Armed Forces / KOYLI, Mau Mau any info on Pte H Gill
« on: Thursday 07 December 23 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I know this is a long shot.  I'm doing some research for the brother of Harry Gill b 1928 Castleford, Yorkshire who joined the K.O.L.I.  after WW2 and was in Kenya for the Mau Mau uprising/emergency.  Apparently he saved the lives of 8 soldiers whilst fighting in the jungle.

The brother knows nothing about this and I'm trying to piece together what I can for a little family history story for his 80th birthday.  His brother Harry died in 2003 and he has lost touch with any remaining family.  We don't know Army number or Battalion.

I can look up Mau Mau general info on Google so anything else you can add or point me to would be wonderful.

Thank you!

« on: Monday 20 November 23 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
I've attached a snip of my Uncles Service paper.  (Also the location 'St. Anne's?). I've searched/asked on WW2 Talk but can't find anything.

Can anyone help?  Thanks very much.

World War Two / WW2 1944 100th General Hospital
« on: Tuesday 24 October 23 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone tell me if the 100th General Hospital was in France at Bar-le-Duc in October 1944?

My Uncle was sent there after escaping from Italy on 30th October 1944.  His papers say "100th Gen Hosp C.M."

As I understand it this hospital was an American one?

He was then transferred to 64 Gen Hosp and then  100 BR Gen Hosp. (same hospital as above?).

Thank you.

World War One / Military medal and bar - how to find out why awarded?
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 11:52 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if there is a source I can go to look up how an ancestor might have won his Military Medal and Bar?

Sadly his Service papers don't appear to have survived and his medal roll cards don't say.

Thank you.

World War Two / Why Territorial Army?
« on: Saturday 22 July 23 14:10 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could explain to me why the 31st (City of London Regiment) Anti Aircraft Battalion Royal Engineers (TA) was TA, eventually becoming the 123rd (City of London Rifles) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA (TA).  My Uncle joined in March 1938, aged 16.

I've been told by the family he was not in the Territorial Army?  But of course his papers say otherwise.  I can't find anything online that explains why the Battalion was designated TA.

I'd like to be able to explain clearly why it says TA.

Thank you!

World War Two / 1941 Operation Crusader wounded - Casualty Clearing Stations
« on: Sunday 25 June 23 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone kindly tell me where it is most likely a wounded man from 8th Royal Tank Regiment as part of 13 Corps and 1st Armoured Division might have been taken?  Looking at 8th December 1941.

Was there a CCS?  If so where?
Would he have been sent to a Hospital ship or back to Alexandria?

Would be great to get an idea of what happened.

Many thanks.

World War Two / Royal Tank Corps 1937, 1st Light Tank, Waziristan, India
« on: Tuesday 13 June 23 15:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'd be grateful if anyone can help or point me in the direction for more information.

My Uncle Bill Loftus RTC (RTR) was 20 when he sailed to Karachi on 11th November 1937 as a Private with the 1st Light Tank Company.  (He'd just finished his training at, I guess, Bovington.  I'm guessing also he went to Raznak Camp for duties re Waziristan campaign, but would like to know.  There may have been several camps.

Bill was there until 31st March 1939.  He passed his trade test as a driver in May 1938.

Would he have driven a Vickers Mk VI?
Any idea what the 1st Lt Tank's role was out there?
Did 1st Lt Tank go to Peshawar?

Any information would be great, thank you!

World War Two / Help deciphering WW2 Svs Record
« on: Friday 21 April 23 13:02 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone kindly help me with attached?

It is hard to understand how my Uncle spent the War as there are a number of abbreviations and statements I cannot fathom.

I see he attested as a 16 year old lad into the TA, joining the 31st Royal Engineers in March 1938 and then called to Military Service in September that year.  Who with?

How come he stayed in UK for the whole of the War?
What does admitted to RMP Lingfield mean?
Was he posted to the Royal Artillery and then moved back to REME?

Generally I would be grateful if anyone can explain the attached to me.

Thanks so much.
(I might have to post the other 2 images separately.
