Sligo / Requesting help

I need help pinning down an exact location to begin looking for any possible records.  My family left Sligo for Middlesbrough during the late 1840’s/early 1850’s.  The only information passed down is that they were from “Sligo by the nuthouse”.  Given the time frame, I’m assuming they were referring to St. Columbas which would have been under construction when they left.   
Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
