Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry 'media experience'
« on: Thursday 14 January 16 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have had a sub to ancestry for some years, but just recently have not been able to view other peoples media pictures - just get a blank grey screen with a couple of green rectangles, with no explanation or reminder that I need to update anything, though I suspect this may be the problem ::). Please can anyone help - I have just renewed my subscription. I have not asked ancestry yet as I hoped one of you could help me in a way I can understand ;)
Thanks, Helen

Derry (Londonderry) / Pressley/McClenahan
« on: Thursday 19 November 15 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am new to Ireland research, but am very pleased to find my 2gtUncle's marriage, and was wondering if there is any evidence of his time in Ireland, and maybe of his wife. I have all the info on their life in England (Weston super Mare) but it is the Irish bit I am missing.

Robert James Pressley was born 10/08/1832 in Wylye Wiltshire. I have him in 1841 and 1851, then he disappeared (to Ireland?) I have all his family etc
He married Rebecca McClenahan (born 1832) 20/09/1866 in Agherton Londonderry. Her father is Pierce McClenahan.
They appear in 1891 and 1901 in Weston s Mare he is "retired Chief Civil Servant, Inland Revenue"
Also with them is Rebecca's sister Mary Ann(a) McClenahan b 1827
R J died in Weston in 1903 but I could not find any death for the 2 ladies
However there are deaths with correct dates in Coleraine , Mary in 1903, and Rebecca in 1916, and a 1911 census entry for Rebecca Pressley with a servant in Lodge Rd Coleraine. She states she was born in Kerry.

I would love to have information about their time in Ireland and anything about the sisters.
Thank You

The Common Room / Fletcher family disappearence
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 18:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have a family who have all disappeared, I have looked for deaths, marriages and censuses, but have found very little. It occurred to me that maybe most of them emigrated. With most big families, at least some of them can be traced, but I have only 1 in 1891.

This family were all born in Hanging Langford Wiltshire, except the mother Mary Ann (nee Wickham). I have them all up to the dates listed, so do not need that info - I just would like to know where they went :) I have listed the census dates when I found them.

Thomas Fletcher b 1825 Hanging Langford ag lab and local Methodist Preacher, 1841,1851,1861, 1871, 1881
Mary Ann           b 1833 in Wylye (wilts)1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881
    Children
Fanny                b 1851   1861, 1871(servant in London)
Jane                  b 1855    1861, 1871 (working in Hampshire)
Charles              b 1857    1861, 1871
Ellen                  b 1860    1861, 1871

The Common Room / Greenhills in Essex
« on: Monday 22 December 14 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
My father told me they used to visit the 'Greenhill cousins' in Essex (oh why oh why didn't I ask him their names when I could ::)) I have a photo of a little boy with grandparent aged people labelled 'K*****'s birthday Jun 1943 and as there are 4 candles on the cake he was born in 1939.

On freebmd there is a K***** Greenhill registered Dec 1939 in Romford, parents Greenhill and Leverett. There are 7 more children registered to the same parents, first born in 1931, but I cannot find a marriage. I have tried to find a link with the known Greenhill family, with no success.
I do not want to give any more details of this family as some may well be living. I have looked on google, ancestry and various places but can find no marriage or clues to their Christian names. I know I could send for the b cert but as they are pretty distant I do not want to at the moment.

My thoughts about the photo was maybe little K had been evacuated to his gparents, and that would explain why there are no parents or siblings present.

Please has anyone got any suggestions about this marriage - I am going round in circles :D

Armed Forces / Napoleons escort
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 13:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi , I have absolutely no knowledge of the armed forces, so please excuse my ignorance of all things military.
It is a family story that an ancestor was involved in escorting Napoleon to exile.
I had info years ago that Job Dowdell had an army number, and he would have been a young man in 1815, so seems a likely candidate. He lived in Wiltshire, but I have found out that the 53rd who did the duty were a Shropshire reg. I have also found that the Northumberland was the main ship with a frigate and 6 'barks and sloops' also in attendance.

Does anyone know how I can get any nearer to the truth?

Thank you in anticipation :)  Helen

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Mary Ann Cass
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 18:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me :)

I am looking for Mary Ann Cass before she married Charles Dowdell in 1856 in Wylye, Wilts. I have them in 1861 and 1871, living in Deptford, Wylye Wilts. It was Charles 2nd marriage. Sadly he died in Devizes lunatic asylum soon after Mary Ann died. As an ag lab maybe living in a tied cottage, perhaps things got on top of him after she died. I have all the info on his first marriage to Catherine Sparey.

Anyway that is by the way. I cannot find Mary Ann Cass anywhere before she married, so wonder whether she was a widow. unfortunately there are only 2 censuses to look in. I've also looked in IGI . According to the census entries she was born in 1796 in Martin which is Wilts, near the new forest.

Any ideas?

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Lavinia's birth and marriage
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 17:00 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the birth and marriage of Lavinia who married John Robinson. Rather than tie myself in knots trying to explain, below is my previous thread. Some wonderful rootschatters managed to find me lots of information on her husband and children, but no one can find her  marriage and therefore maiden name. It could be Whitelocke, Bowden , Small or something completely different. I am hoping someone may have access to local parish bmd's not generally available. They may have been non-conformists.

Lavinia and John Robinson probably married sometime between 1835-37. As she put Andover as her place of birth on censuses I am hoping that is where she married. Her birth could be1804-1811 depending on what you believe!
The previous thread is

Thank you so much for reading this :D

The Common Room / Lost Lavinia
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 14:26 BST (UK)  »
I have scoured ancestry, and found quite a lot on this lady Lavinia Robinson (her married name)and her daughter Amelia, but I would like to know:-
                      her maiden name
when and where she married John Robinson
                      her 1861 census return

I already have :-
                        1841 (all children born 1837-1841)
1851 (widowed as Lamma instead of Lavinia) and Amelia being the only child left)
                         1871
                        death 1879

Her daughter Amelia Ursula (or U A) Robinson never married, and left her money to my great aunt, and I am trying to find the connection to my family who were farmers in Wiltshire but with a very distant connection with Andover.

Please do not worry about finding anything other than the 3 things asked for ;)

I know wonders sometime happen on here, so here's hoping :D

Thank you, Helen

Australia / Sisera Eastment and family
« on: Thursday 27 February 14 15:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me.
I am following this family in Wiltshire, England, they disappear after 1853 to Australia (Sydney area) and then the 2 parents reappear in England to die, him in 1800 and her in 1895 in Weston super Mare, Somerset. I cannot find their dates of journey, and do not have access to Australian records.

Sisera Eastman                born 1826    Warminster Wilts
Charlotte Ann (nee Hurle) born 1820    Brixton Deverill, Wilts
Eliza Jane                        born 1847    Maiden Bradley, Wilts
Mary Bathsheba               born 1849    Maiden Bradley, Wilts
Sarah Ann                       born 1850    Maiden Bradley, Wilts

Charlotte was not the girls mother, but married Sisera in 1853 soon after he was widowed. They did not have anymore children as far as I know unless they were born and stayed in Australia. All the girls married in Aus and stayed there.

I do not need details of their families as they are a branch, but would be interested in the parents time there and their passage out and back. I am related to Charlotte. I would be happy to help any related Australians with this English branch of their family!

Thank you for your interest! :)

Helen
