Devon Lookup Requests / George Croscombe Merchant Sea Captain
« on: Thursday 25 September 14 11:36 BST (UK)  »

I have a 3 x gr grandfather called George Croscombe born about 1772. His daughter Sarah born 1793 in Swansea Wales was my 3 x gr grandmother. George was born in Bideford, or Chittlehampton Devon and was a merchant sea captain. He married Mary Lepper (1767) and they had Sarah, William George 1794 and another William George born 1796 (mariner), Jane 1803, Robert 1808 and Mary 1810.

According to other family trees I have seen, George's father/grandfather may have been John Croscombe of Braunton, Devon and his mother/grandmother Mary Bushon of Chittlehampton, Devon. I believe John Croscombe was the son of Edward Croscombe and Mary Berry. I need a link between George and John Croscombe.

Sarah married James Thomas on 28 November 1814 in Swansea, Wales. James Thomas was also a mariner (coastguard).

There was a George christened in Bideford in 1762, the son of Thomas and Sarah Croscombe, but I have it on good authority that this is not my George.

There is a George Croscombe born in Bideford showing up in the 1861 Census as a pensioner at the Royal Hospital Greenwich, aged 89. He could have been my George or George the son of Thomas and Sarah, but being a mariner, it is perhaps not surprising that he would be a pensioner in the Royal Hospital Greenwich.

Please could someone help here - there were a lot of Croscombes in Devon in those days, not helped by the fact that Croscombe is also a place in Devon, so the name can also show up in any general searches as a place.

London and Middlesex / James and Elizabeth - such common names
« on: Friday 25 March 11 03:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have a marriage certificate for my great grandmother Agnes Ada Brown who was married to William John Richardson July 20 1884. I also have a marriage cert for her father, Thomas Cockson Brown who was married to Sophia Thomas December 25 1856, both couples married at St Philip's Church, Bethnal Green, Middlesex. Thomas and Sophias certificate is signed by James Brown (groom's father) and Elizabeth Brown. Sophia's father is called James (Thomas) also. One of William and Ada's witnesses was Ida Henrietta Brown who I know was Agnes's sister.

I am having great difficulty tracking down this couple and have been looking for James Browns possibly married to Elizabeths. I have found one census entry for a James and Elizabeth Brown (his birth place looks like Herefordshire or Hertfordshire and hers is Newport, Isle of Wight.

The trouble is, they are such common names and there are no end of James Browns married to Elizabeths in the Bethnal Green area/London area. It is all very confusing and I hope you can help

Many thanks
Jenny

London and Middlesex / Samuel Feecham m Mary Deverdun and Elizabeth Weaver
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 06:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to track down the origins of Samuel Feecham who married Mary Deverdun on 27 July 1777 in St Leonards Shoreditch.

In some family trees he is recorded to have been born on 29 Oct 1756 in Middletown, Newport, Rhode Island, US and to also have been married to Elizabeth Weaver on 20 Dec 1781 in Middletown, Newport, Rhode Island, USA. He had children to both wives. He is also listed as having died in Middletown, Newport, Rhode Island, USA, but with no date of death.

His father is listed as Samuel Peckham and his mother as Mary? The Peckham family is well researched and their history is recorded (I have not yet been able to access it). These facts appear on quite a few American family trees and up until now I have discounted them, but I am beginning to wonder as I have never been able to find birth or death details for Samuel in English records and nor has anyone else I know. He must have been very busy if all this information is correct. Anyone have any ideas?
