The Lighter Side / Ancestry or any other one
« on: Monday 17 October 11 13:22 BST (UK)  »
To cut a long story short.
I have been researching my ancestors for a number of years but due to work and family life i have not researched for a number of years now roughly 5 or 6 so my tree is all over the place. Who, where, when etc etc. So i was thinking of getting back on track and was wandering to sign up to one of these genealogy sites were you pay a subscription to view their records.
Now i can go back to around 1850 on my Fathers side and then i suspect my ancestors came from Ireland so would need access to Irish records not sure weather it was southern or Northern Ireland.
I can go back to my Mothers side to around 1820s [i think. As i said it is all over the place at the moment] so i would need access to baptisms if there are such records available on line.
So i was wandering which would be the best site to sign up to for around 6 months Ancestry and Genes re united are allways pestering me or are there any other ones that would be more suitable for my researching.
Sorry if i have posted on the wrong place.

The Common Room / Why no headstone
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone.
I have made contact with my late Mothers cousin and we have been sharing information about our family tree. My Mothers cousin kindly went to Hull history centre and sought information about where my G. Granddad and G.Grandma where buried.[ They are in the same plot] He visited the cemetery and got the plot number of where my g.grandparents where buried. They died within 6 months of each other in 1940. The cemetery guide showed where the plot is and to be honest you would never know you were stud on a grave. No headstone nothing. My friend's wife found an old plastic vase stuck it into the ground and we left flowers.

It does seem strange that no headstone or any other monument were present.
My wife came up with an explanation saying it maybe because they died when the war was on and no stone masons where available. another person said it may have been vandalised. I also thought it maybe that they died broke and could not afford a monument but surly even a poper gets some monument. It's as if they did not exists
Has anyone any idea

Lincolnshire / Quebec cottages.New Holland
« on: Saturday 11 December 10 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
My Grandma was born in Barrow upon Humber in c1910 at Quebec cottages in barrow upon Humber or New holland.
From Google maps they seem to be still there what looks like a large brick yard just before the cottage's.
My G.Granddad was a brickyard worker who lived at these cottages when my Grandma was born. I was trying to find a little history about the cottage's eg when they were built, how many and were the owners or tenants of the cottage's brickyard workers and are they still used as homes.
I have been an various sites but cannot find any information about them. Any one with any information would be appreciated.
Regards.

Census and Resource Discussion / best value subscriptions
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 17:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm thinking of subscribing to one of the on line sites so i can gain access to census records. Can anyone tell me the best ones for value and maybe any if any i should avoid. I have only looked at Ancestry and one other.  But i think if i remember correctly it's around £80 odd per annum which is quite a lot of money for me.

I noticed one on the Genealogist where you can buy credits lasting a month or so but do these credits roll over?

Thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / 1911 census
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

excuse my ignorance but i have had a long time break from my searching, around 2 years but I'm thinking of getting up and running again all be it a little rusty.

Anyway i have just been on find my past site and i saw an advert about how one can subscribe to the 1911 census. Now I'm puzzled are census's kept secret for 100 years. If so the 1911 should be out in 2011.

Can anyone shed any light on this.

« on: Sunday 30 August 09 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if Russell st, Bingley still exists. My Wifes g grandfather lived at number 15 in 1881. I suppose it's long gone now but was just wandering what the houses were like. IE back to back or were they more grand and are still standing to this day.

Hi Everyone.

I'm trying to find old photographs of Spivey st Hodgeson st befor New Cleveland st was built.

Those of you who know the area will probably know the said streets went right across what is now New Cleveland st before it was built now Hodgeson st and Spivey st are cut in two by New Cleveland st.

Phew, hope you understand that and can help me in directing me to any web sites.

Kind Regards.
