Sligo / Scott and Clarke families of Skreen
« on: Saturday 20 August 22 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to sort out the relationships of some of the Clarkes of Ardnaglass. There are a couple of Clarke families that are not supposed to be related to my Clarke family of Carrownree but I thought I would try and sort them out.

I  particularly want to be sure I have the correct relationships for the Scotts who married  the Clarkes in the family of John Clarke of Soodry (in Griffiths Valuations of 1857) presumed son of James Clarke of Soodry (in 1833 Tithes)

I do  not have a record for the burial of this John Clarke at Skreen so think he may have died before 1877 as I only have access to the the records from 1877.

I believe John was the John Clarke of Ardnaglass who was listed as the father of the following people:

#1 Margaret Clarke aged 21 daughter of John, married John Scott of Drumnagool,  son of Patrick,  in 1855. So Margaret was born c1834

This couple were in Drumnagool in 1911 and are buried at Skreen.
Margaret Scott died 6 Dec 1919 aged 87 and her death was registered by her son William.
I cannot find John's death registration but the burial record shows he died  April 1922 aged 93.

#2 Thomas Clarke widower aged 34, son of John, married Catherine Scott aged 25 of Carrowdurneen, daughter of Robert in 1872. So Thomas Clarke was born c1837.

This couple were at Ardabrone in 1911 and are also buried at Skreen.
Thomas Clarke died 7 May 1924 aged 87
Catherine died 18 Apr 1932 aged 90.

#3 William Clarke son of John married Emma Siddons in 1872. William's age was not given and he left Ireland before 1901, though their children were born at Soodry and baptised in Skreen apart from the youngest child Emma who was born in Boston c1885. William seems to have died between 1885 and 1887 when his wife Emma remarried. But as I have not found that death, I do not know when approximately William was born.

#4 Mary Clarke of Ardnaglass aged 17, daughter of John married Robert Scott, widower of Doonalton son of Patrick, in 1856. So Mary was born c1839.

As it happens Robert was previously married to Mary Wallace, a niece of my 2x gt grandmother Mary Wallace of Easky. At the time of that marriage (1853) Robert gave his location as Mullaroe (Skreen).

So my main question is whether the Patrick Scott, father of Robert is the same Patrick Scott who was the father of John. Patrick Scott of Drumnagool died March 1882 aged 98. Death registered by grandson William Scott.

To complete the list of children of John I have:
#5 Sarah Clarke    b c 1845         m  1865   Edward Williams
#6 Susan Clarke   b c 1845         m 1867    John Martin

I would be also interested to know if the two Scott families of Skreen (of Carrowdurneen and Drumnagool) were related to each other.

I would be grateful if anybody can help with this tangle of Scotts and Clarkes.

Dunbartonshire / Thomas Bell and Maggie Gawn
« on: Tuesday 28 December 21 06:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am not at all familiar with researching in Scotland so would like some help please in filling out more details on the family of my gt grandmother's sister Maggie Gawn.

Maggie married Thomas Bell, son of James Bell at the 1st Antrim Church on 17 Jul 1900.
In 1901 Thomas and Maggie were at 21 Levenhaugh St, Dumbarton.
In 1911 Maggie and 4 children; Agnes Gawn Bell (9), James bell (7), Thomas Irwin Bell (5) and Norman Bell (2) were with her sister Annie Kennedy nee Gawn at Lisnevenagh, Co Antrim.

I do not have their dates of birth in Scotland. Nor can I find the family after 1911.

Maggie was listed as married in 1911 so Thomas was presumably alive, but I don't know where he was. Though it would make sense if he was looking for work in another country and had left his family behind until he was settled.

A grandson of Annie Kennedy has a photo of a William Bell who he said was his mother's cousin so William could have been born after 1911.

So if anyone has any knowledge of this family or how I can  trace them I would appreciate it. I do have a fairly close DNA match with surname Bell who does belong somewhere in my Gawn families and this Bell family is the most likely but not definite.

Cheers

Sligo / Unkles families
« on: Saturday 17 April 21 06:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have an interest in the Unkles families of Sligo, though I am only related by the marriage of my gt grandaunt Catherine Clarke who married Robert Unkles of Toberawnaun in 1878. As far as I know their only son John, though married in 1927, did not have any family.

Among my gt uncles photos are some taken in the late 1920s of Isabella Harte and family. Isabella married Thomas Harte in 1920 and was the daughter of Robert Unkles of Masreagh. Robert's 1879 marriage record (spouse Mary Shannon) shows his father was Young Unkles. Robert died 1917 but his wife Mary is I assume the "Mrs Uncles" in some of the photos. Also in the photos is a Molly Unkles who may have been a sister of Isabella. This is what I am trying to work out.

So I would like to know if anyone is researching this family, but I also would be interested in comparing notes with anyone researching any Unkles of Sligo.

Cheers

Linda

World War One / troop ship OMRAH
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 14:56 BST (UK)  »
I have been reading the service record of my gt Uncle who appears to have been in the NZ 28th Reinforcements which left NZ in July 1917. However his records show that he "transhipped" to the OMRAH at Capetown on the 28 Aug 1917.

The OMRAH does not appear on the list of troopships for the NZ reinforcements so I was wondering is she was used by Australia?

I have not yet found out anything that explains the "trans shipped" record but assume it may be due to having to stay in Capetown due to illness.

New Zealand Completed Requests / B Platoon A coy 5th reinforcements 1915
« on: Sunday 26 April 20 04:51 BST (UK)  »
I have a photo of the B Platoon but I do not  now if I had a family member in that group or if there was a family friend. The most likely would be one of the Baikie family of Tauranga.

I would like to find a list of the 5th reinforcements so I can check. I believe they left NZ June 2015.

Where do I find a list of B platoon online?

My grandfather Jack Graham was in the 33rds. Two other Baikie brothers (Peter and George) were on the Athenic. My grandfathers war diary mentions when he heard that the 3rd Baikie brother had died (also Jack?) .

A gt Uncle (Norgrove Alfred Brooks) that died at the Somme in 1916 enlisted Oct 1915 and was on the Tahiti which left 7 Apr 1916. However he was the oldest in this family so did not have an older brother.

His next oldest brother Harold was in the 29th reinforcements and I have some photos of him at Trentham.

Donegal / Colhouns of Donegal
« on: Saturday 16 February 19 10:18 GMT (UK)  »
I had an old Post on the Derry site relating to Andrew Colhoun of Bishops St Londonderry, born c 1823 who died 1881.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=525124.msg6677829#msg6677829

I will copy my latest information and questions across to this site as my questions relate to more to Donegal than Derry.

Antrim / Andrew Lyster Graham b1928
« on: Saturday 02 February 19 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have information on Andrew Lyster Graham born 1928 in Belfast; died 2000. Andrew's mother may have been a Robinson.

I am trying to find out if he was a nephew of my grandfather's cousin Alexander Lyster Graham (known as Lester) who was born 8 May 1899, son of William Lynn Graham and Issamenia Quigley.

I don't think Alexander Lyster Graham married so if Andrew Lyster Graham does belong in my family then he is probably the son of Lester's brother William.

Sligo / Jeremiah Wallace of Easky
« on: Wednesday 14 November 18 07:16 GMT (UK)  »

I have a suspicion that the name Jeremiah may be sometimes recorded as James, which is somewhat confusing, and I wondered if anyone else has seen this happen.

The latest incident I have come across is the marriage of Dorothy Beatrice Lindsay Wallace to Frederick Armitage in 1924 in Marylebone. The 1911 census clearly shows her father was the Reverend Jeremiah Wallace, born c 1862 in Dromore West, Sligo. Jeremiah  appears on a Clergy list in 1897 as an "Advocate of Kings College,London graduated 1896".

I am trying to find a place for Revd Jeremiah in my Ballymeeny Easky families. It is possible he is a grandson of Jeremiah Wallace born c 1798 who died 16 Mar 1853. I think this Jeremiah was the witness at the marriage of my 2x gt grandmother Mary Wallace at Easky in 1843 to John Livingston.

Jeremiah is said to have left a will in which he leaves a farm to his two daughters, Mary and Margery. Margery b c 1832 at Killeenduff married Robert Brett on 20 Jan 1853 and her father is recorded as James Wallace.

Then there is Charles Wallace, born c 1813 who married Amelia Brett at Kilmaglashan on 13 Dec 1849. One witness was James Livingston (probably the one who married Jeremiah's daughter Ann Jane Wallace on 18 Dec 1856).  Charles' father is recorded as James but it is my theory that Charles, Mary and Jeremiah were all children of Jeremiah Wallace of Ballymeeny who appears on the 1833 Tithes.

So if anyone can help turn these other two James Wallaces into Jeremiahs, then that would be very helpful.

Cheers

Antrim / Bryce Henry and Eliza Ewing of Dunsilly
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 23:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have another post on the Co Down forum on the Henry family of Shanrod Co Down with a question about a connected Holmes family.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=771865.0

The latest posts have returned to the family of my 3x gt grandparents Bryce Henry and Eliza Ewing of Dunsilly Antrim so I am reposting some of the information here. Mostly the information relates to the Ewing family of Coolsythe.

My Ewing family research started with the Will of Eliza Henry nee Ewing who died 14 April 1901. Later in 1999 I visited Ireland for the first time and copied this information from a tombstone in Drummaul burial ground.

Erected by Robert Ewing of Belfast in memory of his parents:
      John EWING    died 29 Aug 1852    aged 64   b 1788
      Mary EWING   died 1 Sep 1845   aged 47   b 1798
Also       William John EWING   died 2 Mar 1919
His wife   Sarah            died 11 Jan 1903   aged 71
Their dau   Maggie EWING      died 10 Nov 1903   aged 45
Son   John EWING         died in infancy
Sarah EWING      died 8 Dec 1909
Annie EWING      died 19 Jul 1915
Aggie EWING      died 28 Sep 1919
Mary EWING      died 23 Jan 1925

Eventually that lead to my construction of this family for John Ewing and his wife Molly McKelvy, the two named first on the above tombstone. Jane Ewing has an * as I have not yet found any evidence of her apart from on an Ancestry tree which has no further details. I have placed her in the earlier family on the assumption that she may have married pre 1845.

Eliza EWING      b 1820      m c1840   married Bryce HENRY      d 1901
Margaret (Peggy)   b 1821      m <1845   married Richard FAULKNER   d 1906
Jane EWING *                  married SHAW
Agnes (Nancy)      b 1826      m 1847   married William John McAULEY   d 1896
Mary EWING      b 1831      m 1851   married Robert AGNEW      d 1919
Sarah EWING       b 1832     m 1853   married Robert HUGHES      d 1898
William John EWING   b 1835      m 1854   married Sarah HILL         d 1919
James EWING      b 1838      m 1860   married Margaret RESIDE      d1915
Anna EWING      b 1843      m1866      married William CRAIG      d 1925
Robert EWING      b 1845      m 1869   married Annie Maxwell Campbell d 1920
