London & Middlesex Resources / St Paul's Church Shadwell and the Joyner family
« on: Monday 05 October 20 17:05 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone familiar with the records for St Paul's, Shadwell in the 1700s? I just wondered how complete or reliable they are.

I have identified (on FindMyPast) three children born to John and Deborah Joyner 1852, 1856 and 1858.  The last was Thomas Joyner an ancestor, but I can find no trace of a marriage for John and Deborah, nor her death. According to Thomas's baptism record John was a Ballastman. He was possibly born 1723 or 1734 in Shadwell but I don't have much to go on other than that - there seem to have been quite a few Joyners working in that trade.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Scotland / Uncertified death
« on: Friday 01 February 19 17:06 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with a slightly mysterious death?

My great-great grandfather James Murphy's death was registered on 17 May 1875. The entry in the register says that he died aged 33 years on 15 May 1875 at 7.30am in Linthouse Shipbuilding yard Govan. The cause of death is given as "Unknown" (in quotes). It also notes that he died suddenly and then where it would normally say 'as certified by', it says 'Not Certified'.

Has anyone seen anything similar? Does it mean there might have been an industrial accident or could it have been natural causes? Shouldn't there have been an inquiry?

Any thoughts welcome!

Renfrewshire / Death of Marion McInnes 1861-1871
« on: Saturday 06 October 18 17:20 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me trace a death that must have occurred between the 1861 and 1871 census?

My great great great grandmother Marion McInnes was widowed and living with her daughter Isabella Grant in Port Glasgow in 1861. The census gives her age then as 70, although she may have been a few years younger. Her maiden name was McCaffer and she was born in Islay, where she married Hector McInnes in 1822. There is no sign of her in the 1871 census.

Most of her family were living in and around Port Glasgow or Greenock at the time (although one of her sons may have lived in Govan for a time during the 1860s) so I would have expected the death to have occurred in Renfrewshire. I have tried every possible variant of her name I can think of but can't find her death at all. I've already spent a small fortune looking at records on Scotlandspeople. I've also looked for a second marriage just in case, but no luck there either.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Smith's Place, Govan 1868
« on: Saturday 22 September 18 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me anything about a street or building called Smith's Place in Govan? My great grandfather's birth certificate says he was born there on 28 December 1868. His sister was also born there two years previously. Other siblings were born in Port Glasgow or Greenock, which is where I understood the family had lived at that time - also, although he was born in Govan my great grandfather's birth was registered in Port Glasgow.

I can't find it on any old maps or street indexes so any information on where it was or what it was near to would be helpful.

Thanks in anticipation,

Monaghan / Arthur Murphy of Drumsnat
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My GGG Grandfather Arthur Murphy of Drumsnat married Margaret Sherry at Tydavnet Co Monaghan on 14 February 1836.

Their daughter Susan and son Francis were baptised on 18 July 1839 and 7 November 1841 respectively, also at Tydavnet. I have managed to trace records for both Susan and Francis after they moved to Glasgow.

What's puzzling me is that their father's name is sometimes given as Arthur and other times as Archibald on the Scottish records. Are the names, or the diminutives Archie or Artie interchangeable? Is there a Gaelic version?

Thanks for any insights,

Betty

Kent / Kent History Centre
« on: Monday 16 January 17 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
Please can someone advise me? Over the last 6 years I have developed quite a good family tree using mainly online resources, but I think I have now exhausted Findmypast and Familysearch. Most recently I have been using the text search facility in the Bishops Transcripts on Familysearch for parishes in SE Kent (although I can't see the images there are some leads I'd like to follow).

I am just not clear how good their coverage is and I am wondering whether there is anything to be gained by spending a few days in Maidstone looking at the originals. Do they still have records that aren't included in online sources?

I have a gap in my line between about 1755 and 1783 that is very frustrating!

Thanks in anticipation

Lanarkshire / Hielanman's umbrella - Argyle Street Railway Bridge in Glasgow
« on: Thursday 22 May 14 12:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello.

I wonder if anyone can help me confirm when the tradition of highlanders meeting under the railway bridge began? I've found a reference in a Glasgow history that says it was at its peak in the 1920s and 1930s but I'd really like to know whether it dates from the construction of the first railway bridge over Argyle Street in about 1879.

There is a family tradition that my great-great grandfather played the pibroch under the bridge. I now know that he was a ship's carpenter born in Islay about 1833. He was based in Port Glasgow or Greenock most of his working life when not at sea but came to Glasgow from Greenock in the late 1880s. He died in 1898 so his musical career in Glasgow definitely predates the bridge built between (I think) 1901-1905.

Thanks

Kent Lookup Requests / SUTTON-BY-DOVER christening look up
« on: Monday 02 December 13 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with the parish records for St Peter and Paul, Sutton-by-Dover, please? I am looking for the christening of Ann May born about 1780-1790. She married Joseph Dison Meecy (Macey) at St Leonard's, Deal in 1807 and in the 1851 census she was living in Walmer and gave her place of birth as Sutton.

Many thanks.

Kent / Godmersham marriages 1720
« on: Wednesday 30 October 13 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

From Familysearch I have a reference to a marriage between Robert Masse and Ann Hammond at Godmersham on 12 October 1720. Batch no IO4623-0 lists 4 other marriages that year in Godmersham.

However the parish registers for Godmersham on Findmypast (images 76 and 77) show no marriages at all in that year. There is an entry for 1720 and a blank space before moving into 1721, and there doesn't appear to be a page missing as you can see the ink seeping through on the following image.

Can anyone suggest where else I might look?

There is also a baptism record for John Mace, son of Robert and Ann, 14 May 1721 at Godmersham.

Thanks

Betty
