« on: Thursday 11 April 24 19:27 BST (UK)  »
I have a beautiful RFA silk postcard which I would love to get back to the descendants of Cpl W. Briggs. Sadly I can't find out about him. Can anyone help me please?

The Common Room / Any ideas where my ancestor's picture was published?
« on: Friday 16 February 24 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
Years ago I was sent poor quality line engraved picture of my ancestor John James Thornhill 1764-1857. He was a Cutler and traded from 144 New Bond Street, London.
I have been trying to find out what publication it appeared in ever since in the hope that I can obtain a copy in context.
Any help or ideas where to look would be most welcome, or maybe someone can succeed where I have failed!
The business was taken over by his son Walter when he retired, and was a supplier of chatelaines and other goods to Queen Victoria.

Europe / Seeking information about Ernst Albert Herrmann Panzer
« on: Thursday 15 February 24 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking any further information about my Grandfather Ernst Albert Herrmann Panzer b.1.Jul.1898   d.15 Jul 1964.   He was a High Court Appeal Judge. He married Wilhelma Johanna Lina Hjort on 15 Jul 1924 in Kiel. I have been told that he spent part of WW2 in a hard labour camp for refusing to support "the Party". Places he may have lived include Berlin, Kiel, Hannover and Celle. I have no idea where he practiced, nor do I have any documented evidence of his incarceration in a labour camp.
I feel certain that he must be mentioned somewhere in the German archives, perhaps an obituary or judiciary records. (I do have all the family members and dates).
Any help or pointers would be most welcome.

England / Is there an an archive source for Licenced Victuallers, Publicans?
« on: Tuesday 11 July 23 11:58 BST (UK)  »
I have several Licenced Victuallers or Pub Landlords in my tree and although I know most of the pub names and locations, I would love to be able to find out more about when my ancestors ran these premises. Directories either don't exist or the information is very sparse. Does anyone have any pointers for research please?

For years I have been facing a brick wall with my German ancestors. I have had help from elderly relatives but am now stuck. In particular I would like to extend Johanna Marie Caroline Tiedt's line back at least another generation. Can anyone please help?

Armed Forces / Seeking information about a Beefeater!
« on: Wednesday 19 April 23 21:03 BST (UK)  »
My wife's 2x Great Grandfather was a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London between 1859 and 1863 and his regiment is listed as 12DG in " The Alphabetical List of Yeoman Warders." Unfortunately, we have very little information to go on. His name was William Jordan and he had a daughter called Maria Ann who was born in about 1842. She married John Howell Gale who was a Head teacher on 22 Jan 1862 they and had nine children.

We can't find Williams wife or parents, or anything to do with his service record. We also have no dates for him. Also, what was 12DG?

Can any of the experts on here please help?

Our fingers are well and truly crossed.

The Common Room / Whatever happened to Grandpa's grave?
« on: Monday 27 March 23 19:43 BST (UK)  »
My 3rd Great-grandfather and his son were fairly respected with their cutlery business in New Bond Street London. The family were fairly wealthy in Victorian times so I expected to be able to find a record of last resting places, possibly with a stone giving family details.  However try as I may, this information has eluded me. His name was John James Thornhill 1764-1847 (D. St. George's, Hannover Square, London). His son inherited the business and supplied Queen Victoria and the Royal family. He was Walter Thornhill 1807-1887. Where were they buried? HELP!!!

The Common Room / A Massive Thank You
« on: Thursday 23 March 23 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
A massive thank you to all those who have helped out on here over the years.
I am probably guilty of not acknowledging all the messages and offers of help that this wonderful site has given me and so if I have missed anyone I apologise unreservedly! I do always try to say thank you at the time, but life sometimes gets in the way and research suffers.
After several false starts caused by the aforementioned "LIFE", I seem now to be back and attempting to pick up the threads of thirty odd years of FH. Thank the Lord that I kept pretty good records, because my brain certainly didn't! Re-reading all the threads and messages attached to my past posts has kept me very busy, and has triggered this latest post!
Now I've officially retired, I have moved my PC to the front room so that my lovely 2nd wife gets to see me rather more often than my dear departed 1st one. It also means that I can delve back into the past, occasionally doing a bit of research on her behalf to keep her on side too!
Once again, THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!  ;D ;D ;D
