area and died 1924 , but Robert stayed on and got married in 1887 to Elizabeth McAffer, both stated to be 25 years old and then he vanishes, his parents were John Elder dead by 1878 and Mary Kane, supposedly died in 1893 in Ireland but no idea where. Robert and James’s sister Mary is my 3rd great grandmother and she was married in Coleraine in 1864 to Henry Kennedy and then came over to Scotland in the mid 1870s. I always assumed Mary came over without other family but found out earlier about the two brothers which means maybe more came over, who knows, but would like to find out what happened to Robert

Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me try find information on a photographer. My friend has a picture from the early 1900s. The name on the bottom of the cdv is W.A.Astin 121, Stobnall Street, Burton on Trent. I’ve tried looking but can’t seem to find anything so hoping someone could help. My friends confused as the person she believes to be the sitter is W.A.Astin himself, William Appleby Astin, who was born at 121 Stobnall Street in 1880 and died in 1918 and in the census he is a hairdresser, so she thinks the name and address is that of the sitter instead of the actual photographer which confuses me so hoping someone on here might be able to find something out to make sense of it

Scotland / David McNeill/Neill whereabouts unknown help
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello, Can any help me find an ancestor?

David McNeill/Neill was born 1814 in Tranent, Scotland to John and Ann Young. I can’t find him anywhere. His mother died in 1862 in Tranent and he signed it, so that helps a little. I know his mother and a few siblings moved to West Lothian near Linlithgow, Carriden and Bathgate. His mother is there in 1861. I’ve been following three David’s, one married to Margaret Chalmers, one to Margaret Wood and the last to Elizabeth Reid. Chalmers and Reid aren’t him. The one married to reid was the son of David and Isabel Neill 1815 and the one married to Chalmers died in the 1850s, which left Margaret Wood who this David married in 1836 in Tranent. I’ve found him in 1861 with Margaret and his children, one being Janet who died in 1889, married to James Wardrop, in 1871 David is with his daughter in New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Margaret died in 1870. On his daughters death the husband has said David is still alive, but I can’t find him on the 1881 census. I’m not even sure this is the right David, but it’s the only lead I have for now. I’ve seen multiple trees on Ancestry, full of utter rubbish and copied over from tree to tree, so I cant even rely on them to help, but some have said he is the son of John and Ann, but again not reliable. He is listed as a miner and iron miner in both census’. I was thinking perhaps he even went to America as he had two siblings that moved there in 1863 and 1867

Hiya

I was hoping maybe some car enthusiasts might be able to help date when this photo was taken. It’s taken in the Cambridge area but not sure on the date as it was amongst old photo form the 20s to the 40s. Was hoping maybe someone could take a look and guess who the make of the car was which could help date the photo, I know behind the little triangle at the front of the car there’s some sort of circular logo perhaps, I thought Ford maybe, and can see it’s hand cranked. I know nothing about cars, even ones today 😂 so any help would be great

Hiya

We are trying to figure out who this woman is amongst old photos we received from a family member. If we think who it’s is she was born in 1848, but we noticed she’s wearing a rather unusual badge below her chin, the right one I think looks like a badge with the royal crest, the three lions, harp and lone lion, we were wondering what it might be as we can’t figure out the badge in the left but seem to have little crowns above it. I thought she might of been in mourning for Queen Victoria in 1901 if that’s possible, or maybe just a jubilee badge but her dress looked rather detailed as well with the ruching

Any help would be great please

Hiya

I’ve recently got hold of old photos and trying to figure out who they are, this is one of them and we have no others of him. No name or nothing but we know he’s from England. Was hoping someone might be able to determine what date this is and if infact he is in mourning. We have a number of men it could be but one did have a wife that died in 1886. The bottom seems to be cut off and the back is blank

Thank you
