Cumberland Lookup Requests / Richard Fearon JACKSON m Mary STEEL(E)?
« on: Friday 15 March 24 01:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks

I found Richard in the England Wales Civil Register of Marriages 1837-1915.

Wigton, 10b, 679, 1st quarter, 1884

There are 3 women that appear on that register page.  One I have eliminated as the incorrect first name.

That leaves 2, that may or may not be the same person:
STEEL Mary or STEELE Mary.

I would like to confirm which is the correct surname spelling and if possible when she was born, and who her parents are please.

I have looked on Find My Past (Banns, England, 1884 | Cumberland Marriages, 1884), Ancestry, and British Newspaper Archive but nothing other than that Civil registration appears to show up and one article that suggests he was from Aspatria.

I am wondering if there are offline resources someone may have that would solve this 10-month mystery.

Thank you.

Use PhpGedView and love it.

However from time to time I'd like to custom print (A3, A2, A1) a circle diagram with name, birth-death dates, (possibly location, occupations) etc for 5+ generations to give away as gifts to others; and I'd like a graphic that is a bit more flexible and scalable.

What recommendations would you have for an svg (or possibly a PDF/A) output, stand-alone, free programme that can run on multi-platform (Linux / Web server)?

I am not keen to upload snippets to third party websites online, and would like the option of choosing colours, details, generations, positioning, titles, etc myself.

Thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Child maintenance??
« on: Tuesday 21 January 20 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Would very much appreciate a discussion and advice about the following scenarios.....in the hope I can make sense of them.

CONTEXT: 1920s, 1930s, 1940s; New Zealand

SITUATION 1: A person of interest was made to pay maintenance (for 4 children) for what appears to be at least until the youngest of 4 children reached 16, despite that child a) having been fostered as a baby/toddler then b) being put into an orphanage, then c) being fostered again, and finally d) going home for a year when she was 16 when her step-father found out about her and her 3 other siblings; but leaving as she didn't get on with the mother or step-father, and marrying at 19.  Maintenance was still being saught when the eldest child of 4 was aged 17years.

SITUATION 2: An entry in the Police Gazette stated a person was due to pay maintenance to the Education department for a child who was around 13 years old at that time.  He was interviewed.  There were no other entries found prior or after that specifically relating to that named child.

SITUATION 3: A person was required to pay maintenance for at least a decade after his ex-wife re-married, even though she was in a relationship with another man and had children by this second male long prior to her 2nd marriage.

SITUATION 4: A person with 3 children to a previous marriage/relationship was only to pay for the youngest child who was 16 at the time and not the other older 2.  9 years later he files for divorce under the desertion option.

QUESTIONS:

How long did a parent have to pay maintenance for a child or children and how much was it?  Until the child was 18?  For all of the children until the youngest was 18?  Until the child left home?  Until the child left school?  Until the child got married?

If a child or children were put into orphanage care by the mother, was the father still liable for maintenance?  Did the amount change?

If the mother of the children married or started a new relationship was the father still liable for maintenance?

Are there actual documents that state how much a person was paying and for how many children?

Is there a court file or anything that had to prove the parentage?

You've read this far ... phew, thanks.  I look forward to the replies.  ;D

New Zealand Completed Requests / Birth at sea
« on: Saturday 11 May 19 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Seeing the post Death aT Sea https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=812695.0, made me wonder ...

...when there is a birth at sea, where is it genealogically accurate to record that the person was actually born?

The departure port, or arrival destination, or simply 'At sea', or the country the ship was closest too?  Or do you look at the parents and take their country of birth/departure?  So many options!

Look forward to your chiming in  ;)

Europe / Shipping record from Germany to New Zealand
« on: Friday 27 October 17 20:28 BST (UK)  »
Moin alle,

I posted on the NZ board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=781442
trying to find the emmigration/immigration of a Jakob GUCKERT from Germany to NZ around 1862.

It was suggested that SKS here in the Europe board might know of another resource available at the German end where I could search please.

Thanks
Twiggy

New Zealand Completed Requests / Shipping record from Germany to New Zealand
« on: Friday 27 October 17 07:52 BST (UK)  »
Ok, I am throwing my hands up in the air and would rather be looking at a stereogram.

I have a Jakob GUCKERT who immigrated to New Zealand around 1862 according to his death record but I haven't been able to find his passage.

I have looked at the German shipping/archive database (HADIS) for the area that he was born but that only shows some of his relatives leaving for the USA some years later.

I looked at the Family Search shipping database for New Zealand but can't seem to find him under any permutations of his name.

The fellow was based in and around the Nelson area so this is a probable port of destination.

What other resources are there for this time period?
I did find a list of ships but no individualised lists: http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-nz2.htm

Are you able to help me find this man please?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / One word in Sütterlin (German)
« on: Friday 10 February 17 17:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that this word on the second line means something similar to 'ausgewandert'.

The first line I believe is '30 Jahre alt'.

Below are the signatures of the registrars.

Europe / DE -> Auswanderung -> NZ : GUCKERT
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 10:02 GMT (UK)  »
Moin,

I need help with emigration ex Germany, as I have tried all the resources I know about.

I have a Jacob GUCKERT, born in Guntersblum in 1832; who can only be documented as having arrived in New Zealand approx 1862.

A search of the Hesse regional database (Hadis) shows some cousins emigrating to the US in 1867.

[A flick through the BW Auswanderungs website nets one result but likely accounted for in the US.]

I have looked at the Hamburg passenger lists online.

I searched Familysearch.

I have looked through the Guntersblum church books but nothing is noted.

Where else might I find this person's emigration record please?
