Armed Forces / Mystery abbreviations
« on: Saturday 30 March 24 10:45 GMT (UK)  »
This is an extract from an 1778 US publication of British Army Officers.  Does anyone know what the abbreviations

L.I
A.D.D.
G

stand for after the names of particular officers, please?  I have a suspicion that G stands for Grenadier - because I found this https://royalleicestershireregiment.org.uk/entity/108472-miles-lawford?q= - but L.I. and A.D.D. baffle me.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Post 1920 military records now at the National Archives
« on: Friday 19 January 24 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
Before they were transferred from the MOD, I understand that if someone requested (and paid) for, say, their grandfather's records, someone would physically go through filing cabinets (or similar) to find the relevant file and get it copied so that a reply could be sent to the person who requested the information.

I know that all the files have now been transferred to the National Archives where they are being catalogued and scanned - and that it's an enormous task that will take years (probably) - but does anyone know exactly how they're working through them?  For example, if they haven't catalogued/scanned grandad's records when someone applies, do they simply reply that they've got no record, or do they check both the scanned and unscanned records before replying?  If you see what I mean  ;D

Thanks for any info you can offer.

World War One / POW help, please
« on: Thursday 14 December 23 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
I'm told that Private 311397 Richard S Charlton was a POW whilst serving with the Corps of Hussars.

I've looked on the grandguerre.icrc.org website, and tried the Charlton's that aren't listed with a particular regiment, but couldn't find him and there's not a specific listing for the Corps of Hussars, so I don't know quite where else to look on that site.  I've also looked on Find My Past, because often there's a link to a POW card there, but there doesn't seem to be one for him.

Am I doing something wrong, please, or can anyone else find his POW record(s)?

Thanks

World War One / Uniform and date help, please
« on: Sunday 10 December 23 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have two photos of, allegedly, the same man, b. 1897 - on the group photo, he's the man far left holding the horse's rein.

1.  Do you think they're the same man?
2.  Does the RN one look pre-WW1, please?
3.  Can anyone identify the regiment of the man in the group photo, please?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Boer War Medals
« on: Saturday 25 November 23 15:19 GMT (UK)  »
I know that WW1 medals were stamped on the rim with the recipient's details (name, rank, number, regiment etc), but I don't know whether Boer War medals were the same.

Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Pre- and post-1920 Army Service Numbers
« on: Saturday 05 August 23 14:16 BST (UK)  »
Two questions, if I may, please :

1.  If a man was serving before August 1920 (when the new numbering system for all regiments came into effect) say, as Private 12345 in Regiment X, he wouldn't have kept his "original" 12345 service number would he?

2.  Assuming the answer to Q.1 is "No", when regiments began using the new numbering system (from the allocation issued by the MOD), did they all allocate numbers in the same way?  I mean, did they, allocate the first number in the series to, say, the man with the longest service, or did they, say, start with the WOs/sergeants and work down through the ranks?  Or did each Regiment do it their own way (whatever that was)?

I hope this makes sense!

Thanks

Armed Forces / Help with second line, please?
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 17:01 BST (UK)  »
This is a snip from a military record of a man b. 1842.

I can see the first line reads "Silver Medal for 'Long Service and Good Conduct' ", but I'm not entirely clear what the second line is all about unless it's just a record of where in the Army's papers the LSGC award was recorded.

Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks
