Australia / New South Wales....Eva MUNFORD Paul George MUNFORD
« on: Sunday 07 June 15 09:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for info on my Great Aunt, Eva MUNFORD (nee Balls) b1910 Gt Yarmouth UK and her son Edit - living.

She emigrated form Gt Yarmouth UK in 1948 on SS Ranchi bound for Sydney after her husband Geo Thos Munford was killed in WW2.  She was listed as a farm worker on leaving UK and I think she may have lived in Coledale NSW and died in 1989.

I think she may have also got remarried to a James Herbert LUMMIS, but can't be certain.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

David

Norfolk / George Balls
« on: Thursday 07 May 15 23:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi....I'm looking for the father of George Balls baptised 1799 in Gissing, Norfolk.  I found his baptism record in Archdeacons Transcripts and his mother is listed as Elizabeth Balls, but no father is listed.

I'm puzzled as to why he wouldn't be listed.  Also, I can't find any record of Elizabeth being married.

The Common Room / Finding My G Grandfathers Death
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 23:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to find my G Grandfathers death.  He was Edgar Samuel Balls, b1876 in Gt Yarmouth.  I have found out quite a lot about him up to about 1911, but after that, nothing.  I know he was still alive in 1911 and in some of the census's he was listed as just Samuel.  I have searched and searched the death lists time and time again and come up with nothing.

On my Grandfather's marriage cert in 1928, he is listed as deceased and his occupation was stealworks labourer, which points to him being in Sheffield.  Whether or not he died pre 1928 is debatable, as he is supposed to have left his wife and family, so he may have been "deceased" in their eyes.

Could anyone give me some advice as to what other research I could carry out to find out what happened to him.  I don't suppose it helps that he flitted between Yarmouth and Sheffield for in the part of his life that I know about.

Cheers David

Armed Forces / Pte Edgar Samuel Balls...Second Boer War
« on: Monday 08 November 10 16:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've posted about this guy before, my Great Grandfather, Edgar Samuel Balls b1876 in Gt Yarmouth.  I've done some more research and I think I've found his unit etc.  On the 1901 census he is listed as Samuel Balls, Private, Infantry Militia in barracks in Colchester.  The C/O listed is Lt Col Edmund Roger Allday Kerrison of the Infantry Militia.  I have looked him up and found that he commanded 4th Batt Norfolk Regiment, 1900 to 1905.  I'm therefore presuming Edgar Samuel was in this same regiment.

According to a document dated 1906, he was awarded the QSA and KSA medals, for his involvement in the Second Boer War.

I think the 4th Batt. Norfolk Rgt was at Paardeberg, South Africa, according to Wikepedia. I still can't find any trace of Edgar Samuel, or his medals or service history. As I've said previously, he may have been known as just plain "Samuel" and not Edgar Samuel.  I know he wasn't killed in SA and was alive in 1911, also, I can't find any record of his death, maybe someone has an idea as to how I can find his death too.

All help appreciated.

Norfolk / 19th century Fishermens Deaths
« on: Saturday 30 October 10 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi, my GGGrandfather, Thomas Balls, is on my GGrandfathers 1876 birth cert as deceased, he was a fisherman in Yarmouth.  This would point to his death as sometime between the conception and registration of the birth, around 1875/6.  I can't find any trace of his death, apart from the birth cert.  Theres a burial by the name of Thomas Balls in Lawford, Essex, in 1875, which is quite a way round the coast from GT Yarmouth.

Does anyone know if fishermen of those times would go this far out to sea and if so and some catastrophe happened would they be buried locally and not be taken back "home" (that's of course if they were ever found)?  Also would there be any record of such accidents and what more could I try to find him?

Cheers David

Florence (on the right) selling ice cream, I think the name Mansi Bros can just be made out above her head.

Armed Forces / Uniform and Time Scale Info Wanted
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 20:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I hope I'm posting this in the right area.  I'm after some info on the pictures below.  They are of my G Grandfather, Edgar Samuel Balls, b1876 in Gt Yarmouth.  He is listed on the 1901 census as being in barracks in Colchester, it states that he is a private in the Infantry Millitia.  I have other evidence from 1906 in which he states he is in the Norfolk Artillery Millitia and took part in the South Africa Campaign (the second Boer War I presume) and was awarded the South African Campaign medal.

In the photo's he is with his wife and family, one of which is my Grandfather.  He was born in 1903, so I think the photo must have been taken around the outbreak of the First World War judging by the Union flags etc.

What I'd like to know is:
What is the date of this type of uniform?
What is the narrow multi coloured strip above his breast pocket and what does it denote?
Is or was there a regiment called the Norfolk Artillery Millitia?
Did they take part in the second Boer War?
The photo is on a post card, would it be a tintype photo?

Thanks in advance
David

Family History Beginners Board / Balls family Gt Yarmouth
« on: Tuesday 26 October 10 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've just joined this site after stumbling across it whilst browsing my "tree".  My family on my dad's side are the "Balls" from the Gt Yarmouth area.  I myself was born in Sheffield, my surname is Ball, as for some reason my grandfather dropped the "s" from Balls.  I have become obsessed with my g/grandfather, Edgar Samuel Balls, born at 4 Tower Cottages, Garden Lane, Gt Yarmouth in 1876.  I have found evidence of him in all the cencus' up to 1901 and his marriage in 1900, to Florence Hough from Sheffield.  I think he joined the Norfolk Artillery Militia in c. 1900 as he is listed as "Samuel Balls" in barracks at Colchester in the 1901 census.  He was also involved in the bribery allegations in the 1906 general election.  He and some others taking a bribe to vote for a particular Gt Yarmouth candidate, I have a transcript of his statement.  There is no sign of him in the 1911 census, although his wife and children are listed as living at No. 4, Row 119, Gt Yarmouth.  From then on I can't find any sign of Edgar, no death records, nothing.  My late dad told me he is supposed to have left Florence at some point, maybe this explains the dropping of the "s" by my grandad.  Sorry to drone on, but any help would be much appreciated.

Edgar Samuel and family, my grandad, Edgar is stood to the right.

Cheers David
