Lancashire / William Fitzgerald born 1857 Manchester.
« on: Tuesday 22 October 19 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a William Fitzgerald born 28th April 1857 to parents William and Elizabeth nee Marsh. They lived in Manchester. He had a sister called Elizabeth who was born 1854. William's father died when he was around four years old and in 1861 he is living with his widowed mother.
He is difficult to locate but does marry Clara Crawford on the 3rd March 1878 in Ancoats. It was not a good marriage and when Clara his wife died  after 1891 all the children except one supposed mystery son unable to locate went to live with their Uncle James Fitzgerald and are with him in 1901.
The children never have any contact with their father again after this and no one knows what happened to him after 1901.
Information I have is as follows: He is 33 in 1891 and living with Clara in Newton, Lancashire with children Clara aged 10, Elizabeth aged 8, Alice aged 4 and Gertrude  aged 2.  William their father listed as widowed and a boarder living in the home of George Entwistle in Manchester. He is listed as a Fireman- Stationary Engine Driver. That is the last time he is located and there is no sign of him after this point. Does anyone have any idea where he went or when or if he died please as all his family never knew what happened to him. They were told that they had been abandoned by him and he was no good. They would love to find him but have not been able to locate anything at all after 1901. Thank you for any information.

Lancashire / John Sharples- Totally Stuck on marriage!
« on: Wednesday 18 September 19 12:40 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage of a John Sharples born 1804 to William and Esther Sharples of Tong.
He is married to Ann born 1794 and ten years older than her husband and have children James born 1827 and baptised at Saint Peter, Bolton Le Moors and Esther born 1835 and baptised at the same church. What stumps me is the only marriage I can find is one of John Sharples at Saint Peter, Bolton Le Moors to an Ann Crompton  both listed as widowed. It is possible for Ann to be widowed because of her age but John is only 21 when he marries her and it is less likely though not impossible is it? I am certain that this is the right John Sharples in my family but I am very unsure this is the right marriage. I am unable to find a marriage and a death of a first wife before 1825. The year range is narrow and I have searched endlessly to find one to match. On top of this Ann says she is widowed and I have no idea of her maiden name or a death of her first husband let alone his name. So can anyone help me please to sort this out?
Thank you.

Lancashire / Sharples 1700- 1800 Bolton Le Moors
« on: Thursday 29 August 19 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage for the parents of John Sharples born 1759 in Tong. It clearly states his parents live in Tong and they are James and Mary. I found a marriage for a James Sharples and a Mary Clough  dating the 3rd January 1749/50. This seemed okay but then I was unsure because when I looked for other children the date of some them mean't Mary would have had her last child Betty in 1771 and that would mean Mary was 52 when she had her and I know this is not impossible. Mary Clough is born 1719 and her husband James is born 1724. I have their dates of death but I am bothered by the children and her age of childbirth- Ann- 1753, Jonas- 1756, James- 1757, John- 1759, James- 1763, Richard, 1768 and Betty 1771. They are all baptised at Saint Peter, Bolton Le Moors and if I get this right I can go back definetively another 100 years plus but it is the ages of the children and Marys age when shee has some of them that bothers me. Can anyone help please?

Lancashire / Hibbert family before 1740- Bolton, Lancashire
« on: Wednesday 14 August 19 13:28 BST (UK)  »
I am really stuck and have hit a brick wall. I have managed to go back to the late 1700s on The Hibbert Family Tree but cannot go further back than this. I know its a big ask but I am trying to find a Thomas Hibberts family before 1742. He is born in the Bolton area around this time and he marries Martha Wright on the 23rd June 1767 at Saint Mary, Deane, Bolton, Lancashire. They have four children- William born 1768, Thomas 1770, Susannah 1772 who I have located further on and her daughter and Martha 1774. They are listed as Hubbard at Saint Katherines, Blackrod, Bolton in Parish Records. Their mother dies in 1777 and Thomas marries again of which I have been able to go a lot further. The flummox comes what happened to Thomas born 1770, William born 1768 and Martha born 1774. I cannot find them. Who is their fathers father? That is Thomas Hibbert born 1742. I know he has a brother 1738 called John and I have located him but not his baptism record due to old wills naming his brother as an executor.  Who is Martha Wrights parents born 1738- 1777? I know its a big ask but I would love to go back even further and I would be grateful for any help! Than you.

Lancashire / Kathleen G Grunner- born 1921- Liverpool
« on: Thursday 28 September 17 10:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out what happened to a Kathleen G Grunner born in 1921 in Liverpool, Lancashire around the March time I believe. Her mother was Margaret Honoria Grunner born 1896 in Whitchurch, Shropshire.
Margaret seemed to have lived with her grandparents until she went into service in Liverpool. She died in the workhouse in 1926 but interestingly left a small amount of money to someone not related to her at all. I do not know whether she was working there at this point or she was a resident there. It was around £7.00. Although Kathleen was born in the Workhouse after this it draws a blank and I have reached a dead end after looking at endless records. I would love to know what happened to her. I did wonder if she had been privately adopted, name changed and that was it so nobody ever would know but is this too far fetched? Has anybody got any more ideas please? Thank you.

Lancashire / Mary Jane and Amy Candless- Burneley 1911. Where did they go?
« on: Thursday 14 September 17 12:41 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to solve a difficult surname and a family secret which I have only recently discovered in a probate record from 1936. I am trying to locate a Mary Jane Candless born 1881 in Shropshire to Mary Ann Poole born 1857 in Woodeaves, Shropshire. I have followed Mary Jane Candless to 1901 where she is working for a John and Emily Hargreaves at the Grove, Edgmond, Shropshire then she completely disappears. In February 1911 she gives birth to a daughter called Amy Candlass in Burnley. Amy is listed as a nursling in 1911 living with Ellis and Maud Hargeaves at 101 Todmorden Road aged 2 months old. Interestingly there is a Mary Jane Candless also living in Burnley born 1881 claiming she is born in Glasgow working for a John Rycroft at 58 Saint James Street. She is listed as a Cook. I am pretty certain it is her and the place of birth could be a mistake?? Then there is no sign of them. Then in 1936 Amy's Aunt Esther born 1871 in Market Drayton, Shropshire who was a Poole but now married and has the name Darbyshire dies in Mill Green, Hinstock and leaves her probate to Amy Candlass. Esther dies on the 26th March 1936 leaving £125, 04s. Yet despite this I cannot locate Amy or her mother at all after 1911. I would love to find out what happened to them as I did not know about Amy at all. The surname Candless is also listed as Candlass and Candlish so it does varies in surname hence the problems. Can anyone help please. Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Arthur Gibson Beardsworth World War One
« on: Friday 21 October 16 18:36 BST (UK)  »
I have a bit of a conundrum and I wonder if someone could be able to explain it further please. Arthur Gibson Beardsworth was born in in 1892 in Oswaldwistle, Lancashire to Arthur W Beardsworth and Sarah Ann Price. I know where he is in 1911. It is his First World War Records that intrigue me. He was killed in action on the 11th November 1914. He served in The 2nd West Riding Regiment. He was a Private. His number was 9686. There is a record about his soldiers effects with limited information but nothing exists anywhere else that I am able to find. I have tried the Commonwealth Graves Commission but to no avail which is odd if he was killed in action.
I have tried various historical sites but with little success.
Could someone help please as I would like to know where he died if possible.
Thank you.

Lancashire / John Bolton(Haslam) and Sarah Sharples-where are they after 1851?
« on: Monday 15 August 16 11:15 BST (UK)  »
I am stuck with a capital S. I am trying to find Sarah Sharples born in 1819 to William Sharples and Esther Horrocks in Bolton after 1851. Her father was a Crofter.
She married John Haslam on the 4th February 1839 in Bolton. He was a Bachelor and Millwright and listed as illegitimate.
Sarah is listed as a minor, spinster and daughter of William Sharples- Crofter.
In 1841 she is listed as Sarah Bolton, not Haslam and is the wife of John Bolton- Millwright and living at Squint Lane, Bolton Le Moors with daughter Hannah, 2 months. Son Daniel born 1839 is living with grandparents William and Esther Sharples and is listed as aged 2.
In 1851 John and Sarah are listed as living at 8 Gas Street, Bolton and again John is listed as a Millwright. They have 6 children listed in 1851 - Daniel baptised as Bolton- born 1839, Hannah born 1841 but was also known as Haslam, Ada Bolton born 1841 I believe, Emma born 1842 approx. but also listed with two surnames, baptised as Haslam but surname Bolton in 1851, Samuel born 1847 and William born 1850.
John Bolton's mother probably married later and John took his step fathers surname but on the marriage had to give his illegitimate surname hence the confusion I am presuming.
Can anyone help me find this family after 1851 please as I am struggling after this point.
Thank You.
