Westmeath / Daly of Kilcleagh
« on: Friday 12 April 24 19:29 BST (UK)  »
Does any Rootschatter have a tree for this family that you'd be prepared to share with me?
I don't need generations more recent than Joseph, who I think was High Sheriff of Westmeath in 1767 and married Frances Fetherston or Feterstonhaugh.

On second thoughts, it would be nice to know what daughters they had -- as well as earlier generations, of course.

Galway / Morgan of Kilcolgan and Monksfield
« on: Friday 15 March 24 10:46 GMT (UK)  »
John Morgan of Kilcolgan married Sarah Ormsby in April 1758.
He must have been descended from an earlier John who acquired Kilcolgan Castle in 1662.
Can anyone fill in the intermediate generations for me?

The family later moved to Monksfield but seems to have died out before the first edition of Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland was compiled.

US Lookup Requests / death of Emily Moore Chase née Kirkwood
« on: Thursday 21 December 23 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
Billion Graves shows a memorial in Oak Grove cemetery, Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts,
to Emily M. Chase 1873 - 1950.  Her husband (Harold) Weston Chase is also buried there.

I don't currently have access to Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland,
but according to my notes the Kirkwood entry gives her death in August 1947.
I'm used to discrepancies between sources of a day or a week, occasionally a month,
but three years is rather a lot.
Would some kind soul with access to US newspapers be prepared to see whether there was an announcement or report of the death in 1947 or 1950?

Dublin / Anna Hague -- COMPLETED, thanks!
« on: Tuesday 12 December 23 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
William Hague was an architect particularly well known for designing churches.
After his death in 1899 his widow Anne Frances (or Anna Frances, née Daly, born 1851) carried on the practice with a colleague, Thomas McNamara.

Update:
I've just been told that the Dictionary of Irish Architects has fairly recently added the information that she died in London on 17 Feb. 1934, as announced in the Irish Times a few days later.
No sign of burial or probate, but one can't win 'em all.

Down / where was Marguerite Terrace, Belfast?
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 09:20 GMT (UK)  »
A relative died in 1888 in Marguerite Terrace, Ballynafeigh, according to a newspaper announcement and the probate calendar.  That must be off the Ormeau or Ravenhill Road, but there's no Marguerite Terrace there now, and it doesn't occur in a list of street-name changes that I came across a while ago.

There's a Marguerite Park off the Upper Lisburn Road, but that is clearly not in Ballynafeigh (which I think is strictly Ballynafoy townland).

Can anyone enlighten me?

Ireland / where is Noone?
« on: Friday 01 December 23 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
I came across a newspaper announcement of the marriage (in 1837) of Vesey Daly and Sophia Newcomen at Noone.  I can't find a townland or parish of that name, but it was probably a Catholic church (even though the Newcomens were Protestant).

Sophie's father had a house in Monkstown but his main residence was in the parish of Taghmaconnell (Co. Roscommon) near Ballinasloe.  Daly was a solicitor in Dublin; I don't know where his family came from.  Can anyone help?

« on: Friday 17 November 23 18:56 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not sure she still lives there.
It's some years since she helped me with our Jones and Pickworth ancestors & relatives.

If anyone has an eMail address for her, please send me a personal message.

The Common Room / newspaper death notice 2017: can you help?
« on: Sunday 27 August 23 18:24 BST (UK)  »
Chris Morahan, film & theatre director, sometime head of BBC television plays, died in Guildford on 7 Apr. 2017.  Someone set up a FindaGrave memorial giving his place of burial as Lisburn cemetery (about ten miles from Belfast), but with no grave photo.  Lisburn city council has no record of his burial, either there or in the larger Blaris cemetery.  Nor can I see any reason why he would have been buried (or his ashes deposited) there: he was born in Wandsworth; both his parents were born and died in the London area; and his widow is English.  So it looks like a case of mistaken identity.

Would some kind soul with access to old newspapers be prepared to look and see whether there was a death announcement that said where the funeral was to take place, whether he was cremated, or gave other clues?  The public library here was unable to help.

Technical Help / Avast anti-virus
« on: Saturday 29 July 23 07:14 BST (UK)  »
I downloaded a version of Avast that supposedly still works with Windows XP.
The installation seemed to go OK, but no short cut appeared on the desktop screen.
Which of the many executable files in the Avast folder should I be running?
