Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with 1730 German Baptism
« on: Saturday 26 November 16 07:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootchatters,

I have a 1730 German baptism which I have tried to translate to see if it relates to my family, however there are a few words that I need help with.

The first image are the words that come after the father's name.
Going by past documents I think it may be the father's profession and religion.  I thought the first word may have been "Engloherr" (Englishman?) but this doesn't seem right as the surname is German - perhaps he was an English man from German decent? The next two words in brackets I cannot work out.

The second image is the mother's maiden name which I cannot read.  The first word in the brackets looks like it may be "Lutherian''. The third word is the same as the second word in the brackets in the first image.

The third image gives the name of the witness/godparent.  It looks like his first name is Peter but I can't work out his surname.  His profession is a soldier if that may help with the profession of the father.

Thanks for any help in advance.  :)

Australia / Waverley Cemetery Transcription Lookup Please
« on: Saturday 10 October 15 03:12 BST (UK)  »
I am after a headstone transcription for Louisa Vogt - died 7 August 1917 and buried at the Waverley Cemetery NSW.
A subscription family research site has the transcription but I do not have a subscription to this site and I am unable to get to the local library or genealogy society at the moment to look up the site or the CD available.
Her husband Otto Vogt is also buried there (recorded in newspaper article) however there does not seem to be a transcription for him. I do not know if Louisa and Otto share the same grave or if Otto's death is recorded on Louisa's headstone. Otto died 12 November 1935.

I have all relevant BDMs, newspaper reports etc so the transcriptions are all I am after in this post.

Thanking you in anticipation

Australia / Australian Military Forces Training pre 1917
« on: Sunday 10 May 15 11:21 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who was involved with having to be registered as "an alien resident" during WW1.  In a document produced in 1917, it reads:
"He states that he has had military training in the Australian Military Forces"

I have tried looking at records through the Australian Archives but cannot find anything that details people who have had military training but did not enlist.  As far as anybody knows this person did not serve in the military forces.

Were there 'civilian' training establishments run by the Military pre 1917. If so where would I find records?

This person was 70 yrs of age in 1917 and in his early 50s when the Boar War broke out so I am guessing his "military training" may have occurred because of the Boar War or even pre Boar War  ???
I am assuming the training took place in Victoria but there is a possibility it happened in South Australia.

Thanks for any help

Shetland / Lerwick lookup - Theophilus BROWN
« on: Tuesday 28 January 14 06:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a birth record for Theophilus Brown also possibly known as John Theophilus Brown.

He was in Australia by 1854 as I have his daughter's birth certificate which states he was 39 at the time of her birth, his name was John Theophilus Brown and he married in Port Adelaide in 1852 (I have not been able to find a marriage record).  It states he was born in Lerwick, Shetland Islands.

He died in 1875 (cannot find a death certificate), however his death was noted in a local newspaper and referred to him as Theophilus Brown.  I also have other correspondence which shows he signed his name as Theophilus Brown.  Notes from a local genealogical society (taken from hospital records and other sources) say he was 56 years and from Prussia.

Unfortunately this is the only information I have so I doubt I will be able to find his parents.

So - conflicting dates of birth (1815 / 1819) and conflicting places of birth (Lerwick / Prussia).  Thought my Mr Brown may have originated in Prussia then went to Lerwick but haven't been able to find anything with that lead and variations on Brown/Braun surname.

Cannot find when he arrived in Australia.

Have learnt by experience that not everything on early certificates is correct but I am passing on what information I have.

Thanking anyone for any information on an impossible task.   ???

Australia / Help with understanding Electoral Roll listing
« on: Tuesday 09 July 13 03:56 BST (UK)  »
I have found one of my ancestors listed in a 1898 newspaper under the heading of:

"Electoral District of Albert Park - Canterbury Division 1898.
List of names objected to upon the general list of Electors."

It then gives a list of names with identifying numbers and finishes with:

"The numbers are those of the Rights shown on the General List. Full particulars of persons objected to may be seen without fee at my office. (signed) Wm Bird Jacob (Electoral Registrar)"

My ancestor was on the 1903 and future Electoral Rolls.

Can anyone explain what this advertisement means?
Would these records be available to view?

Thanks for any help

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Eliza Maria Hill baptism Woodbridge
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 07:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism record for Eliza Maria Hill.  I have her death registration which states she died in 1899 (in Australia) at the age of 88 which places her birth year as 1811.  Her father was James Hill (veterinary surgeon) On her daughter's birth registration in 1854 she was 37 placing her year of birth as 1817.  On both registrations it states she was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk.  From both of these registrations she got married in Australia (maybe 1852 but no records can be found)

I cannot find her baptism for Woodbridge. Is there a baptism record for an Eliza Maria Hill baptised in the Woodbridge area?

From an online search I did find a Sarah Maria Hill born in Woodbridge baptised 6th August 1811 to James Hill and Martha Alexander and thought that perhaps she changed her name to Eliza Maria Hill when she came to Australia.

James Hill and Martha Alexander married 6th April 1811 and had the following children:
Sarah Maria Hill bap 6 August 1811 Woodbridge
Martha Anne Hill bap 2 June 1815 Woodbridge
James Hill bap 1 April 1818 Woodbridge
Alfred Hill bap 2 Dec 1827 Hacheston
David Hill bap 2 Dec 1827 Hacheston

James then married Sarah Mays 16th October 1826 in Pettistree.  They had a son Jesse bapt 14 Oct 1827 at Hacheston.

The above information was deducted from a census search finding a James Hill (farrier and also with the Royal Horse Artillery) married to a Sarah (beginning with the 1841 census) and although Sarah Maria and Martha Anne are not mentioned, the other boys are so I think I have a connection here.

However, there is still not a connection to Eliza Maria Hill.  I thought maybe Eliza assumed her father was veterinary surgeon although just a farrier.

Just recently I discovered an online family tree that mentions that prior to James Hill marrying Martha Alexander, he was married to Mary Smith - marriage date 28th March 1811 in Butley.  They had 2 children:
Catherine Hill born in Butley bap 8th August 1810 in Cretingham
Eliza Hill bap 30 May 1813 in Butley but born approx 1811.

Mary Smith apparently died in 1811 but there is no date given.

If this is so, maybe my Eliza Maria Hill did not know her real mother and was raised by her stepmother (Martha Alexander ?) in Woodbridge thus the Woodbridge connection.

Is it possible to find out if this Eliza Hill's father was a farrier so I can be a little more sure that this Eliza Hill belongs to this family tree and not just a possible name link?
And is it possible to find out when Mary Smith (Hill) died?

Thanking you

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Hickmans Parish Record lookup
« on: Friday 19 October 12 04:46 BST (UK)  »
I have the baptism record for Henry Hickman baptised 9th October 1796. (I also have a list of his siblings born between 1794 to 1808.)
On his baptism record it reads:
Hickman / Henry son of Thomas and Ann / Upper Gornal / Bricklayer.

The closest match I could come up with for his parent's marriage was for a Thomas Hickmans and Ann Hayden 26 Sep 1791 Sedgley,Stafford,England
(through research there has been an interchange between Hickman and Hickmans)

The Bishop's Transcripts for the Church of England Parish Church of Sedgley reads:
Thomas Hickmans bachelor & Ann Haydon spinster by Banns.

Are there parish records available that may give more indication of where they lived, occupation, witnesses etc so I can have a better idea if these are the parents of Henry?

I don't live in the UK so a look up would be appreciated.

Thanks

Europe / German translation of a word
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 10:26 BST (UK)  »
I have a german marriage document from 1794 and I am having trouble working it out.  Both father and son are stated as local citizens and usually a profession follows.

The word looks like   Tobacss spinner    but I cannot find a translation in a modern or genealogy german dictionary.

At first I though it may be tobacco spinner but  Tobacss is not tobacco.

Any help please?
