Armed Forces / Trying to find out Military Service Details
« on: Wednesday 07 December 11 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone!

Until yesterday I had never seen a picture of my great grandfather John George Oxley Jones (b. 12/07/1900 in Sunderland but later living in Horden, Co Durham) but when I saw that he was dressed in an army uniform it posed so many questions. I never knew he was a military man and have never found any record of it to date. Does anyone know what his collar badge and other symbols might signify and if they could possibly help shed some light on his history in the Military.

In a later, but less clear, photo his rank seems to have increased to sergeant.

Thanks

Jamie

Surrey / Help: CHILDS family mystery in Guildford
« on: Tuesday 14 June 11 17:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

I recently sent away for a birth certificate for my grandfather's father, about whose family he knew absolutely nothing. The man in question was an Edward Cyril Childs (b.1910)

The confusing part comes when looking at the birth certificate. It reads:

Registered in Plaistow, West Ham

When and where born: 18th Feb 1910, 26 Howards Road (I assume this is the same as the modern day street in East Ham)
No entries for the father (I'm assuming this points toward illegitimacy)

And here comes the confusing part:

Name, Surname and Maiden Name of Mother

Caroline Childs a Domestic Servant of 12 Quarry Street Guildford (Is this her work address or where she was born I'm not sure?)

Signature, Description and Residence of Informant

C. Childs, Mother, St Elizabeth's Home, Green Street, Upton Park (I can find no record of this place, is it a work house?)

Any help to try and unravel this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jamie

Family History Beginners Board / Jones: Help and Advice Needed
« on: Sunday 08 May 11 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone!

So I've been looking around trying to fill out my family tree and it finally came to the time to try and find my dad's paternal line. I am a Jones and I am sadly feeling the effects of having one of the most common surnames in the country.

So I have got as far back as my great grandfather (who thankfully has a rather traceable name!) John George Oxley Jones (b. 1900 in Sunderland). His father was a John Jones (b. abt 1863 in Howden), his mother was a Margaret Ann (possibly Laverick born about 1874) and he had two brothers, John William (b. 1892 in Hedley Hill) and Thomas Edward (b. 1894 in Burtonwood) as well as a sister Mary Alice (b. 1897).

I'd love any information that anyone could dig up or find out or just advice about tracing ancestors with common surnames in general.

Thanks

Aberdeenshire / Looking for Help and Deciphering
« on: Friday 29 April 11 22:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

So I recently found out that I've got some Scottish blood in me (Hooray!), and I'm trying to find out more. The chap in question is my G.G.G. Grandfather John Grant. He was born in Turiff, Aberdeenshire in about 1860 before moving down to London when he was about 20 to marry a Caroline Reeve. I have his birth record from scotlandspeople but I cannot for the life of me understand what it says. I also know that his parents were a John Grant and Isabella Murray and that their parents were a George Grant and Janet Shearer and a Thomas Murray and Jane Wiseman respectively.

I was wondering if anyone could help me decipher this script and maybe see if they can find something I might have missed that can help me some more.

Thanks  :)

Family History Beginners Board / An Interesting Problem
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone!

I've been researching my family history and have hit a rather interesting quirk in my data.

I was looking for my Great Grandfather Robert Murray Leather (b. 1906 in Co Durham) and in the 1911 census data I found his father Henry Leather who reported to be 38 years old and born in the Higher Booths, Lancashire which would put his estimated year of birth to be 1873.

When I went back to look at previous census data there was no-one born with that matching date and place. There was however, consistently throughout the other censuses, a Henry Leather born 4 years earlier in the same town.

The question I guess then is this: Is my G Grandfather just trying to make himself look younger or am I barking up the wrong tree? (No pun intended)  ;D

Thanks

Jamie
