Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / WHAT DOES THIS MEAN...PLEASE HELP!
« on: Saturday 18 June 05 11:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have come into precession of this document and i am not sure what it means and how i can research it further.

It says (sorry this is long).....

TO THE CONSTABLE OF GUISBOURGH IN  THE SAID RIDING.

By virtue of my Office, These are in Her Majesty's Name to charge and command You, that on sight hereof, You summon and warn twenty-four able and sufficient Men of your Constabulary, and the next three adjoining, personally to appear before me, on WEDNESDAY the 29TH day of JANUARY instant, at THREE O'CLOCK in the afternoon, at the House of Herman Howourghth (may be incorrect name as difficult to read) in the said Township and Liberty, then and there to do and execute all such things as shall be given them in charge, on the behalf of our Sovereign Lady the Queen's Majesty, touching the death of WILLIAM KITCHING.  And for so doing this is your Warrant.  And you are likewise required to summon the Witnesses in this Case, that the Queen's Service be not neglected; and futher to do and execute such other Matters as shall be then and there enjoined you; and have you then and there this Warrant.  Fail not herein at your Peril.

Given under my Hand and Seal, the 28th day of January 1847.
Signed the Deputy Coroner.

As you can see the oldie worlde language is a bit confusing.  William Kitching was my great great great great grandfather and he was married to Amelia Milburn.  He was born in 1803 in York.  Can i presume from this document that he was murdered , where can i find out more, any suggestions ?

Thanks you

Michelle

Staffordshire / HUMPHRIES / MILLS of Hamstead
« on: Friday 15 April 05 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone help me with this.#

I am looking for my great great grandparents,

HENRY WALTER HUMPHRIES Born c1867 ? place but according to 1891 and 1901 census he was born in Yardley, Warwickshire although i cannot find evidence of this prior to 1889.

He married HANNAH MILLS in 1889.   She was born in Tipton, Staffs in 1868.   I have just sent for her Birth cert, i have her on  1881,1891, 1901 census.  Hannahs father was a coal miner named Joseph.

Problem i have is i cannot find Henry on 1881 census due to Humphries being a common name and i cannot find any Henry Humphries born in Yardley.  Also i cannot find any Birth records for this man so i am unable to send for his birth certificate.

I believe that Henrys father was also called Henry and a bricklayer (according to his marriage cert).  Henry (my one) was a miner at Hamstead colliery.

Can any of you brainy and much more experienced lot help me find a solution for this , i am very frustrated with this very thick brickwall (maybe Henrys father built it? ha ha)

Staffordshire / Help i need to find an orphan
« on: Monday 11 April 05 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

Please help,

I have just found out that an ancestor i have been trying to trace is an orphan!  Her name was MARY ANN STOKES and was born in west bromwich in 1870 (+/- 1).  I think i may have found her on the 1881 census at wigmore school in walsall but how should i try to trace her prior to this.

Her father was named WILLIAM i believe and i am not certain of any other details.  Does anyone know if orphans were registered anywhere? ???

Sorry if i appear dumb :P have been doing this for 5 yrs but have not had an orphan in my tree until now.  I suspect this may make tracing my linage more difficult, and don't want to trace the wrong folks.....been there done that!!! >:(

I would be grateful for any help all you experience folk can give me,

Michelle x

Dorset / ROBERTS
« on: Monday 28 March 05 15:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anybody help?
I am looking for any info regarding my great grandfather and his family.  His name was HENRY GEORGE ROBERTS and he was born in Werham, Dorset circa 1890.  I think his father was called Walter and his mother Mary.  I believe he was a farmer then later he became a painter and decorator and also owned a guest house with his wife, Maria in Swanage.  He also served in the Navy during WW1 and sailed to Russia.

I am totally stuck as there are now very few living relatives and i am not having any luck with the census'.  All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Michelle :)

Hi

My great great grandfather and his brother in law were identified as coachpainter's on the 1901 census.  Silly question but what exactly did they do, did they paint coaches, buses, trains, carriages etc and was this decorative and artistic painting or not so fancy??

Thanks
