World War One / Help identifying photo
« on: Friday 25 May 18 00:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, this is a photo of the hospital bed which my grandfather was in after being injured in WW1.
His name was William King born 26th October 1896 in Manchester, England. Reg No 2147.
He was part of 127th Brigade, 42nd (East Lancs) Division which landed on Helles, Gallipoli on 6th May 1915.
Grandfather was discharged, wounded, on 30th May 1916, well after the Gallipoli campaign ended. His Brigade went on to serve in Egypt, Suez Canal defence I think.

Can anyone identify this hospital ward? Which country it was in, and perhaps also the nationality of the nurses.
It's a long-shot, I know.  :) No harm in trying.

The Common Room / Finding the right childrens home.
« on: Monday 02 April 18 08:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
Can anyone suggest which might be a likely CATHOLIC Children's Home a 7 year old boy from Gorton, Manchester would be placed in after the death of his father in 1932ish? I imagine children would have been kept as close to home as possible?

Ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The Common Room / Emma Sills
« on: Monday 12 March 18 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I'm very much hoping someone can help me to locate the background history of EMMA SILLS, born on the South Island of New Zealand 13/7/1869.
She married a GEORGE BEVINGTON ROWE 1896 (although I've also heard 1899) in Rangiora, Canterbury, NZ.

Emma's father's name was ROBERT.

Word coming down through history is that Emma Sills was of Mexican/Spanish decent ( but there has also been a rumour of Greece).

It would be SO good if we could find out one way or another. Please help if you can. THANK YOU!!! A BIG ask, I know...gulp!

World War One / Service numbers
« on: Friday 09 March 18 03:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone. I've had no joy finding records of my grandfather's war service, however on photos he always wears the same badge. A relative messages me that it has the number 102146 on it. Is this a service number? I can't make out what the badge actually looks like or says. His name is William King though. Help.

The Common Room / Seeing for myself
« on: Saturday 10 February 18 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
I've now managed to form a good idea of how my ancestors lived, and where they lived, at the end of the 19th Century. I have loads of addresses which beckon to me to do a bit of a "nostalgia walk" around the streets of Beswick/Ancoats M/c

It's a very long way to come. Which begs the question " is there much of the original vista to see"? Or has the area been altered drastically with modern housing developments. I'm assuming the latter is more likely?
Is there anyone local who can tell me. Thanks.

World War One / William King
« on: Friday 09 February 18 03:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, my ancestor, William King (BORN 26th OCT, 1896, Beswick, /M/C, UK) was one of the British Home children emigrated out to Canada as a boy. He was still there in 1913 but was thinking about returning to England the following year, and I know he went to fight in WW1 but how do I find out whether he went with Canadian Forces or with the English?

Does anyone know how to sleuth this out?
Thanks  :)

and/or her 2nd family with John George Bibby with his son Albert Bibby, and their children together, Ada Bibby (born1910 in Ardwick) and Alice Bibby (born 1911 in Ardwick).

Family History Beginners Board / SS Virginian 1909
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 10:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone, my grandfather was one of Britain's thousands of youngsters from poorer families emigrated out to Canada in the early 20th Century. He travelled from England (Liverpool) on the SS
Virginian on the 2nd April 1909.

Does anyone know what this crossing was like? Weather conditions etc.
A tough ask I know....but no harm in asking. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. :)

Thanks

Lancashire / Finding Agnes King of Wythenshawe
« on: Monday 16 April 12 05:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody
It's been a while since I posted anything but I'm having such trouble finding the final resting place of Agnes King who died at Withington Hospital, Manchester, in 1959 (April I think) that I wondered if anyone can help me? I've checked Manchester City Council's burial lists with no joy so far, but I'm sure she must be there somewhere. Agnes was the wife of William King of Wythenshawe/Northenden. Agnes was 60 when she died I think. Here's hoping that someone out there can give me a clue. Very many thanks in advance.  :)
