Canada / Lilian Hodgson born Leeds 9.12.1912 - illegitimate. Father unknown.
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 19:30 BST (UK)  »
This girl was my late mother's half sister.   She was supposedly taken to Canada around age 2, with a couple who were emigrating,  as her mother (my maternal grandmother) could not care for her.   WW1 was underway in 1914. Were children really shipped overseas then.

We have only recently learned of the birth of this child who was the second illegitimate daughter.  The first was raised within the family but not with her mother.

I have a copy of the birth entry which I managed to find without much trouble.

Assuming that the story of the child's emigration to Canada is correct is it at all possible to find her and what happened to her.  It is possible that she was adopted by the couple before she left England.  But I wonder is it possible that someone out in Canada had a mother or grandmother born in England on the date I show above.

A long shot I know.  There is always the possibility that her going to Canada was just made up by the family when in actual fact she just went into care here.

Annie Halliday married Joseph Thomas Scott in 1893.  Marriage registered Bramley, Leeds.

Their children in 1911 were Annie jnr 17, Joseph jnr 7 and 3 year old twins Ada and Roland.

Are these people your ancestors.   Annie snr was one of the sisters of my maternal grandfather.

Canada / Statue in Toronto possible Peter Pan c1910
« on: Wednesday 06 March 13 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I have a photo of two great aunts taken in Canada c1910.   They lived in Toronto so presumably photo is there.    They are standing in front of a statue, could be Pan or Peter Pan.    I have read about and seen a photo of the Peter Pan in Glenn Gould Park but it is not the same.

Has anyone any ideas please.

Scotland / Change of name
« on: Saturday 06 August 11 00:20 BST (UK)  »
If a very young child is taken into care or adopted with their name being then changed would their original birth registration be redone thereby taking the original entry out of the birth indexes.    The period I am interested in is 1860s-70s.

English cases where this happens are put into a seperate index in the new name and need to be researched seperately I think.    Could this also be the case in Scotland.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Lillian Hodgson, born Armley, Leeds 9th Dec 1912

Hello

Does anyone recognise Lillian.   She was my mother's half sister.     She was my grandmother's illegitimate daughter.    My gran married in 1914 but Lillian was not raised as part of the family of ligitimate children.  It seems that she was brought up outside her natural family and possibly was taken to Canada.

Has anyone had experience of researching work accidents of the late 1800 early 1900s please.

My gt grandfather lost an arm in an accident at work but I do not know where he was living at that time.   I wonder if there could be a centralised record of such events.

England / Anyone have a Ciss and Max in their early 1900s relatives.
« on: Monday 18 April 11 00:13 BST (UK)  »
I recently bought a postcard with a photo of a baby.  On the reverse was a Christmas greeting to Maggie from Ciss and Max.   No postmark so I guess it was sent in an envelope.

Unfortunately although the photo was taken in a studio there is no ID of the photographer.

I can't scan onto the site myself but will get it done    a s a p.  Meanwhile I thought maybe someone out there might know something.   A long shot but you never know.

The baby looks about 4 months old.   Sitting on a fur rug on a chair no doubt held from behind by hidden Mum.    I think the baby is a girl.

Cheers
