The Common Room / Can anyone help me find Anna Maria HARSE please?
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Anna Maria HARSE was in Axbridge Union Workhouse in 1851 aged 2.  With her are Hannah HARSE aged 41 and Joseph HARSE aged 11.  Joseph and Anna's place of birth is given as Weare and Hannah's is given as South Brent.

I am pretty certain that Hannah (nee ATWELL) was baptised in Weare, Somerset on 3 Dec 1809 and that she married a Joseph HARSE/HEARSE in Bristol in 1835.  Their son Joseph was born in Newport, Mon in 1839 and the family were there in 1841.

The family were living in Nailsea, Somerset when another son Thomas was born in 1847.  Joseph HARSE Snr died at Pill, Somerset in September 1849 followed by his 2 year old son Thomas in the October.  The informant for both was Emma HARSE who was present at the deaths and I now know her to be Joseph's adult daughter from a previous marriage.

There is a likely sighting of Anna Maria in 1861 in Hopkins Street, Weston-super-Mare.  Anne HARSE is 11 years old, born Pill, Somerset and a boarder with the Fisher family.  Hannah is remarried to William HARES and is also living in Hopkins Street, WsM with a lodger Joseph HURST aged 18 who was born in Newport, Mon.

I have always assumed that Anna Maria was Hannah's daughter and therefore Joseph's sister.  However, I now realise that I have no proof of this as the only two records I have for Anna/Anne do not show any family relationships.   I really should know better by now...   :-[

If anyone can help me find a birth/baptism for Anna/Anne or what happened to her/them I would be very grateful.

The Common Room / Where to go from here? - anyone up for a challenge?
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 14:52 BST (UK)  »
A bit of a long shot I'm afraid...

Kezia DARRAND had a son Cornelius baptised in Haxey, Lincolnshire 13 Dec 1794.  Kezia married William CHAMBERLAIN in Haxey 5 Jul 1796.  Their daughter Mary was baptised in Epworth, Lincolnshire in 1797.

Cornelius CHAMBERLAIN married Fanny DAY in Shipham, Somerset 17 Aug 1815.  One witness was named Mary CHAMBERLAIN.  He died in Shipham aged 42 (on death cert - NBI says 47) 8 Oct 1837.

Cornelius and Fanny had at least 8 children including Kezia (baptised 1816 in Shipham) and Sarah (baptised in Worle, Somerset in Dec 1830)

Sarah CHAMBERLAIN (born Worle, Somerset c1831) is living with her 'Uncle' Cornelius CHAMBERLAIN in Epworth in 1851.  There is also a Sarah CHAMBERLAIN there (born out of county) in 1841.

Sarah Chamberlain DARRAND married John STANDRING in 1857.

In 1911 Sarah STANDRING is still living in Epworth and gives her place of birth as Worle, Som.

Additional possible clues:

There is a William CHAMBERLAIN named as the father of William, base child of Ann LOCK in Shipham 1816.

William CHAMBERLAYNE is buried in Shipham in June 1835 aged 59.

Mary CHAMBERLAYNE is buried Shipham in Nov 1836 aged 77.

I would love to know what happened to Kezia Darrand CHAMBERLAIN and more about William too.

If anyone has an idea of how to proceed from here i would be very grateful.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Bristol St Stephen 1835 marriage look up please
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I would be ever so grateful if someone could please have a look at this marriage for me.

Hannah ATWELL married Joseph HARSE or HEARSE on 13 May 1835 at St Stephen, Bristol.  I have this much from FamilySearch.com and a published book of Bristol marriages.

It would be helpful to know if the marriage was by Banns or Licence, the couple's marital statuses and names of witnesses.

Many thanks

Debbie

The Common Room / Catholic baptism - no mother's details? - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 20 February 12 17:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently found two possible baptisms for one of my brick walls.  Have been searching for years for a Jane Carroll daughter of James born in Liverpool c1876.

So after discovering that if the family were catholic (family rumour ) I should instead be looking for Joanna Carroll daughter of Jacobus/i I have the following:

6 Jul 1876 Joanna Carroll filia Jacobi et Helena Carroll olim Carr

23 Jan 1877 Joanna Carroll filia Jacobi Carroll

Both baptised at St Alban's Church Liverpool by the same priest.

I think the first one is very likely mine but don't want to ignore the second one without looking into it further.

My main question is what reasons would there be for no mention of a mother in the baptism record?

I have come across this a couple of times for C of E baptisms but they have been much earlier.

Devon Lookup Requests / Clayhidon Baptism c1842 TALBOTT please
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm hoping someone has access to the PRs for Clayhidon early 1840s.  Robert TALBOTT's birth was registered in Wellington District in Mar Q 1842.  I am also  hoping that he is actually my Robert BURROUGHS/RENDELL born Clayhidon according to the 1851 census.  I would be very grateful if some lovely person can help at all with this even if only to rule him out.

TIA

The Lighter Side / Michael Sheen - Coming Home BBC Wales
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 21:06 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access to BBC Wales (Think it's Sky Channel 972) this programme is being repeated tomorrow (Sunday 5th) at 6.30pm.

I will admit to a personal link with this episode.  The "baddie" of the story is my great great grandfather Aneurin Rees  :o.  Won't say any more, so as not to spoil it for anyone who does want to watch it  ;).

Somerset / Nailsea: Newspapers of 1840s?
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Yesterday I received a death certificate for a 7 year old boy who drowned in Nailsea in August 1846  :'(.  The Coroner was the informant and the death wasn't registered until June 1847 so I am assuming there would have been an inquest.  Just wondered if anyone can tell me which newspapers are most likely to have covered this?

TIA

Monmouthshire / Botany Bay, St Woollos?
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 10:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Have just received a death certificate from 1837 with place of residence of the informant "Botany Bay, St Woollos".  I know that it must have been somewhere in Newport but just curious to find out if anyone has any idea where this was?

TIA <hopeful>  ;D

Somerset / RAWLINS/RAYLANDS/SPRUD Congresbury
« on: Monday 27 October 08 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
My 4x great grandmother was baptised in Congresbury as Christian RAYLANDS in 1791 the daughter of John and Ann.  Her brother John was baptised in 1793 and probably buried the following year.
I have looked for a marriage for Christian's parents and found a possible one in nearby Wrington.  John RAWLINS of Congresbury married Ann SPRUD of Wrington in 1790.
I have also found burials in Congresbury of John RAWLINS in 1825 aged 70 and Ann RAWLINS in 1856 aged 87.  This would give their births as c1755 and c1769 respectively.

I have looked for an Ann RAWLINS in 1841 & 1851 and have found the following:

1851 Congresbury
Ann RAWLINS aged 82, a widow, lodger with John and Elizabeth MARSH.
1841 Worle
Ann ROLLINGS aged 70 born Somerset.  Under occupation it states inmate
Ann has a Samuel ROLLINGS aged 13 (also inmate) living with her.  The reason I believe this could be 'my' Ann is that they are living in the same building (but separate household) as Christian CURRY who is definitely my 4xgt grandmother!

So does this look alright or have I made too many guesses?  I can't get back to the library to look at the PRs for a couple of weeks so want to work out what to look for in advance.  There is a John ROYLANCE marriage in Congresbury in 1758, wondering if connected?  There also seem to be a lot of SPRUDs and SPRODs in the area.  Really hoping they are mine  :)
