Armagh / Thomas QUIN, b. Armagh, Armagh ~1760
« on: Tuesday 21 April 15 04:15 BST (UK)  »
On 02 August 1778, Thomas QUIN, aged 18, born "Armagh parish, Armagh city, Armagh county", joined the Royal Artillery, the "Detachment of 5 Company". The record of his "inlistment" gives a physical description of Thomas, and the fact that he could read and write.

Thomas was posted to Plymouth Dock, Devon, England, where he married Charlotta MASON in Dec. 1781. (She may have been born in Woolwich, Kent, home base of the Royal Artillery.) The couple apparently had at least two children. John Thomas QUIN was apparently born in Plymouth, Devon very shortly after the marriage, ~1782.  William QUIN was born in Woolwich, Kent in 1787.

Thomas QUIN's regiment was shipped to Nova Scotia, and Thomas died there, in Halifax, in 1792.

I do not know what became of his wife Charlotta nor of their son William. Their son John Thomas QUIN, at the age of eleven, joined the Royal Artillery as a drummer and trumpeter. (He is my ancestor and I know the outline of his history, also of some of his descendants. Some descendants also joined the Royal Artillery.)

So far, the parentage and earlier history of Thomas QUIN of Armagh is unknown to me. I notice that in Bradshaw's Directory for 1819, there are some QUINs in English Street, Armagh, including a John and a Thomas, but I have no clue to whether they are related to my Thomas.

I also see that other members of this forum have QUIN or QUINN ancestors from Armagh. Does anyone have a QUIN family in Armagh 1700s with a son Thomas born approximately 1760?

Gloucestershire / Capt Anthony GAYLE believed from Gloucs b. ~1663
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 05:22 GMT (UK)  »

    I am interested in a sea-captain named Anthony GAYLE, born around 1663, believed to hail from Gloucestershire. He may have sailed out of Bristol.

    I have a couple of possible christenings--one (GALE) in Wotton-under-Edge 1664, one (GEYLES) in Mickelton 1661.

    Have no marriage.

    A possible child was buried 23 Oct 1716, St. James, Bristol, father "Capt GALE".

    Can anyone help me out on this one?

    Thanks!  J. Elderfield

Buckinghamshire / Elizabeth PUTNAM, b. abt 1730, Chesham?
« on: Saturday 05 March 11 06:44 GMT (UK)  »
Elizabeth PUTNAM married Herbert CLARKE 15 Jan 1758, Saint Clement Danes, London, England. Herbert was a gentleman and button manufacturer, with homes in Drury Lane, London, and Uxbridge, Middlesex. Elizabeth died in February 1807, aged "76". This would suggest a birth date of around 1730.

This couple had 5 known children: Nathan, Sarah, Elizabeth chr. 1767, Mary chr. 1768, and Francis chr. 1770.

Nathan's burial record in 1765, in Hillingdon churchyard, near Uxbridge, indicates "from Chesham, Buckinghamshire".

The most likely christening for Elizabeth in Chesham is Elizabeth PUTNAM born 24 Oct 1724, of Bottom Lane, Chesham. She was christened with four other siblings on 17 June 1733 at St Mary's, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England.

The parents were William and Mary PUTNAM. William was married at Chesham on 02 Oct.1720 to Mary BARNS (or BARNES).  A fellow researcher went to Aylesbury hoping for more info but drew a blank.

We who are researching CLARKE descendants hope that this Elizabeth PUTNAM is 'ours', despite the ~6-year discrepancy of birth date, and the tenuous connection to Chesham. Does anyone else have information on this PUTNAM family?

London and Middlesex / Herbert CLARKE, Button Manufacturer, died 1808
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 22:46 GMT (UK)  »
For the moment, this "gentleman" is a dead end.

I know from his will that Herbert CLARKE had a brother Jonas, a sister Elizabeth HARPER, both dead by March 1807. He had a wife Elizabeth (presumably PUTNAM, married 15 Jan 1758 in St. Clement Danes), also dead by March 1807.

His children were:
Sarah, married Thomas KING 1795, cheesemonger (some of their descendants are known);
Mary chr. 1768, married Thomas BENSLEY jr., printer (descendants known);
probably Elizabeth 1767 and  Francis 1770;
and perhaps others.

I know he was a manufacturer of buttons, and lived in Drury Lane, London. He died wealthy, had a house in Uxbridge, and asked to be buried in Hillingdon.

From London Lives I know the name of one of his servants, the way he voted, and how much he insured his houses for. I have quite a lot more details, BUT...

what I don't know is who his parents were, and when and where he was born.

Herbert was an uncommon name in the 1700s, so may be a family surname.

Any other descendants out there, who might have more information? Or any thoughts of how/where to search next? (I'm in rural Canada.)

Carmarthenshire / William HUGH mar. Rebecca / Rebekah pre 1750
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm seeking the marriage of a William HUGH (or variant, HUGHS, HUGHES etc.) to a Rebecca or Rebekah before 1752.

This couple had children christened in Loughor GLA in 1752, 1759, 1762, 1774 (thanks, Glamorganshire FHS).

No marriage has yet been found. Perhaps across the river in Carmarthenshire?

The gaps between christenings suggest there may have been other children christened elsewhere. Maybe Carmarthenshire?

Any help or suggestions appreciated--
