England / re. Searching through Petty Sessions...
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Does anyone have any experience of searching Petty Sessions records?

How difficult are Petty Sessions to search through on a year by year basis?

I'm considering searching the 1940s decade as I don't have an exact date.

Thanks,
C

Hello

I wonder if some kind person could look up a Hull Holy Trinity baptism sometime in the near future..?
Its for the year 1845 for an Elizabeth Smith, mother Harriet. I've researched her siblings and Elizabeth is child number 3 of 6.

Tried to order a birth certificate several times to no avail. Hoping for a baptism instead....

Hi

I've an unwanted certificate for an Army birth in South Africa.

The regiment is "2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders" who were at
Bloemfontein South Africa in 1908.  The father is Sgt 5378 Colin Campbell.

Bought by mistake. Please reply if this is your family!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Mortarboard but no gown!
« on: Thursday 05 April 12 15:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm trying to find out about the man in the photo below....

He is wearing a mortarboard and is in a group photo. The photo is clearly cut out from the centre of a postcard. There is also a handwritten note on the back which reads "Peterbro Sept 1910".  The date is accurate - I've already had several other photos from the same album dated 1902-1913 on the Photograph Restoration & Dating board. I don't think Peterborough was his home town - I think he probably came from Grimsby.

Therefore I wonder about this man - why is he dressed like this - a mortarboard but no gown?  (I estimate him to be 30-45 years old.)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to his occupation/profession? Can anyone help?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Which sister's which?
« on: Saturday 10 March 12 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'd be grateful for some help please re. dating comparisons...

I'm trying to establish which sister's which from amongst a set of 11 siblings.  I've researched their family histories but have only recently come across their photographs.

The photos come from a collection that range in size from 2cm by 2cm up to 4cm by 4cm - they were all housed in a miniature velvet covered album - it looked home-made.  Several photos have a 3 digit number at the very top.  All are completely blank on the back. Hardly any were labelled - however thanks to help from other descendants - and some reference books - several children are now identified.

I still can't put names to these 4 girls on the scan attached.  I think these remaining girls were born between 1863-1879.  I appreciate photo dating is not an exact science but would welcome comments from anyone here.

World War One / Service record death date?
« on: Sunday 19 February 12 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if anyone with access to WW1 Service records can help establish if this soldier died whilst still in the Army.....

Here's his details which I recorded when I had a subscription to view the records:

George Turner born Hull, fisherman, attested 14/10/1914 Hull to RGA regiment, Gunner, No. 47331
Apprenticeship with Letton Brothers Grimsby 1907-1912
4/10/1915  GSW in Rouen
12/7/1916  Bronchitis- admitted to hospital, Portsmouth, discharged 28/7/1916
15/1/1919  Harrowby Camp Grantham  (Address for pay given as 89 Orwell Street, Grimsby).
8/10/1919  1914-15 Star medal collected by Henry Turner from Staincliffe Instution Dewsbury.  (Henry worked in workhouses and was George's brother & next of kin - they were both orphans).

However I never located any death/missing date when I looked on the Army record - can anyone else do a check for me please?

Hello,

I'm looking for the marriage of George Thomas Stokes and Catherine Smith. They married in January 1868 in Grimsby Lincolnshire.  Their marriage is not on IGI (new or old), FreeREG or Lincstothepast.

I'm trying to find out what Catherine's father's name is - (or indeed any other details about this marriage) - and then I'll know if this is a sister to my x2 Gt Grandmother.

Can anyone help please?

Bedfordshire / Mystery Bedfordshire birth place!
« on: Wednesday 13 July 11 15:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello  -
I wonder if anyone who is familiar with the county of Bedfordshire can help?

On the 1851 Census I have ancestor William Barker (entered as Wm), at Little worth Drove, Deeping Fen Extraparochial,  Lincolnshire and his place of birth is down as "Bedfordshire,  Casen"  The handwriting is fairly clear but I can't find any place in Bedforshire called "Casen" or anything similar to this - any ideas?

The census image details are;
Class: HO107  Piece: 2095  Folio:774  Page:15  - that's from Ancestry - his age is transcribed as 36 yrs but it looks more like 26 yrs to me.  William has a disability, as do the other Ag Lab's who are living at the same address.

Any help interpreting this Bedfordshire birth place much appreciated!
