Midlothian / Agnes R Simpson
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 22:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I am looking for Agnes R Simpson born 1902, Midlothian, Scotland. She may have been born Agnes Ritchie as illegitimate and then adopted to a family called Simpson.
Unfortunately adoption records are not available for this era, they may have been charities or even unofficial. Legal adoption was much later, 1930.
She emigrated to Portland, Oregon, USA, in 1923-25, and married Joseph Harold Comery from Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Died Oregon 1986.
She was a direct relative but having trouble finding her between when she was born either as Ritchie or Simpson from 1902 to 1925. I met her in the 1960s and 1970s as she was the wife of my granny’s husband’s brother. I’m in touch with her grandchildren and would like to close the gaps. I suppose things like this were not spoken about.
Any ideas on the way forward would be fantastic.
Thanks so much
Jane

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of photo please

Please can you date this photo. I think its either 1904 or 1926. The clothing could be a family heirloom so cannot be relied on to date.

Thanks

The Common Room / Adoption records
« on: Monday 04 May 09 18:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi

How do I get records of adoption or are they not available? The person who was adopted is not living and neither are the adoptive parents. I have only found out from the 1911 census that the person was adopted. There is only 1 line of descendants, myself and my sister, then our children. So we are the closest living relatives. All the persons natural and adoptive siblings are dead or over 120 years old!

Thanks

Nottinghamshire / St John the Baptist, Beeston Parish Church
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 22:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Just to let you know that the church of St John the Baptist, Beeston, Nottingham (Southwell Diocese), has been closed since Sept 2007. It has now reopened and is magnificent. The major celebrations will be in mid June around the patronal festival of 24 June 2008. The celebration weekend is 22nd June 2008.

We have reordered the church and alot of this work turned out to be remedial for damp, drains, old electrics etc.  The comments from parishioners are that the church looks twice the size, is so much lighter, twice the space etc.

I was chair of fundraising and it took nearly £980,000. This was a great effort to raise so thanks to all those who helped.

The Common Room / General Paralysis of the Insane
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I feel quite devastated to find that my great grandfather died of General Paralysis of the Insane in 1915. My great grandmother did not die until 1966 and was left with 6 children. He was a handsome chap in 1911 and gave my great grandmother a portrait photo in 1911 saying affectionately yours on his 40th birthday.

The illness must have come on over a few years and he ended up in the county asylum. Unfortunatey the records are closed for 100 years but I could pay £20 an hour for the local archivist to do the research.

There are 2 frustrations:

1) Why can I not do my own research, why can I not have a background check and sign a confidentiality clause. Why should I have to pay for research into my own relative? May be I could now get the information under FOI?
2) That I have built up a false picture from knowing my great grandmother, my favourite granny, my mum, finding his photos and building a romantic image of him including putting him on a pedestal

....and then finding that he died of syphilis! My great grand mother did not and survived him for 51 years. Where did he get it from and what suffering did he cause his family?

Is researching the family tree such a good idea?
