The Common Room / Rainbows badges and family history
« on: Sunday 08 January 23 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
My granddaughter started Rainbows (for those who haven’t heard of it, it is for girls aged 5-7 before they move on to Brownies) last September, one of the badges they can work for, is by drawing their family tree. As we were visiting over the Christmas period, I was enlisted to help. We did a simplified version using first names only but it gave my granddaughter a real insight into where everyone fitted in the family, especially since she calls her great grandparents GG together with their first name. Not quite sure how she thought they were related to her before doing the chart. The surprise on her face when she realised that GG ** was her grandad’s mum and her daddy’s grandma.

The Common Room / pdf or jpg
« on: Saturday 15 May 21 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Having had a couple of years not putting information into a family history programme, i have finally got round to sorting my records out. Most of them are jpgs but is it best to keep them as such or change to a pdf or even a tmp.
I don’t want to change them unnecessarily, but have had (in the past) them not opening, not sure why, but it was a windows pc whereas i’m using a mac now.
Any advice welcomed.

The Common Room / Data protection - new regulations
« on: Saturday 21 April 18 14:46 BST (UK)  »
I have in the past when signing up to anything refused to let them share my information to what they describe as "other companies in our group". I have refused to give my home phone number [ ex-directory] and personal email [i use an address where all commercial stuff is sent], mobile phone [only if I can't avoid it - usually I say I don't have one] and check from time to time that this is still the case.
So, now these new regulations are coming in, I find that I am getting letters "giving me the chance to update their records". And they make sure that I have to opportunity to opt in to receiving letters, emails, texts and phone calls from their partners.
Whinge over. >:( >:( >:(

I'm trying to download an image from Ancestry but having no luck. I click on save and a drop down says I can save to my computer but when I click on that nothing happens. Is this something anyone else has had a problem with?
I tried a different image just in case it was just that one but still no joy.

I am on a iMac using High Sierra, i would appreciate any advice, thanks.

Technical Help / Changed from windows pc to mac
« on: Thursday 14 July 16 19:02 BST (UK)  »
As windows 10 didn't appeal i took the plunge and bought a mac. So far i'm very pleased with it. There's just one thing i'm struggling with and i wondered if anyone will be able to help.
I used Access database on pc and would like to use something similar on mac. I don't mind entering data again, so compatibility isn't necessary. I have tried free downloads of tap forms (couldn't get it to the format i wanted) and have downloaded openoffice and libre office.. Openoffice looked as if it was going to be suitable but couldn't get it to work - it needed JRE which i also downloaded but then Openoffice said it couldn't find it installed. The same for libre office.
Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction.
I would like to be able to enter data in a spreadsheet type manner.
Thank you
Jo

The Lighter Side / Change of name on marriage
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 20:36 BST (UK)  »
We are going to a wedding soon and have had notification that the groom will be changing his name to the bride's surname. It got me to wondering what it actually entailed.  ??? ???
When i married (many years ago) i automatically took my husbands name. A marriage certificate was enough for any legal chnages.
I know you can call yourself anything you like as long as it's not to defraud, but just wondered if the groom would need to do anything else (deed poll for example) for passport etc.

It also got me to thinking that i wouldn't want to be doing their ancestry in years to come. ;D ;D ;D

By the way this will be the second wedding i've been to where this has happened.

World War One / Frank Masters 11066 Lincolnshire Reg
« on: Friday 17 October 14 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Francis Charles Masters born 1887 worked as a printer/compositor for all his working life as far as i knew. I couldn't understand when first starting to research why he was not in the forces during WW1 but as he married 1911 thought (rightly or wrongly) he'd somehow avoided joining up. I have just found a medal roll for Frank Masters 11066 for the lincolnshire regiment.
I would like other Rootschatters to give me their opinion as to how likely it is that this medal roll could be his.
I can't find any other Frank or Francis Masters living in Lincolnshire on the 1911 census.

Staffordshire / Samuel Gee
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 19:04 GMT (UK)  »
A relative of my OH has given me some information about her ancestors, to see if I can find any further information out. Before diving in i decided to verify the information she has given me.

Samuel Gee b about 1864 Leek married to Mary Ellen Sherratt in 1884 ( GRO 6b 428)
I have found them in 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses.
I have also found Samuel in the 1881 and 1871 censuses.
What i am struggling to find is Samuel's birth. All the censuses give his birth place as Leek and he seems to be fairly consistent with his age.
According to the information i've been given Samuel's parents were Robert Gee and Caroline Evans who married in Leek in 1848.
Can anyone manage to find his birth for me.
Thank you

The Lighter Side / Big ears
« on: Saturday 13 July 13 15:57 BST (UK)  »
While in the library this morning I was fascinated by the lady sat at one of the computers talking to a couple and guiding them through researching their family history.
There is assistance available for anyone wanting it, I'm not sure if there is a charge. I would hope not.
The name they were researching was a common one, they had a birth certificate and a marriage certificate, they knew what his occupation was and what did she show them.... she put his name in the search engine for one of the main genealogy websites available in the library and then said " you'll be able to get the quarter of his birth and year, but you'll have to send for the certificate using this reference" to which the answer was "we already know his date of birth, we have the certificate"
At this point she changed tactics  ;D ;D ;D ;D
