New Zealand Completed Requests / Does Anyone Know Where This Place Is?
« on: Monday 24 April 23 03:00 BST (UK)  »
Don't know if this is the right board for this, if not can someone suggest another.
This is the back of a postcard sent in 1947 by Jack KING to his half brother in NZ. He was born in 1928 so only aged 19. He seems to be in an Airforce shirt.  After being where ever this was taken he didn't return to NZ but was heard from in Bundaberg. Have a death in QLD 1984/365 - 31/12/1983. Will try the QLD board later to search for more information on his life.
Does anyone know, or can hazard a guess what country this studio was located in? (Mr.G was no help)

Dorset / Searching for a John Northover READ (one of many)
« on: Tuesday 28 September 21 02:12 BST (UK)  »
There are quite a few John Northover READs in Dorset, but the one I am searching for was baptised 19 Aug 1846 in the parish of Portland in the county of Dorset.  Parents John Northover READ and Ann Chaddock nee PEARCE. Married 1845. He had two sisters Ann Northover READ 1852 Catherine Augusta READ 1860.
He is with his parents at the Chesil New Hotel Portland on the 1871 census Occ. Baker age 24 and on 1881 Census as a Baker aged 30 and after that haven’t been able to track him down.
I think the following dates are correct but always welcome any help offered.
His father c1812 died 1889 M Quarter in Weymouth age 72= c1817.  His mother, c1818 died 1900 S Quarter 01D 758 Woolwich London age 82= c1818. It seems that after her husband died she went to live with her younger daughter Catherine Augusta Penny READ c1860-1945 who married, in 1883, Thomas Francis DENNY c1858-1929.
On 1891 census London, St Mary, Waterloo Road First, District 3. Thomas DENNY, Catherine 31 and Ann 73 (transcribed as Ana).
Ann, his sister, married John Thomas ATTWOOLL and emigrated to NZ in 1874.
Just to confuse things this is another John Northover READ born about the same time.
John Northover READ c1847. Married to Elizabeth. 1891 census Occ. Sawyer, 5 Children.  MMS BUNGAY.
1899 Jno. READ Admitted to Dorset County Asylum, Occ. Wood sawyer.
1901 Elizabeth Head M.
1911 John still in Asylum. Died 1 Jun 1913. About 66.
As well as his father, there is another John Northover READ running a hotel. From the 1865 edition of UK, City and County Directories, 1766-1946
READ John Northover, Prince of Wales hotel, Fortune’s well
READ J. Northover, New hotel, Chiswell.
Any clue to his whereabouts after the 1881 census would be much appreciated.
Thank you
HeatherR.

There is a marriage in Norwich 1901 of a J.N.READ to Elizabeth and have had a query on that board, here is the link, hope it works. Birth date and place of birth similar.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=853492.msg7214814#msg7214814

Have requested the marriage cert. to see if that held any useful information, Father’s Name and Profession would be nice.

Norfolk / Searching for Marriage Record of John Northover READ
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 03:08 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for a John Northover READ (quite a few of them around) born c1846 Portland Dorset, who has disappeared after the 1881 census when he was living with his parents at the Chesil New Hotel Portland Dorset age 30. Occ. Baker. On the 1871 census age was given as 24.
On the 1911 census a John Northover READ, born Portland Dorset, age 69 is living at 47 Grimsby St Norwich. Occ. Dealer in Work of Art. Married to Elizabeth also 69 for 15 years.  Giving a birth year c1842 and marriage year about 1896.
So far have not found them on the 1901 census or anything about Elizabeth before this marriage.
There is a marriage on Family Search for Elizabeth HALSE and John READ at Norwich St Helen, Norfolk England.
FHL Film Number: 1565303 and also another with a Record Number of 23145 which shows
John Read Principal England, Norfolk, Parish Registers (County Record office), 1510-1997
residence: October 0009 St Helen  Spouse: Elizabeth Halse
marriage:  October 0009 Norwich St Helen, Norfolk England
Can anyone explain what October 0009 means??
I haven’t been able to find this marriage on FreeBMD or A’try so cannot order the Certificate to see if this is the correct John Northover READ.
Any help to track down this marriage record to help prove or not that this is the elusive John would be much appreciated.
Will also post a query on the Dorset board to ask for assistance and cross link the posts when done.
Thank you
HeatherR

New Zealand Completed Requests / Missing birth of Joseph TATTERSALL
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 22:29 BST (UK)  »
I have had no success finding the birth of Joseph Cochrane TATTERSALL. F. Lawrence (Laurence on some of the births) M. Sarah Hannah nee COCHRANE
He died 29 Jun 1953 aged 89. From an on line tree birth given as 12 Aug 1863.
There is a gap in the family NZ Birth registrations between1862-1866 and thought maybe they went to Australia so have tried some Australian records with nothing found.
Thank you
HeatherR

There is a marble plaque on the Childers Road wall commemorating the Gisborne men who fought in the South African (Boer) War. Will attach an article about the history and have got a blurry photo of the whole plaque. I think I can see the names of the two family members. Sergeant W TAYLOR, top right, and Trooper F PARKER, middle bottom. So if any one is able to take a clear photgraph it would be much appreciated.

ps Have emailed the RSA to see if they could help, but haven't heard back from them.

This is probably a wild goose chase and probably almost impossible to solve, but here goes.
I am trying to track the life of Mordecai/Marcus HYMAN c1751-1846.  The signature is from an 1803 Petition from Prisoners in King's bench Prison and the others from Account Books when he was an Apothecary and Surgeon of Chatham and Rochester.
I have taken a smallish sample from 4 papers and hope they aren't too big to attach properly.
Any help would be much appreciated.

London and Middlesex / King's Bench Court and Prison. Help Needed.
« on: Saturday 11 July 20 03:18 BST (UK)  »
In the “Ipswich Journal” dated 30 (cor.) Dec 1797 an article reports that Mordecai HYMAN was found guilty of “Bribing a Customs Officer”.  I haven’t been able to find the sentence.
Extract from a “King’s Bench and Fleet Prison Discharge Book and Prisoner Lists” Committed 8 Feb 1798. Discharged 1801.
London Gazette 1801 28 Jul, I think, page 941, First notice of him being back in King’s Bench Prison. Also a second and third notice at later times.
1803 June 28 Petition for Pardon from 389 men and women imprisoned for debt in the King’s Bench prison. Mordecai HYMAN is among the signatories.
Is there anywhere to find the sentence from 1797?  About three years doesn’t really seem a lot
    for bribing a Customs Officer.
Is it possible that he was released in 1801 and then taken straight back in for debt?
Are there any prison records that would show his age so I can prove that he became Marcus/Mordecai HYMAN, Apothecary and Surgeon of Chatham and Rochester who died 2 Jul 1846 aged 95, and who was declared bankrupt a few more times over the years.
I have some pages from his Apothecary Register 1813, 1814 and 1823 with what appears, to me, to be written by three different hands so will put his signature from 1803 and a selection from the pages onto the handwriting board and see if the experts there can say yes or no there is a likeness.
There are various spellings of HYMAN as Hymans/Hyams/Hayman etc. and deciding whether they are the same person is a bit of a puzzle to solve.
This is a bit of a rambling query but any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
HeatherR

ps.
Just as an extra in Jan 1804 a Patent for the Tonsor Waterless Shaving method was issued to a Marcus HYMANS. A pretty brutal way of shaving going by the list of ingredients, including ground pumice.  I can post a copy of the Patent, including ingredients and method, to any interested people out there.  Same man or not have no idea, but maybe a start to his Apothecary Business.

Technical Help / Can't get Into My Hotmail Account
« on: Monday 06 April 20 08:57 BST (UK)  »
A couple of days ago when I tried to log into my Hotmail Account, on the desktop computer, all I could get was the little blue circle going round and round. Looked on Google, reset the password in case that was the problem, all to no avail, the little blue circle just keeps on going.  On my lap top there is no problem.
Any help, in lay persons terms, would be much appreciated.
 Cheers
HeatherR.

New Zealand Completed Requests / New Zealand Police Gazettes. Elusive Photograph.
« on: Monday 06 January 20 00:59 GMT (UK)  »

Have been trying to find this man’s Prisoners Photograph without success.
AUSSEL Alfred Leonard (sometimes Leonard Alfred)
Record of 1918 shows released from Waikeria 31/5/1918. Trial Date of 1/2/15 Wellington S.C.  Given a 5 year sentence. In the Remarks Column it states he was “Finger Printed. Photographed at Wellington 14/12/14. Released on probationary license”
Have checked 1914 Prisoners Photographs, the last batch issued Dec 2 so just before his photo was taken and 1915 up to the issue of Jul 7.  Have some other police Records for him, but his photo is proving to be quite elusive.
Any ideas on where it may be found would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
HeatherR
